World Team
On behalf of everyone in the UK Cadet Class,we say Good Luck to all the sailors heading out to Hobart, Tasmania to compete in the World Championships that start on 27^th December.

Poole Squad Training
The 2^nd multi squad training weekend took place at Poole Yacht Club in late November. Undeterred by a weather forecast promising incessant rain and gales, over 40 boats with 80 keen sailors from 4 squads arrived, eager to practice and improve their sailing.
Whilst the wind was in excess of a squally 20 knots all weekend, the major storm of 40 knot winds blew through on Saturday night much to the relief of the sailors. Thanks to the rib support and organisation, everyone had the opportunity to get out on the water, test themselves and show that Cadets can be sailed inthese tough conditions.
The squad weekends are also proving a very popular social gathering amongst sailors and parents alike.

Please keep providing any feedback that you have on the weekends or venues to the committee so that we can continue to move forward and improve the training support the class provides.

There is now a break for Christmas with the next squad weekend on 26/27th January at Oxford Sailing Club.

Sail Measurers
The Class is looking to increase the number of sail measurersand thereby reduce the burden on a small group of measurers. Ideallyall Cadet Squadrons should have 1 or 2 adults approved to measure sails.
At Oxford Sailing Club on 26/27^th January, we plan to set up a Sail measurer training session and train up a group of volunteers, no previous experience required!Could anyone willing to support and take part please contact Chris Green.
Remember, all new sails have to be measured before they can be used for racing so the more sail measurers we have the better it is for everyone to get this task done.

Membership
A reminder that Cadet Class membership subscriptions are due on January 1^st 2013. Details will be sent out by Chris Green and details will be put on the website.

JDS and IDS Squad Racing Event
Next year we will be running a special end of squad training race event specifically for the Junior and Intermediate squads to give the sailors the opportunity to race and compete against their peers. This is being run instead of the Cadet class taking part in the RYA Eric Twiname Championships. Plans are still in the making andfurther details will be provided in January.

Next Season Events
The plans for next season are forming well with some great events planned. Please keep a watch on the events section of the website.

I’d like to wish everyone in the Cadet Class a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and I look forward to a great 2013.

Reminder - Event Change
A separate note has been already sent out but a reminder that the Clemenson Nautilus Trophy Event 2013 will now take place on 4th/5th May at Parkstone Yacht Club. This is a change to the provisional venue previously listed.
 
Winter Squads
Well done to all sailors who took part in the squad selection events. The standard of sailing and competition was very high and it was great to see the strength of enthusiasm in the Cadet fleet. The first multi-squad weekend has now taken place and I’d like to thank Steve Jones and Chris Green for all their hard work to make this new format a success. Many thanks to all those who brought RIBs as without your continued support the multi-camp training would not be possible. Please provide any feedback to the committee by sending an email to Chris Green so that we can make the training weekends as effective as possible.
 
Open Training
We are trying to set up some Open Training at future squad weekends. This is intended to be for helms with some race experience and is not for beginners. If you are interested in this please could you register your interest with Chris Green by Friday 9th November. We will then look at the various options for implementing this.
 
New Helm Training
Some regional new helm training weekends are also being planned. More information will be sent out as the details become firm.
 
Optimist End of Season Event
We took two boats to this event in October to showcase the Cadet class and offer Oppie sailors a taster. There was lots of interest and we are hopeful that some sailors will join us in the future. Many thanks to Rachael and Rhiannon Williams for their great support on the day and delicious cupcakes!

Parkstone Open 8th/9th September 2012 - Day 2 Report by David Elliott

Poole Harbour can be a tricky venue for sailors. With surrounding hills and small islands acting as a funnel for the wind, double high tides, channels and shallows, experience and knowledge gained through practice pays dividends. So proved the case this weekend for Parkstone sailors Matt Currell and Theo Smith sailing 8997 Executrix. Counting five victories from six races, with their discard a second place in Race 4, they almost achieved perfection, although to suggest it was easy would be very, very wrong.
 
Teams arrived for the second day of the Parkstone Cadet Open to find bright sunshine and the expectation that wind speeds would build as the day progressed. Three races were scheduled with a discard kicking in with the first of the day, Race 4. The fleet launched on time and were in position for a prompt start at 1030. The course was laid in the waters between Brownsea Island and Poole Quay giving spectators a good view of the racing. During the passage from the clubhouse to the course, the wind had backed through almost 135 degrees from a westerly to a south-easterly and as the race progressed, the wind speed fell from F3 to F1. The course was shortened and Daisy & Angus Collingridge from Waldringfield in 9877 No Regrets drifted across the line to take victory in Race 4, followed shortly afterwards by Matt & Theo. The concern onshore was the possibility of the rest of the fleet being timed out, but with the wind swinging around to a westerly, spinnakers were hoisted and Alex Philpott & Harry Fitzsimmons from Frensham Pond took third in 9390 Bladerunner, followed by Henry Marsh & Freddie Collings from Royal Lymington in 9240 Nitro and the rest of the fleet close behind.
 
With the wind now a consistent F4 south-westerley, the Committee Boat headed off to the “Top-triangle” and a new course was laid. Following a General Recall, Race 5 started with a Black Flag.  Matt & Theo led at the windward, followed by Alex & Harry and Jack & Laura Hardie from Frensham Pond in 8513 Di Maggio. The order remained unchanged throughout the race, with Daisy & Angus finishing fourth, South Cerney’s Aliya & Aqil Jannaty in 9319 fifth and Alistair Wallace & Harry Folkard, also from South Cerney sixth in 7231 Sullom Voe.
 
With the wind building to a F5, Race 6 started promptly with Jack & Laura opening up a good lead on the first beat. Alex & Harry were next around the windward followed by Matt & Theo, Daisy & Angus, Aliya & Aqil and in sixth place, Alex Colquitt & Ella Marston from West Kirby in 9084 Speedbird II. An untimely gust at the Gybe mark saw four of the top ten boats capsize, which gave the leading five a good margin over the rest of the fleet. Matt & Theo kept up the pressure on Jack & Laura, taking the lead by the second leeward mark and winning their fifth race of the regatta. Jack & Laura were second, followed home by Alex & Harry, Daisy & Angus, Aliya & Aqil and Henry & Freddie in 9240 Nitro.
 
As winners of the Parkstone Trophy and on behalf of all the competitors, Matt & Theo thanked Duncan Glen, Cadet Squadron Captain and all those who had helped organise the event. Daisy & Angus were first U14 team and Daisy, first girl helm.

Parkstone Open 8th/9th September 2012 - Day 1 Report by David Elliott

Following long journeys to Carnac and Torquay, the option to enter the Mirror Europeans on his doorstep at Poole Yacht Club made a lot of sense for Parkstone’s Matt Currell. With Ben Shorrock as crew and with a dinghy borrowed from a schoolfriend, they were placed in the Gold Fleet. Twelve races were scheduled with two discards.

Out of a fleet of 43 entries, they finished in a very creditable 14^th place. Their best results were 4^th in Race 5 and three other top-ten finishes.

“We were made very welcome by the Mirror fleet and thoroughly enjoyed the week” commented Matt.” It was good to sail a different boat”.  “It felt a bit strange to pull up red sails” observed Ben, “but once afloat we got stuck into the racing”.

PS Yes, Benina Split is yellow on port and purple on starboard.

Ex-Cadets at the Zhik 29er Nationals by David Elliott

 

This year’s event was held at Restronguet S C amongst the beautiful scenery of the Fal estuary. With 64 entries, competitors initially raced in a Qualifying Series of 7 races, out of which Gold and Silver Fleets were determined. Eight ex-Cadets entered the Nationals; Joan and Jane Furness (Draycote Water), Chris Brewer (Parkstone), Molly Brown (Royal Burnham), Hannah and Ailsa Muskett (Royal Lymington), Abigail Croft (Queen Mary) and George Warrington (Thorpe Bay).Their number was increased when Katrina Brewer (Parkstone) stepped in as a replacement for Abi’s crew. The 29er is one of the two double-handed dinghy classes into which Cadet sailors wishing to progress along the RYA Pathway can move.

Joan Furness with her crew Abigail Page, Murray Hampshire, for whom Chris Brewer was crewing, Charlotte Hooper, for whom Molly Brown was crewing and Jane Furness, with her crew, Ellie Hide, all qualified for the Gold Fleet. Murray & Chris finished in 12^th place overall, counting five top-ten finishes from the 11 race series. Charlotte & Molly were 13^th, with their highlights victory in Race 6 and 2^nd in Race 7. In 16^th place were Joan & Abigail, with three top-ten finishes to their credit and in 31^st place, Jane & Ellie, who came good as the event progressed with a 10^th in Race 8.

Hannah & Ailsa, Abi, with her crew Jenny Cant and Alex Farrell, for whom George Warrington was crewing went through into the Silver Fleet.

Hannah & Ailsa recorded a 2^nd in Race 5 and finished 8^th overall. Alex & George started well, with an 8^th in Race 1 and a 7^th in Race 2, completing the event in 16^th place. Jenny Cant was unable to complete the series due to illness and Katrina Brewer replaced her as Abi’s crew midway through the series. Two victories and a second propelled them up to 23^rd place.

Cadets and ex-Cadets at the Curradinghy 420 Nationals by David Elliott

The attractions of Torquay proved too much for some, with sixteen Cadet and ex-Cadet sailors entering the 420 National Championships, which started on the Saturday immediately after our event. The 420 is one of the two double-handed dinghy classes into which Cadet sailors wishing to progress along the RYA Pathway progress. Fourteen races were scheduled, with two discards.

Joe Butterworth (Fishers Green) crewing for Callum Airlie (East Lothian), just missed out on a podium place, finishing in 4^th. The pairing were rarely out of the top ten throughout the regatta and their results included victory in Race 2 and three 3^rd places. Callum had the honour of being one of the seven athletes selected to light the Olympic cauldron at the Opening Ceremony. One place behind in 5^th was James Dodd (Itchenor), crewing for Hugo Sloper (Itchenor). Their best results were 2^nd place in Race 8 and 3^rd in Race 5. Top all-Cadet entry was Ben Hazeldine (Frensham Pond/Royal  Lymington) & Rhos Hawes (South Cerney/Royal Lymington), who are both aged 15. They finished 14^th overall with the highlight a 3^rd place in Race 1 and four other top-ten finishes.

Several Cadet sailors were competing in their first 420 event. Matthew Shorrock (Frensham Pond) & Will Davis (Royal Lymington) put together a very creditable string of results to finish in 26^th, with their best a result 9^th place in the final race of the event. They also recorded an 11^th and two 18^th places. Katie Kinver (Exe), helming for her more-experienced sister, Emily, started the event in brilliant fashion, finishing 6^th in Races 1 and 2. They finished 33^rd overall. Hattie Ayre (Stone) & Jose Gummer (Fishers Green) and Catriona Wallace & Sophie Goodrich (South Cerney) gained much experience from their first event, with their best results a 19^th and a 23^rd respectively in Race12.

Amongst the ex-Cadets, Will Kennedy (Fishers Green), crewed by Alex Curtis (Queen Mary), finished 23^rd, including 11^th place in Race 4.  John Page (Alton Water)  with late replacement Max Ingall, finished in 30^th, with their best result 19^th place in Race 7, while Caroline Croft (Tamesis), crewed by James Parker-Mowbray (Frampton-on-Severn) finished one place behind, with their best result a 9^th in Race 10.

The third day is traditionally a lay day as far as points races are concerned, but for those who want to sail competitively there is still plenty of opportunity in the shape of a trophy pursuit race, the crew’s race, the ex-Cadets race (single-handed) and the Old Gaffers race (where both helm and crew must have a combined age of over 75, with the helm being at least 45). 2012 Trident UK Cadet Nationals at Royal Torbay - Final Report by David Elliott

Nicholas Sutton & Joshua Bennett are the 2012 TridentUK Cadet Nationals Champions.  Sailing 8844 Nasty Tern, the Corinthian Otters pairing counted two victories, three seconds, one third and two fifths for a total of 21 points; having featured in the vanguard of every race. Ten points behind in second place were Matthew Shorrock & Ryan Wilkinson from Frensham Pond in 8352 Master Mariner with one victory and four other podium places to their credit, with Alex Corby & Robert Keen from Fishers Green/King George/Alton Water sailing 9000 White Stuff in third place with 34 points, including three second-places. Ben Shorrock & Beatrice Sexton from Frensham Pond sailing 8441 It Takes Two won the Silver Fleet, with Matthew & Katy Lloyd from Thorpe Bay runners-up in 9029 Freestyle. The Bronze Fleet was won by South Cerney’s Reece & Lewis Lane in 9382 Exe-celerator, with Lucy Corby & Jade McCarthy from Fishers Green/King George in 9152 Sci-Fi, second.

Going into the final day, Nick & Josh were all but assured of victory. The battle for second place was much closer, with both Alex & Robert and Matthew & Ryan in contention. A further discard kicked in with the second and final race of the day. Launching was delayed by an hour during which the wind speed dropped and Race 9 started in a southerly F3/4 and a moderate swell. Katie Kinver & Martha Jones from Exe/Royal Torbay in 8511 Cyclone led at the windward from South Cerney’s Aliya & Aqil Jannaty in 9319, with Seppe Greeve & Cedric Boven in BEL 8519 Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster third, Nick Sutton & Joshua Bennett  from Corinthian Otters in 8844 Nasty Tern, fourth. Frensham Pond’s Ben Shorrock & Beatrice Sexton in 8441 It Takes Two were fifth, with Will Davis & Harry Fitzsimmonds from Royal Lymington in 9034 Forty Two, sixth. With the wind dropping, Katie & Martha held on to their lead with Ben & Beatrice moving up into second and being joined by his elder brother, Matt and crew Ryan. On the final run, Matthew & Ryan picked up the pace but were unable to catch Katie & Martha, who took the gun. Ben & Beatrice finished in third.

Second place in Race 9 had moved Matthew & Ryan alongside Alex & Robert in the battle for the runners-up spot behind Nick & Josh, with the discard favouring the Frensham Pond pairing. Matthew & Ryan led at the first windward, with Ben & Beatrice second and Alex & Robert, third. A shift to the left saw the Windward mark relayed for the second beat, with Alex & Robert following Matthew & Ryan and Emma & Joshua White from Waldringfield third in 9876 Zest.  Another shift kept the Windward marklayer busy and in the final outcome, Matthew & Ryan took the gun from Alex & Robert with Ben & Beatrice third.

2012 Trident UK Cadet Nationals at Royal Torbay - Day 3 by David Elliott

Going into the final day, Nick Sutton & Josh Bennett sailing 8844 Nasty Tern have a sixteen point lead at the top of the table. In yesterday’s two races, the Corinthian Otters pairing recorded a first and a second; putting them in a commanding position with only two races left in the series. Alex Corby & Robert Keen from Fishers Green/King George/Alton Water in 9000 White Stuff tried hard to keep up the pressure, scoring a second and a fourth to sit in the runners-up position overnight, with Matthew Shorrock & Ryan Wilkinson from Frensham Pond in 8352 Master Mariner lying third. Waldringfield pairing Emma & Joshua White sailing 9876 Zest, had their best day of the event so far, with a 6^th in Race 7 and victory in Race 8.

Ben Shorrock & Beatrice Sexton from Frensham Pond in 8441 It Takes Two maintain their position at the head of the Silver Fleet, with Thorpe Bay’s Matthew & Katy Lloyd second in 9029.

The fleet have launched this morning and it is hoped to complete the series. A second discard kicks in with the tenth and final race.

2012 Trident UK Cadet Nationals at Royal Torbay - Day 2 by David Elliott

Lighter winds prevailed over Torbay for the second day of the 2012 TridentUK Cadet Nationals. The fleet launched into a southerly F2 which had backed through almost 90 degrees by the end of racing and successful reading of the shifts paid dividends. The first discard kicked in with the second of the day’s three races.

Race 4 was away at the first attempt. Annie Knott & Ellie Wootton from Waldringfield in 8432 Trident led at the windward from Fishers Green pairing Jamie Proffitt & Tom Collyer in 8846 No Fear, overnight leaders Nick Sutton & Joshua Bennett from Corinthian Otters in 8844 Nasty Tern, Matthew Shorrock & Ryan Wilkinson from Frensham Pond in 8352 Master Mariner, Matthew Currell & Theo Smith from Parkstone in 8997 Executrix and Waldringfield’s Sam Yale & Harry Chatterton in 9369. There was little change in the top boats until the third beat when a major wind shift propelled Belgium’s Seppe Greeve & Cedric Boven in 8519 Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster to the head of the fleet; a position which they held at the finish. Annie & Ellie were second, with Nick & Josh, third.

High level cloud signalled changing conditions as Race 5 got under away. Matthew & Theo led up the beat and rounded the windward in first place. Frensham Pond teams Jack Wilson & Jim Brooker in 735 Pintail and Jack Hardie & Archie Somers in 8513 Di Maggio were second and third respectively, with Seppe & Cedric fourth and Waldringfield’s Emma & Joshua White in 9876 Zest, fifth. With the cloud base dropping and the wind picking up, Jack & Archie took the lead on the final beat and led at the finish from Matthew & Ryan and Seppe & Cedric, with fourth place going to Hattie Ayre & Cally Terkelsen from Stone in 8420 Tantrum.

By the start of the sixth and final race of the day, the wind had an easterly feel to it. Away once again at the first attempt, Seppe & Cedric led up the beat and maintained their grip at the head of the fleet throughout the race. Fishers Green/King George/Alton Water pairing Alex Corby & Robert Keen in 9000 White Stuff finished in second place, with Frensham Pond’s Ben Shorrock & Beatrice Sexton in 8441 It Takes Two, third.

Seppe Greeve & Cedric Boven and Nick Sutton & Joshua Bennett both have 13 points at the end of the second day, with the Belgian team leading on countback. Matthew Shorrock & Ryan Wilkinson are third with 25 points, one point ahead of Alex Corby & Robert Keen. Leading the Silver Fleet are Ben Shorrock & Beatrice Sexton, with local team Esme & Eliza Jones in 8440 Black Otter in second. The Bronze Fleet is headed by Reece & Lewis Lane from South Cerney in 9382 Exe-celerator. Fishers Green/King George pairing Lucy Corby & Jade McCarthy sailing 9152 Sci-Fi are five points behind them in second.

Wednesday is a lay day. Four further races are scheduled, with another discard kicking in with the tenth race.

Sailing 8844 Nasty Tern, the Corinthian Otters pairing mastered the shifty conditions in Torbay to record a bullet and two seconds. Matthew Currell & Theo Smith from Parkstone in 8997 Executrix are second with 20 points, with Katie Kinver & Martha Jones from Exe/Royal Torbay third in 8511 Cyclone on the same score. Top Silver Fleet team are Ben Shorrock & Beatrice Sexton from Frensham Pond in 8441 It Takes Two and Reece & Lewis Lane from South Cerney head the Bronze Fleet in 9382 Exe-celerator.

Poor visibility and rain delayed the start of Race 1 for two hours. Nick & Josh led at the windward, followed by Frensham Pond pairing Jack Wilson & Jim Brooker in 735 Pintail. Matt & Katy Lloyd from Thorpe Bay in 9029 were third, followed by Fishers Green/King George/Alton Water pairing Alex Corby & Robert Keen in 9000 White Stuff and Hattie Ayre & Cally Terkelsen from Stone in 8420 Tantrum. Jack & Jim led at the second windward and took the gun on a shortened course. Nick & Josh were second, with Matthew & Theo, third.

Race 2 followed almost immediately. Nick & Josh again led at the end of the beat, with Katie & Martha second and Belgian competitors Seppe Greeve & Cedric Boven in 8519 Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster, third. Having advanced into third by the end of the next beat, Matt & Theo  kept up the pressure on the leading pair before leapfrogging them both to cross the line in first place.

Race 3 started after the course was relaid. Once again Nick & Josh led at the first windward. Matthew Shorrock & Ryan Wilkinson from Frensham Pond in 8352 Master Mariner led mid-race, but perseverance saw Nick & Josh recover their lead to round-off the day in the best possible way. 2012 Trident UK Cadet Nationals at Royal Torbay 12th - 17th August 2012 by David Elliott

Seventy Cadets heading to Torquay for this year's National and Open Championship will only make worse the traditional summer congestion on the roads of the west country! Entries from Alton Water, Castle Cove, Corinthian Otters, Exe, Fishers Green, Frensham Pond,  King George, Parkstone, Royal Lymington, Royal Torbay, South Cerney, Stone, Tamesis, Thorpe Bay, Waldringfield and West Kirby  will be joined by five Belgian crews. Ten races are scheduled, with teams divided into Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets. TridentUK.com have generously given a number of super prizes, including two top-of-the-range drysuits!

 
At the end of the event, the team to represent GBR at this year's World Championships in Hobart will be announced. Ten places are up for grabs. Two selector events comprising twelve races have already taken place and the coming week's results will decide who puts their Cadet into a container and hopes that it reaches Tasmania in time for Christmas! For other Cadet sailors, the results from the Nationals will be taken into account in determining the 2012/13 UKNCCA National and RYA National Junior squads.

Flanders International Regatta 2012 - Nieuwpoortweek.
Arriving in Flanders around 5 hours after leaving home felt great. It was good to be back... 
 

Over all it was an excellent event recommended to anyone looking to expand their sailing skills. It is also the venue for the Cadet Worlds in July 2013

Waldringfield Open 23rd/24th June
Fierce tides and strong south-westerlies. Despite a soggy lunchbox the event was a resounding success!!
 

Contributing to the Mailspeed Eastern Series, 33 teams from the East Coast gathered at Waldringfield on the River Deben on Saturday 23^rd  for the Club’s annual Open, sponsored by Zhik, Anglia Factors and Seamark Nunn.

At the end of day 1 and with no discards at this point, Alex Corby (FGSC) lay in first place with just 8 points, Josie Gummer (FGSC) in second with 11 points, Alex Warrington (TBYC) in third place with 15 and Sam Yale (WSC)in fourth with 18 points.

After a fantastic weekend of sailing, and some nail biting racing, Annie Knott emerged victorious to win the overall Harris salver with just 8 points.  Alex Corby was second, Sam Yale third, and Josie Gummer fourth.  Sam Yale was first under 15, Ed Harris and Faye Chatterton (WSC) first under 14 and Francesca Ingall and Eve Turnpenny (both FGSC) first under 13

Scalextrix at South Cerney – Where are my ear plugs?

How do you entertain over 50 Cadet sailors with racing abandoned for the day? Bring out the Scalextrix!

South Cerney’s clubhouse walls bounced to shouts and screams normally found at Silverstone. With six cars racing together on a two-lane track, the crashes were spectacular as their drivers forgot the normal courtesies of Port and Starboard. As day passed into night, so the cream rose to the top and in the final race, Reuben Tinto took the honours and the big box of chocolates from Catriona Wallace in second and Tima Malikov third.
 

South Cerney Open Meeting - 16th/17th June 2012 by David Elliott

Strong winds gusting to F7 limited racing on the first day of the Open Meeting. Alex Corby & Robert Keen from Fishers Green/King George/Alton Water in 9000 White Stuff took the gun in the day's only race. Second were Jack Hardie & Tom Bridge from Frensham Pond in 8513 Di Maggio, with Royal Lymington's Will Davis & Harry Fitzsimmons third in 9034 Forty Two.

Three races are scheduled for Sunday.

World Team Selector Event

CADETS RETURN TO THEIR SPIRITUAL HOME.
The weekend of 2^nd & 3^rd June saw the UKNCCA (United Kingdom National Cadet Class Association) returning to Burnham on Crouch after a long absence for the 2^nd of their world team Selection events.

Feverish preparation at the RCYC meant the club was well prepared for what ended up with a total entry of 69 boats arriving for the event.

All Zone Sailors are in the RYA Eric Twiname Championship this weekend

Scheduled to start at 11.25am on Saturday 12^th May, Rutland Sailing Club will welcome sailors from across the nation in the battle for the 2012 RYA Eric Twiname Championship crown. 

Now in its 26^th year and with 325 contenders in over 285 boats and windsurfers the highly charged weekend will offer the RYA Zone/Home Country Squads competitive racing in a fun and friendly environment.

On behalf of Squadron 66 at Parkstone YC, I would like to thank all who attended the Clemenson Nautilus Trophy Event held over the weekend 5^th/6^th May. The racing and fleet management were excellent and the shoreside support teams did a sterling job of launching, and retrieval, in double-quick time. It was great to see so many Cadets in Poole Harbour – a tremendous advert for the class and a credit to all involved.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you about our Open Meeting on 8th/9th September when you can do it all over again. The event is also a Selector for the Junior Development Squad. You will be pleased to learn that sailing will be over "neap tides" and sunshine has been booked for the occasion.

Great Turnout at Stone Training Day for New Sailors - 18 Cadets and gorgeous sunshine
 

The first Cadet training session of 2012 held on Saturday had 18 eager children arrived at the club keen to get sailing in the 2012 sailing season at Stone.
 
We had 7 helms aged between 10 and 13. Most of them had never helmed a Cadet and this was coupled with 2 experienced and 8 inexperienced crew. 2 cadets took part in the Laser 4.7 training with Frankie and Georgia. The remaining 16 took part in the Cadet dinghy sailing with Duncan.
 
The weather couldn’t have been kinder to us it was gorgeous sunshine with a steady force 2. Most of the children looked like they had been helming for years. It was a great start for our training at the club and hopefully these numbers at training will continue to rise through the season. With an early Cadet week this year in June (6-9^th) these children will be racing with the rest before we know it.

New and improved Cadet Training Scheme for 2012/13

In a nutshell all open training and Squad events will be held at the same place and time - each group on the same water on the same day with their respective coaches. This includes the replacement squad for the RYA Zone Squad and the continuing RYA National Junior Squad. This means-

RYA Volvo Dinghy Show                                                    

The Cadet Class had a larger than usual presence at this year's dinghy show. With the Jack Holt Centenary display the Cadet played an important role. We had the recently built "Zest" on the main stand showing off the class along with DVD's of the training and boat archives where past Cadet sailors could look up their old boat. On the RYA Volvo youth stand we had "Hammer Head" as a superb example of the fibre glass boats and finaly in pride of place in the Jack Holt line up was the oldest registered Cadet still on the circuit - "Pintail".

I would like to thank Tim Gummer for all his hard work in organising such a great display. The White, Wilson and Hayward families for donating their boats for us to display. Finaly thanks to all those who gave up their precious time to come and help out on the stands especially Matt White and David Elliott. It was also great to see many of the Cadet Sailors showing off their boats and handing out lollies and leaflets!
