First aid instructors

The first aid course is one of the RYA's specialist one-day courses. In order to teach it you must qualify as an RYA first aid instructor.

Applicants for instructor training must hold the HSE First Aid at Work certificate, or an equivalent, as a minimum first aid qualification. Doctors, Nurses (UKCC parts 1, 2, 7 or 12) with recent appropriate acute experience and paramedics are exempt from the need for a first aid certificate, but attending an RYA first Aid Course before coming on the instructors course is highly recommended. Once retired and no longer practising a full first aid certificate will be required after 3 years. In addition all applicants must hold a VHF or SRC certificate and are normally expected to be an RYA instructor in another field. Special cases may be considered.

The RYA sea survival course is highly recommended for all potential first aid instructors.

Instructors must be able to appreciate the restrictions of first aid in the marine environment and recent, relevant boating experience is essential.

The RYA has a first aid adviser who organises instructor training and helps with any queries you may have. You can contact her here.
