Wacky Day for 49er Boys Stevie & Ben

Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes admitted they were disappointed after a day of “Wacky Races” at day six of the Olympic Sailing Regatta at Weymouth and Portland today (Friday 3 August).

The pair started the day in silver medal position overall after a sensational day yesterday when they picked up two race wins. But scores of 17th, fourth and 20th from their three races today saw them slip out of the medal spots heading into tomorrow’s rest day.

The 49ers have five more races still to come – four series races and a double points’ medal race for the top 10 boats. But although admitting they didn’t have the best of days today there is still plenty to play for when racing resumes on Sunday.

Morrison said: “It was disappointing today, the good thing is there is still a couple more days and we’ve seen how up and down things are. Everything fine with the equipment it was just a really, really short course with very gusty winds, like Wacky Races really.

“The wind was hard to predict, and if you didn’t predict it right, there weren’t really any opportunities to catch back up. We didn’t start as well as we would have liked and paid a pretty heavy penalty. It’s not all over yet, but we could do with a slightly better performance than today.”

Rhodes added: “We were obviously feeling pretty down after today, but we’ve got a day off, a day to re-gather thoughts, and it’s far from over. We’re just not feeling over the moon at the moment.”

The 49ers are scheduled to resume at 12pm on Sunday (5 August) on the Weymouth Bay West course.

The Olympic Sailing Regatta runs from Sunday 29 July – Saturday 11 August. The 49er medal race is scheduled for Wednesday 8 August (1pm).
