Training is an essential element in sailing. To set sail with limited knowledge is both foolhardy and dangerous, to oneself and others. Experience is equally essential but that cannot be taught. It has to be gained. The only way to do this is to go sailing!
Not only is experience essential in the making of a proficient sailor, there are also the minimum mileage requirements of the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal & Yachtmaster Offshore Certificates of Competence.
These are 800 & 2,500 miles logged respectively.
Miramar Sailing offers a range of Mile & Experience Building Passages to help satisfy both requirements.
Passages are undertaken under the experienced supervision of one of our RYA Instructors. Every opportunity is given to get involved in every aspect of the passage including planning, provisioning, night sailing, watch keeping and skippering. Not only are valuable miles logged, but the experience of our Instructors is imparted willingly and enthusiastically, as they guide you through the passage. A bonus is the fantastic Caribbean sailing you will enjoy!
We offer both Non Tidal & Tidal Mile Building, however, due to the distance we need to sail to reach the Tidal waters south of St. Lucia, Tidal Mile Building is only available as Module 3 of our Yachtmaster Xpress Program.
There are 3 levels of passages.
An" intense" cruise is nonstop sailing between departure and destination with overnight watch and skippering duties.
A "leisurely" cruise provides opportunities for mooring/anchoring overnight; with a little more of a holiday feel.
A Non Stop 600 mile Ocean Passage. Here we attempt to cover the 600 miles of the famous RORC Caribbean 600 offshore race in 5 days. Ours are not racing yachts, but with favourable winds we should manage the average 120 nm necessary to complete the course! These will be Non Tidal miles but you will pass by most of the islands between Guadeloupe and Anguilla.
Which passage is sailed will be decided on a majority vote of the crew, following advise from the Instructor. Clearly, more miles will be logged on an intense cruise.
Our Weekly Non Tidal Passages could typically be:
Option 1: - The RORC "Caribbean 600" race course. An intense cruise. We are not racing but we attempt to cover the 600 miles of the course in our 5 days. The course takes you around the following islands: Antigua; Barbuda; Redonda; Nevis & St.Kitts; St. Eustatia; Saba; St. Barth's; St Martin; Guadeloupe; Les Saintes and Les Desirade before returning to Antigua.
Option 2: - The Leeward Island Cruise. A leisurely cruise revisiting some of the "Caribbean 600" islands but with opportunities to go ashore and sample local culture.
Option 3: - The Southern Cruise. An intense cruise to St. Lucia.
Option 4: - The Northern Cruise. Another leisurely cruise back to Antigua with some stopovers in the islands passed by on the Southern Cruise including St. Vincent; St. Lucia; Martinique; Dominica and Guadeloupe.
Option 5: - The Antigua Cruise. A leisurely cruise around Antigua, and our close neighbours.
All our weekly Mile & Experience Building Passages commence at 09.00 hours on Monday, and end at 09.00 hours on Saturday. On board accommodation is included from Monday night through Friday night.
Breakfast, lunch and supper catering is also included from lunch on Monday through to breakfast on Saturday. Meals ashore are not included.
Fuel, water and customs dues, where applicable, are also included.
Cost is US$975 per crew member,

"Miramar has been the most professional and had the best teaching if any course I have taken (2 others). I enjoyed it and learned a lot even though it was quite difficult with 2 passages over 60 miles (never done before). The experience I have gained is invaluable especially thanks to our Instructor David. He was patient, extremely knowledgeable and pleasant company. Brian & Pippa have also greatly facilitated a stay in a foreign country for us."
