We are the Information Commissioner’s Office. We uphold information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies and data privacy for individuals.
An independent public body, we don’t just enforce the Data Protection and Freedom of Information Acts. We educate organisations, advise the public, promote good practice, investigate complaints, shape policy, commission research and enforce the law where necessary.
Our work has never been more in the public eye and is extremely varied, always interesting and more important than ever. It ranges from our helpline team answering simple public enquiries to our Commissioner working with Parliament to influence future legislation.
We provide guidance to individuals about their right to know what information is held about them. We also educate organisations and oversee the laws and rules that ensure your data is not only managed fairly, but is kept securely, accurately and up-to-date.
We regulate legislation, promote good practice and advise on your right to obtain information held by public bodies, unless there are good reasons to keep it confidential. The Act aims to promote a culture of openness and accountability across the public sector.
As well as acting as a regulator, we advise individuals and organisations about their rights and responsibilities regarding unsolicited electronic marketing messages.
We provide guidance to organisations and advise people on their right to obtain information about the environment held by public authorities and some private sector organisations.
