Pentathlon GB - Schools Competitions

British Modern Biathlon Series 2014-15

There are a number of preliminary competitions held all over the country during the official qualifying window which is between 20th September and 1st December 2014. If you did the competition last year the format will be the same as in 2013-14.

The run and swim times achieved at these preliminary competitions will be put onto the rankings list for both the British Modern Biathlon Championships and the British Schools' Modern Biathlon Championships. As both Championships are organised with the same distances and point scoring system, athletes have the opportunity to qualify for two British Championships by entering just one preliminary competition.

The main differences between the two Championships are as follows:

The British Modern Biathlon Championships (29th & 30th November 2014 in Solihull) is a competition for all age groups (including athletes over the age of 19 and Masters). Athletes compete as ‘independent’ or for their affiliated school or club. Schools and clubs not already affiliated and who wish to have athletes represent them at the Championships should affiliate with us BEFORE entering the preliminary competition by completing and returning this form to our Head Office in Bath.
The British Schools' Modern Biathlon Championships (28th & 29th March - Olympic Park (London Aquatics Centre & South Lawn)) is a competition for all school age athletes and their teachers. All athletes automatically represent their school. We also welcome those who are home taught.

Choose a Competition

There is a window between 20th September and 20th October 2014 for athletes to qualify for the British Modern Biathlon Championships and between the 20th September and 1st December 2014 to qualify for the British Schools' Modern Biathlon Championships.

You’ll find all competitions listed on the calendar. You can enter more than one competition if you wish to get more competition experience or improve your times.

Competitions organised by the Pentathlon GB Regions have automatic qualifying places for both the British Modern Biathlon Championships and the British Schools' Modern Biathlon Championships. County Championships have automatic qualifying places for the British Schools’ Modern Biathlon Championships only.

Competitors entering any other Pentathlon GB approved competitions or time trials qualify by merit via their standing on the rankings list (there are no automatic qualifying places from these competitions).

Online entry process for entry to the Regional Qualifying Competitions and Pentathlon GB approved competitions

Once you’ve selected the competition or time trial that you would like to enter, what do you do next?

Representing a School or Club

Schools and Clubs who wish to have athletes represent them at the British Modern Biathlon Championships should affiliate with us BEFORE entering the preliminary competition by completing this form and returning it with payment to our Head Office in Bath. Once the form has been processed, you will be able to select the school or club from the drop down list during the online entries procedure.

Enter and Pay (individual entries and existing members of Pentathlon GB)

Entries and payments are all online again this year so it’s a simple process for you to follow. We will start to take entries from 1st September 2014.

First of all you need to log in to your account on the Pentathlon GB website. If you don’t already have an account but you are a member then click on the ‘Register Now’ link and follow the instructions.
Have the following details ready to complete your entry:
1. The school that you are representing
2. The competition you would like to enter
3. The number of entries you wish to make
4. First Name
5. Surname
6. Date of Birth
7. Gender
8. email address (of competitor)
9. Class
10. Pentathlon GB affiliated club (if you are a member of one)

We have not asked for submitted run and swim times this year as the vast majority of entries into the Preliminary competitions last year did not include them. This year, we will seed heats alphabetically by school and then surname.

When you submit the information we'll check to see if you're already in our database – you'll need to make sure you’ve entered your details correctly so we can find you. If you're in our database then we'll complete the application for you and if you're not we'll create a new membership number.

If you’ve chosen to enter a Pentathlon GB Regional Qualifier or a County Championships you will have to be a fully paid up member of Pentathlon GB. Our records will automatically check this when you enter, so don’t worry if you’re not sure when your membership expires. Junior membership is £10 and Senior membership £25 and will be automatically added to your entry. There is no membership fee for teachers.

If you enter any of the other competitions, you will need to be a First Steps member. This is free of charge and your membership will be automatically created for you. Should you qualify for either of the British Championships, you will need to become a fully paid up member at the time you make your entry to either of those competitions.

The next stage of the entry is to make your payment, this is done via our secure online payment system and the cost will be automatically calculated for you according to the competition and membership fees.

Entering on Behalf of Someone Else

If you are a teacher, coach or parent and want to enter your students or children then the process is almost exactly the same. You need to login to your account using the username and password that you set up previously, or register as a guest. If you have not registered before and are doing so on behalf of an athlete (or group of athletes), please use YOUR name and email address to create an online account. This is so that anyone wishing to enter more than one athlete only has to register once.

When you register, an activation link will be sent to the email address you provide.

Once you have clicked on this link, you will be taken to a login screen where you type in your username and password (case sensitive). This will take you to your own personal area where you can enter the athlete(s) by following the process set out above. Keep entering until you've added them all, we'll check for the membership details and then the payment mechanism will be the same.

Organising a Time Trial

If you would like to organise your own time trial (this will need to be between 20th September and 1st December) have a look at the checklist below to see if you're eligible.

Do you have:

Access to a 25m or 50m pool?
A track or flat area of grass that you can easily use for an 800m run?
The venue and enough time to accommodate at least 150 entrants?
Access to a hall for registration, a quiet area for results and changing rooms?
Reliable adult volunteers who can assist you?
A computer literate volunteer to use our competition results software?
Your own public liability insurance to run the competition?

If you can answer all of those points with a 'yes' and you are geographically situated in an area that where a competition would be of benefit, then you should be able to run your own time trial.

All competition dates need to be on the competitions calendar prior to the start of the autumn term so your next step is to speak to our Competition and Events Manager (Sue Hyde 07590 444374) before the summer break who will talk you through the process and ultimately approve your time trial – this will also involve completion of the Competition Providers Agreement which details the administration fees to run the competition.

Once it has been approved we'll help you as much as we can. We will add the time trial details to our competition calendar and you’ll receive a Competition Organiser's Pack which includes everything you’ll need to know to run a successful time trial.

We'll also provide you with our results software. We'll give you training to make sure you're happy with how it works.

All the entries for your time trial will be made online via our website and if you decide to charge an entry fee then we will handle this for you as well.

Qualification for the British Modern Biathlon Championships

The British Modern Biathlon Championships will be held at held at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre, Blossomfield Road, Solihull on 29th & 30th November. Under 10, Under 11 and Under 12 athletes will compete on Saturday. All other classes will compete on Sunday.

Competing here is a great opportunity to gain valuable competition experience and for school age athletes to improve run and swim times for the British Schools' Modern Biathlon Championships rankings list.

Ranking List

Results of all the preliminary competitions held between 20th September and 20th October 2014 will be combined to create a British Ranking List.

The rankings list will be published on the website on 24th October 2014. If you are successful in qualifying, you or the person who made the entry on your behalf will receive an e-mail inviting you to formally enter for the Championships.

If you have competed in more than one preliminary competition, the best combined score will be included on the rankings list. If you have scored the same points over two or more competitions, the score with the best swim time will be used.

Scores will be adjusted to that of a 25m pool (the length of pool at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre) for the ranking list as shown below.

If you qualify for the British Modern Biathlon Championships but are unable to compete, please do let us know – this means we may be able to invite another athlete from the rankings list to take part.

Qualification Criteria

The following number of athletes attending the Regional Biathlon Championships organised by the Pentathlon GB Regions will automatically qualify for the British Modern Biathlon Championships:

The top six scoring individuals (with competition scores of 2000 points and above) plus the three individual members of the first placed affiliated School/Club team (minimum 5000 points) in the U10, U11, U12 and U13 classes.
The top three scoring individuals (with competition scores of 2000 points and above) plus the three individual members of the first placed affiliated School/Club team (minimum 5000 points) in the U14, U15, U16, U17 and U19 classes
Other highly ranked individuals who have entered a competition organised before 20th October and have not qualified under the above criteria will be invited to participate. There isn’t a defined number of places for each class therefore additional invitees will be offered places on merit rather than their place on the rankings list.

Representing a School or Club

Teams

The top three scoring individuals from the same affiliated club or school in each class will create a team. This means that if the club has more than three qualifying individuals in a class, the best three scores will be taken on the day of the Championships.

Enter and Pay

All entries and payments will be online with the online system opening at 11:00 on 27/10/2014 and closing at midnight on 15/11/2014. You must formally enter and pay to compete at the Championships between these dates. The process is simple and all you need to do is login to your online account on the Pentathlon GB website and follow the instructions as before. PLEASE NOTE: THE ENTRY FEE IS DISCOUNTED TO £22 UNTIL MIDNIGHT 08/11/2014 AT WHICH TIME IT WILL INCREASE TO THE FULL COMPETITION FEE OF £25.

Qualification for the British Schools' Modern Biathlon Championships

The British Schools’ Modern Biathlon Championships will be held at Olympic Park (London Aquatics Centre & South Lawn) on 28th & 29th March 2015. Girls will compete on Saturday, Boys will compete on Sunday.

Rankings List

Results of all the preliminary competitions held between 20th September and 1st December 2014 will be combined to create a British Ranking List.

The rankings list will be published on the website on 15th December 2014. If you are successful in qualifying, you or the person who made the entry on your behalf will receive an e-mail inviting you to formally enter for the Championships.

If you competed in more than one preliminary competition, the best combined run/swim score will be included on the rankings list. If you score the same points in two or more competitions the score with the best swim time will be used for ranking purposes.

Scores will be adjusted to that of a 50m pool (the length of pool at the Championships venue) for the ranking list as shown below.

The top scoring individual (with competition scores of 2000 points and above) in the U14, U15, U16, U17 and U19 classes.

The remaining places for the final will be allocated from the ranking list to make up the total number of athletes in each class to a maximum of:

140 athletes in the U10 and U13 classes
160 athletes in the U11 and U12 classes
100 athletes in the U14 class
70 athletes in the U15 class
30 athletes in the U16, U17 and U19 classes
10 Teachers

Teams

Teams are not pre-defined. The top three scoring individuals from the same school in each class will create a team. This means that if the school has more than three individuals in a class, the best three scores will be taken on the day of the Championships. A school may have more than one team in a class.

Enter and Pay

All entries must be made online with the online system opening on 7th January 2015 and closing at midnight on 23rd February 2015. You must formally enter and pay to compete at the Championships between these dates. The process is simple and all you need to do is login to your online account on the Pentathlon GB website and follow the instructions as before.

Cancellation

If a competition has to be cancelled by Pentathlon GB for any reason, notification will be posted on this website as soon as the decision has been made.

If a qualifying competition organised by the Pentathlon GB Regions is cancelled for whatever reason, all entered competitors will have their submitted run and swim times added to the rankings list for the British Championships.

If a competition organised by Pentathlon GB or it's regions is cancelled for reasons within our control, each athlete entered into that competition will be offered an alternative competition (where possible) and in default a full refund.

If the decision to cancel is made because of circumstances beyond the control of Pentathlon GB, e.g. adverse weather conditions or the strong possibility of adverse weather conditions, there will be no refund.

Competitors entering time trials or competitions organised by third parties should check the cancellation policy with the competition organiser.

If you are concerned about cancellation, we suggest that you consider insurance against loss in the event of cancellation.
