New motor cruising courses

The first is the Start Motor Cruising Course – an entry level course which can be run in conjunction with a Helmsman or Day Skipper course, and would be great for families who would all benefit from being trained and involved to various levels.

The second is the Advanced Pilotage Course – a higher level course designed to take people beyond Day Skipper training and prepare them for more advanced cruising by day and night. We hope this course will provide a valuable alternative for those who consider the Coastal Skipper course too advanced for what they require, or a great stepping stone to progress to Coastal Skipper.

Your existing recognition and instructor qualifications will automatically cover you for running the courses, and there is no additional investment required.

Start Motor Cruising can be taught by Cruising Instructors and Yachtmaster™ Instructors, while Advanced Pilotage can only be taught by Yachtmaster™ Instructors.

If you want to offer either or both courses, please email michelle.weston@rya.org.uk with your centre name and which course(s) you wish to offer. We can then add that course to your recognition, which will enable you to order certificates and will allow potential students to see that you are offering it via our web search.

A small number of students have tried the Advanced Pilotage Course already and we have received the following comments:

From students:

“This course would fit well between Day Skipper and Yachtmaster Coastal, providing valuable additional skills while building up miles/hours.”

“I recently took a Yachtmaster conversion exam and the pilot course just before was very useful.”

From instructors:

“All the students felt there was a place for this course in the scheme, especially for those not wanting to go all the way to Yachtmaster.”

As this is only a two-day course “close vetting of prior experience is essential.”
