Automate filing of Sail Plan via Smartphone
- Provides boaters who don’t usually register SPs or use AIS on board with a more
accessible means of keeping the Coast Guard informed of their voyage plans.
The solution is the first of its kind, providing a means for boaters to file a Sail Plan (SP) with the Coast Guard from a Smartphone. With a set of server side processes, the solution monitors the journey, alerts designated contacts should a journey exceed an ETA and provides a web-based user interface for the Coast Guard to rapidly assist in locating an overdue vessel. DeCare Systems Ireland (DSI) announce the official launch of the Salvamento Marítimo SafeTrx app for the Spanish Maritime Safety Agency.
Cork, Ireland - July 22nd 2014 - SafeTrx continues it’s expansion in Europe with the launch of Salvamento Marítimo SafeTrx, the official app of the Spanish Maritime Safety Agency that allows leisure craft owners to log their Sail Plans directly from their Smartphone.
Available on Android and iPhone devices, Salvamento Marítimo SafeTrx features the latest SafeTrx features and allows boaters to file their journey details and estimated time of arrival (ETA). Their designated emergency contacts are automatically notified if the ETA is exceeded and can raise the alarm with Salvamento Marítimo. Using the location data sent by the SafeTrx app during a voyage, Salvamento Marítimo can quickly pinpoint lost and stricken boats. The agency 's adoption allows the boating community to take advantage of the service in Spanish territorial waters for free.
The SafeTrx system is quickly becoming the defacto standard for the electronic filing and monitoring of Sail Plans, and continues to expand its feature set as its community grows. This latest version of SafeTrx includes ‘Geofenced Overdue Alerts’ providing Rescue Coordination Centres (RCC) with specific alerts, vital when you consider the sea area that Salvamento Maritimo cover. The SafeTrx platform now provides mulitlingual capabilities offering the mobile applications and Boater website in both English and Spanish for Salvamento Marítimo.
Director of Salvamento Marítimo, Juan Luis Pedrosa, commented “Around 50% of the incidents managed by the Spanish Maritime Safety Agency are related to leisure activities. Salvamento Marítimo SafeTrx can locate, track and monitor vessels in distress which are not required to have neither GMDSS equipment nor VTS systems, providing a new approach to deal with this kind of incidents. We are sure this application can play a significant role in improving safety in coastal waters.”
John Murphy, General Manager of DSI, added “We’re very proud to be working with the national body for maritime safety in Spain. Salvamento Marítimo joins the growing SafeTrx communities in Ireland, the UK and Australia, and will seek to use the system to help promote safe, responsible recreational boating in Spanish waters.” The launch follows the recent release of the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) SafeTrx application which reached almost 1,000 downloads after its first week in the stores.
Salvamento Marítimo SafeTrx is available to download from the Spanish Apple App Store and the Spanish Google Play Store:.

SafeTrx is pleased to announce Salvamento Marítimo, the Spanish Maritime Safety Agency, will launch the revolutionary Smartphone application in Spain this July. Available in Spanish and English on both Android and Apple iOS devices, the Salvamento Marítimo SafeTrx app allows boat and leisure craft owners to log their Sail Plans directly from their Smartphone. Should the boater fail to return on time their emergency contacts will be automatically alerted via SMS and advised to initiate the appropriate action. Voyage position reports are displayed on the SafeTrx Monitoring Console so where an emergency contact calls Salvamento Marítimo concerning an overdue trip, they will have access to the boater’s location and SafeTrx trip data through a secure SafeTrx server.
The SafeTrx team worked closely with Salvamento Marítimo to establish the standard operating procedures and customised SafeTrx in accordance with the Agency's existing protocols. The software will be both deployed and hosted in the Agency’s headquarters in Madrid. Salvamento Marítimo is the national body for maritime safety under the Ministry of Public Works, with a team of more than 1,500 staff and 20 rescue coordination centres.

Official app of the Royal Yachting Association - The RYA SafeTrx App allows you to register your vessel and plan your journey on your Smartphone.
Please note: RYA Members can run unlimited trips for FREE. Non-members will need to purchase SafeTrx trip credit to commence a trip. SafeTrx trips can be purchased within the App for as low as £0.13 per trip.
Registering vessel and journey information couldn’t be any easier. Follow an easy to understand registration process to register your contact and vessel details within the application. Once your contact details and emergency contact information is saved, you may begin planning your journey. Using built in maps, select a starting point, an optional waypoint and an end destination. Add to this an ETA, the type of trip and the number of persons on board your vessel. Once this is completed simply press the ‘set sail’ button when you are ready to start your journey.
Pressing ‘set sail’ will register the journey details with the Royal Yachting Association computer server and will activate position reporting in the App. At regular intervals the App will send a position report to the server and your emergency contacts will be automatically alerted 30 minutes after the journey exceeds the ETA.
At any stage during the journey you can end your trip, revise the ETA, number of people on board or the destination.
As an RYA Member, you have access to a number of extra features within RYA SafeTrx:
"We are delighted to announce that South Africa's National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) will commence trialling the SafeTrx software in the next few weeks. SafeTrx is an accessible tool that leisure craft users can use when going to sea. It does not replace GMDSS, EPIRB or PLBs, it complements them.
DeCare Systems Ireland licenses the Coast Guard to operate a unique instance of the SafeTrx system. Each SafeTrx system component (Smartphone apps, SafeTrx Web, SafeTrx Monitoring Console) can be tailored to the Coast Guard’s specific needs. Hardware and software requirements for the SafeTrx system are available on request.
This information is stored on a secure server and access is restricted to the boater and the Coast Guard.
The SafeTrx Smartphone application uses both the GPS and cell network to determine location. If the cell signal is lost the app will attempt to continue to acquire and store location information using the Smartphone’s GPS receiver. Once a cell signal becomes available again the app sends the backlog of stored location information to the SafeTrx server and resumes transmitting location information in real time.
Boaters can view and edit their account details using SafeTrx Web. Within this website, boaters can:
From a monitoring perspective, SafeTrx is fully autonomous once the boater hits “Set Sail”, however failure to close a SP triggers an escalation process involving the boater’s emergency contacts and the Coast Guard. The SafeTrx escalation actions are customised to follow the processes and procedures of the Coast Guard. The following is a sample of the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard escalation process:
The SafeTrx app uses a number of methods to determine position and these do consume battery power. However the app monitors the Smartphone’s battery in real time and adapts to declining battery levels. If the battery level falls below 30%, the location transmission interval is adjusted from 1Km to 2Km to save battery power. There is also a failsafe to ensure that if the battery level falls to 10%*, SafeTrx suspends in order to preserve battery power for emergency calls. When the Smartphone is plugged in to recharge, trip monitoring is automatically resumed.
*Please note that the battery levels reported on some Smartphones are rounded down to the nearest 5%, therefore trip recording may be suspended when the battery level is between 10%-15%
When a trip is in progress, boaters can amend the following using the 'Review' button on the Trip Progress screen:
Background App Refresh was a new setting implemented in iOS 7. It allows you to choose which apps can run in the background and aims to help preserve battery life. This setting could cause a problem where the app loses a GPS connection and stops recording location data. It is required to be ‘ON’ for SafeTrx so that it can continue to collect GPS data while running in the background.
To switch it on, go to Settings> General and check "Background App Refresh" - this should be set to 'ON' and not disabled.
