Go Boating Dinghy Sailing
Whether you want to follow in the footsteps of Great Britain’s successful Olympic sailors, or just want to enjoy some more sedate sailing, there will be a style of dinghy to suit you.

Dinghies come in many shapes and sizes ranging from an Optimist (for 8 – 15 year olds) up to high performance planing skiffs, such as the 49er, for the speed freaks and adrenaline junkies!

No matter where you live you can learn to dinghy sail. Inland there are many lakes, reservoirs and gravel pits, whilst along the coast Britain boasts some of the best sailing grounds in the world.

Sum it up

It’s an exciting and easy way for you to begin sailing. Whether you’re sailing alone, or with your family, you can get out on the water and have fun. It’s one of the cheapest ways to get afloat and also one of the quickest and easiest ways to learn to sail.

Try it out

You can try dinghy sailing out by taking a taster day at one of the RYA Training Centres, sailing clubs throughout the UK and abroad.

What you'll need

When starting out you will require minimal kit as the RYA Training Centre that you choose will provide all the safety kit and clothing that you require. You should think about getting some sailing gloves which can be purchased from most chandlers for as little as £15.00 - and don’t forget your sun cream and sun glasses!

Get a qualification

The RYA’s Youth Sailing Scheme, for under 16’s, offers the Stage 1 (minimum age 8) which is perfect for beginners. It’s a two day course and will teach you all the basics that you will need to get afloat safely.

Please be aware that age restrictions apply for certain courses.
