Drupal Starshot logoStarshot aims to build the new default download of Drupal. A package built on Drupal core, including refined common features from the contributed project ecosystem to create a great user experience out of the box. Starshot is built on top of results from recent initiatives like Recipes, Project Browser, and Automatic Updates to take Drupal to new heights.

The result of Starshot will be a fast-moving Open Source product that enables site builders without Drupal experience to easily create a new Drupal site and extend it with pre-packaged recipes, all using their browser. It will guide site builders to install recipes for common use cases and innovative capabilities that are immediately useful for production. It will focus on getting people from install to launch really fast and will bring new people and contributors into Drupal and the Open Web.

Project lead Dries Buytaert announced at DrupalCon Portand 2024 that an initial version of Drupal Starshot will be available before the end of 2024.

🧰 Starshot Issues

We are tracking issues for building Starshot itself on the Starshot project's issue queue. For example, we are tracking what Starshot needs from Recipes, Automatic Updates and Project Browser there. There is also the Starshot blocker tag on issues, that is used in core and contributed projects which are required for Starshot's release.

Each major component of Starshot has their own set of issues. Check out the Project Browser roadmap to stability, as well as the Recipes Phase 2 roadmap plus the Automatic Updates roadmap to stability. The Experience Builder Initiative also has a kanban board of their current issues.

💬 Starshot Chat

The Drupal community actively uses Slack to collaborate. It is free to join and you can get involved with the leaders of initiatives there. Most teams have regular chat meetings that are possible to join asynchronously too. Join in the #starshot, #autoupdates, #experience-builder, #project-browser and #recipes channels.

Open source Drupal Starshot slide deck with recording is now available

First slides of the Drupal Starshot introduction slide deck

Lauri Timmanee and myself presented a keynote on Drupal Starshot at Drupal Developer Days 2024 two weeks ago in Burgas, Bulgaria. We got requests from many people that more content on Starshot would be great, so we decided to open source our slide deck! The organizers just published the video recording as well, so while we did not put in speaker notes to these slides, you can get the details from the recording.

Feel free to make a copy of the slides and present this at your company, meetup, Drupal 11 launch party, and so on!

Announcing the Drupal Starshot Advisory Council

A group of people in a futuristic setting having a meeting in an open forum with a space background.

I'm excited to announce the formation of the Drupal Starshot Advisory Council. When I announced Starshot's Leadership Team, I explained that we are innovating on the leadership model by adding a team of advisors. This council will provide strategic input and feedback to help ensure Drupal Starshot meets the needs of key stakeholders and end-users.

The Drupal Starshot initiative represents an ambitious effort to expand Drupal's reach and impact. To guide this effort, we've established a diverse Advisory Council that includes members of the Drupal Starshot project team, Drupal Association staff and Board of Directors, representatives from Drupal Certified Partners, Drupal Core Committers, and last but not least, individuals representing the target end-users for Drupal Starshot. This ensures a wide range of perspectives and expertise to inform the project's direction and decision-making.

Experience Builder week 4: annotated data model test

My Monday started with a pleasant surprise that is only possible in cross-timezone collaborations: Ted “tedbow” 1 had made a huge leap forward on #3450957: Prevent modules from being uninstalled if they provide field types used in an Experience Builder (XB) field, where he’s working on the first aspect where XB’s JSON blobs in the database must be queried.

Experience Builder week 3: shape matching

Monday was a U.S. holiday, which meant I was able to go full-steam ahead on the storage MR for Experience Builder (XB) that I started the prior week. On Tuesday, I continued that work, and spun off a second MR that allows changing the source type and source value … for which I shared a 2.5-minute screencast in #experience-builder late on Tuesday.

Experience Builder week 2: outlines emerging

Experience Builder (XB) must be able to render single directory components (SDC) … but really any component. Furthermore, to achieve the compromiseless UX we want, we’ll need both client-side and server-side rendering (to avoid network latency): isomorphic rendering. So on Monday May 20, Ben “bnjmnm”, Mateu “e0ipso”, Lee “larowlan”, Théodore “nod_”, Pierre “pdureau” and Tim met in a truly global meeting (from Lee’s Australia to Kris’ U.S. West Coast), with very interesting conclusions.

These are not current concerns for XB, but they will eventually be — this was early alignment to avoid wasting time.

Announcing Drupal Starshot sessions

A few weeks ago at DrupalCon Portland, I announced Drupal Starshot, a project to create the new default download of Drupal. Built on Drupal Core, Drupal Starshot will include popular features from the contributed project ecosystem. It focuses on delivering a great user experience right out of the box. Drupal Starshot builds on recent initiatives like Recipes, Project Browser, and Automatic Updates to elevate Drupal to new heights.

The response has been incredible! Hundreds of people have pledged their support on the Drupal Starshot page, and many more have asked how to get involved. Over the past few weeks, we have been planning and preparing, so I'm excited to share some next steps!

Experience Builder week 1: 0.x branch opened!

Acquia is sponsoring me full-time to operate as the tech lead for Experience Builder — thanks!

Dries announced the formal start of the Experience Builder initiative at DrupalCon Portland 2024, on May 6. Shortly before DrupalCon, Drupal core product manager Lauri already shared the findings of the deep & wide research he conducted in prior months, which resulted in a set of 64 requirements.

Working toward an Experience Builder

At DrupalCon Lille 2023, Dries announced a new strategic initiative to build a Next Generation Page Builder. The goal of the initiative was to improve and expand Layout Builder to provide a truly intuitive out-of-the-box page building experience.
