Do You Use Adobe Audition?

Hi all. Jason Levine from Adobe, again.

Today's inquiry is around the use (and frequency of use) of Adobe Audition. Whether in your video workflow or in general... do you use Audition? If so, how do you use it/what for? And if not... why not? What's your replacement/alternative? You know I love all the nerdy details.

If you've ever watched my livestreams, you'll know that I'm using Audition...for everything. Even composition and tracking of all music, for anything I do. Yes. I struggle through it (because I, like many, use soft-synths/VSTi's) but I do this because I don't use MIDI or sequencing, so everything is played/is a live performance -- because it has to be. Again, I wouldn't mind sequencing (sometimes I do crave it) but I also prefer live recording, and it's just something I've done for a very long time.

I truly believe that Audition's strength is in super-fast, transparent audio EDITING, particularly when it comes to spectral editing and also dithering. I've used all the ones out there (starting w/the original Sound Designer in the late 80s/early 90s) and Audition is still my go-to.

I'm really curious about your usage (and I'll be posting this to the AU subreddit a little later).

As always, if the answer is no, hell no, or some variation thereof... let me know. I want to hear it. I'd love to see Audition (ultimately) become a larger part of your workflow. Thanks, as always.

Adobe Audition vs Davinci Fairlight?

I'm editing in Premiere and color grading in Davinci and I usually use Audition for my Audio needs. Since Resolve got quite a bit better in the video editing department I was wondering how good Fairlight is in comparison with Audition for mix and master videos with multiple songs and voice overs?

Adobe Audition vs Audacity. What's your experience?

Got Lavelia's microphone from a friend.

Wanted to record an audio for one project and I wanted to know which software is probably better to record and remove things like background noise, reflection etc. environments here are not quite quiet enough.

Have no experience in doing Voice overs.

Tried AI TTS at first but got feedback that it's worse and I have to use my own voice.

Any advice or tips are much appreciated.

Thanks.

Adobe Audition Crashing

Hi!

Adobe Audition keeps crashing. I've tried getting help from support with this 4 separate times-- the last time it seemed to work for about 3 weeks and then yesterday it started crashing again. Happens anywhere from 3 minutes into editing to ~20 minutes in. Auto-save also seems to fail when it crashes, and even if I manually save it, that sometimes doesn't work.

I'm using a 2021 Macbook Pro with 16GB of memory, OS is Monterey. Had a similar issue on my old macbook as well. It's always when I'm making really simple edits in the multitrack editor, doesn't matter what file I'm using, I have no plug-ins at all, everything is up to date. I don't have this issue when using other Adobe software like premiere or photoshop.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue and figured out a way to resolve it!

thanks!!

Wondering about the benefits of Adobe Audition as a DAW for voice actors

Hello. I'm in need of a new DAW, since Garageband doesn't seem ideal for my needs. I'm attracted to Reaper, which I know musicians love, and it's a one-time negligible fee (still $60, I believe). The question, then, is why people are paying $20 a month for Adobe Audition. There must be a reason for agreeing to a subscription that quickly adds up, rather than going for a DAW such as Reaper. Any thoughts, experience would be welcome. Thanks!

Best way to normalize audio track in Adobe Audition.

I know I can use

Match Audio loudness Compress single band Normalize vocals

But I haven't figure out exactly how to normalize a single track where one of my cohost will not speak into the mic at some points and laugh right into it at other times. In the end I have to be manually fixing all the low and high parts and it gets to be too much.

I know mic control would help with this and I'm working on it with them but for now I'm stuck with what I have recorded.

Any advice or actual steps to make the whole track an even sound?

Adobe Audition 23.3 Adds Some Quality of Life Updates

Just happened to look at recent release notes and saw that on Monday Adobe Audition rolled out a new update which lets you add markers to the clips themselves in a multitrack project. Previously, you could only add markers to the timeline -- so markers wouldn't shift if you moved clips around

You can also now easily copy and paste effects from one track to another. Lastly, they added variable playback speed.

It unfortunately feels rare for Audition to add some truly helpful updates, so thank you Adobe! More of this please!

My Adobe Audition Mixdown Process

Every now and then someone asks for advice on mixing down podcasts. Here is how we do it at Certified Rotten. Of course these settings are fine tuned for our recording environment but I think they would work for most situations.

SETUP4 Shure PGA48-LC dynamic microphonesBEHRINGER Audio Interface 4-Channel UMC404HD.Windows 10 Laptop.Adobe Audition for recording and editing.Tips: I make sure the gain is dialed in on each channel to aid with the noise gate. I also record at 192kHz. Some people don't do this. I do because I want the maximum amount of captured data so when I begin compressing the files I have the highest quality sample to work with. Working with 192kHz requires more processing power and slows down the application. If this is an issue for you, record at 48kHz.

EDITING STEP 1

I load the 4 mono channels into Audition and drag them into the Batch Process window. I have a Favorite called Podcast Complete which applies the following effects in order:

  1. Dynamics (Noise Gate) — Using the Dynamics effect under Amplitude and Compression, use the following settings with the Noise Gate checked. Make sure Compressor and Expander are NOT checked. Threshold: -38 dB. Attack: 1ms. Release: 500 ms. Hold: 100 ms. This effect removes most of the crosstalk between the microphones. It also removes breath sounds and background noise.

  2. Graphic Equalizer (20 band) — Boosts the higher registries. All values 0 except the following. 5.6k: 2.9. 8k: 5.1. 11.3k: 6.2. 16k: 5.1. >22k: 2.9.

  3. Parametric Equalizer — Boosts the low end. Disable all bands except for Low. Change the values to 120Hz and 3db. Make sure the width is set to the rigid option not the smooth option.

  4. Dynamics (Compressor) — *Compresses and boosts the audio. Tick the box next to compressor. Make sure Noise Gate and Expander are not checked. Threshold: -10dB. Radio: 4. Attack: 1ms. Release: 50ms. MakeUp: 10dB.*5: Normalize — Normalize to -1dB.

  5. Hard Limit — Compresses and boosts the audio one last time. Use the Peak option and set the values to the following. Maximum Amplitude: -1.0dB. Input Boost: 4.0dB. Look-Ahead Time: 7ms. Release Time: 100ms.

  6. 48 KhZ Resample — Sample Rate: 48000Hz. Quality: 100%. Channels: Same as Source. Bit Depth: Same as Source. Dithering: Disabled.

EDITING STEP 2

The more powerful your machine the faster Step 1 will go. Slower machines will take longer. After the effects are applied, I drag the tracks into a new multitrack file. I then apply the following effects to the Master Track at the bottom of the screen.

  1. FFT Filter — This is my pop filter. Even with screens p's still pop from time to time on the microphone. Set to default then add 3 extra dots to the line, bringing the total to 5 dots. Working from left to right, move the dots to the following positions. 20hZ --> -2dB. 57.9Hz --> -9dB. 80hZ --> -300dB. 119.5Hz --> 0.1dB. 22050Hz --> 0dB. Set the scale to Logarithmic. Set the advanced section to FFT Size: 8192 and Window to Blackman.

  2. Speech Volume Leveler — I use a very low setting of this, as it's quite powerful, but I find just a small amount of leveling helps even out the different voices. I ONLY use this on the Master track because using it on the individual tracks can cause problems. Target Volume Level: -12.5dB. Leveling Amount: 50%. Target Dynamic Range: 60dB. Boost Low Signals is UNCHECKED. Under advanced, uncheck the compressor. Check the Noise Gate and set the Noise Offset to 15dB.

  3. Hard Limiter — I use one more Hard Limiter because the above two effects push the audio above 0dB. I set the Limiter to these settings. 1. Maximum Amplitude: -0.1dB. Input Boost: 0dB. Look-Ahead Time: 7ms. Release Time: 100ms.

FINAL NOTES

Now I mixdown all the tracks into a single FLAC. I open the FLAC file and I do a couple things. I chop out the mic tests we did before beginning. If I need to edit out any mistakes I can do it here.

I also use the Shorten Silence feature under Diagnostics. If you aren't familiar with this feature there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube. I think Mike Russell has one and that's who I would suggest watching. I set Fix By to Shorten Silence and set it to 600ms. What this does is it searches the file and finds any pauses in audio longer than 600ms. It then shortens that silence down to 600ms. You can play with this but I find this setting to be the sweet spot.

Now I save the file. This is my Master. I keep all my Master tracks backed up in case I ever need to go back and change something. Now that I have this file, I insert it in a new multitrack and this is where I add music and effects before finally saving the file to MP3 @ 44.1kHz and 112 CBR.

Adobe Audition softwares-like to run on Linux

Hey there,

My name is Amanda and I am a voice actress and audio engineer.
I've already worked with Music production (Cubase and Pro Tools) in the past but now I focus on: vocal audio editing (my recordings and other people's recordings, both in-studio and out of the studio), mixing and mastering. For this, I've found Audition to be very, very easy to use and very efficient in my spectrum analyzing, vocal recording improvements and audio repairing/cleaning.

I am planning to migrate to Linux (probably Debian) and I have a close person/adm to assist me with that.
The point is I am not satisfied with the software available to run on Linux in terms of "audio editing", "audio analyzing" and "audio repairing. Please note that I do not work with VSTs, sequencing, synthesizers, and MIDI anymore. I need a solid, paid, pro-high-quality spectrum analyzer, that also allows me to mix and master professionally.

Before I decided to experiment with Linux, I was planning to buy Izotope RX7 and invest time to study the plugin. In other words, I am willing to move forward in terms of difficulty, not moving backward, like using Audacity's spectrum view (which I tested and is not compatible with the specificity I need in my work).

I appreciate your thoughtful and experienced comments and suggestions on this.
Hateful, immature comments will simply be ignored.

Thank you!

Time Code from Adobe Audition into ETC EOSnomad

Hey everyone,

I'm working on a light show for a quarantine contest and I wanted to actually start time coding a show. This is my first time actually doing anything similar to time code and I thought maybe I could use Adobe Audition 2020 to output some sort of MIDI Signal or something to trigger cues with markers in EOSnomad. Has anyone ever tried something similar? Do I need to use any external hardware? Please let me know I'd really love to expand my timecoding skills!

Guide to making the Shadow Fiend voice effect with Adobe Audition.

For curiosity's sake, let's have a scenario: "Wow, I really like Shadow Fiend's voice lines. The effect is awesome! But I have no idea how to recreate it! I have Adobe Audition but I just don't know how!"

Well, friend, I did the hard work for you-- it isn't exact due to the variance of the human voice, but I'll explain:

The issue with recreating Shadow Fiend's voice is: Gasp! The terrifying Multitrack mix.

And not only that-- you'll need to edit about 5 different voice files-- but have no fear, it's not as intimidating as you think!

Step 1: Record Line.

Step 2: Insert it 6 times into Multitrack Mixdown.

Step 3: Add the Graphic Equalizer (10 Bands) effect into Track 1, Track 2, and Track 3. With this parameter:

<31: 20.

63: 17.

125: 5.5.

After this, you'll have to modify the second and third, but we'll keep Track 1 like this to make it the "Deep" one.

Still with me? You've got this, I know you do.

Step 4: Add the Pitch Shifter effect. Track 1 should have Semi-tones set at -4(or deeper, depending on your voice) and can vary in Cents. I put mine to 95 due to my own voice.

Step 5: Repeat Track 2, but set the Semi-tones to 4. This will be your "squeaky" or "high" voice.

Step 6: Add the Full Reverb effect to Track 1 and Track 2. Feel free to modify to suit your needs:

Decay Time: 92 ms.

Pre-Delay Time: 3.4 ms.

Diffusion: 670 ms.

Perception: 29.

Room Size: 20.

Dmension: 0.66.

High Pass Cutoff: 45 Hz.

Dry: 42.3%.

Reverberation: 2%.

Early Reflections: 1%.

Repeat for Track 2.

Step 7: Set Track 1 to +2 decibels/+2 on the volume dial(left dial above the white line/right under where it says "Track 1"). Set Track 1 to -13.5.

Right, so we've got those two down...

Now for the next three.

Step 8: Add the Surround Reverb effect to Track 3. Set the Impulse to "Octagonal Room" with these parameters:

Room Site: 100%.

Damping LF/Damping HF: 70%.

Pre-Delay: 100 ms.

Front Width/Surround Width: 100%.

C Wet Level: 97%.

Mix: 100%.

Gain: 7.5%.

Step 9: Add the Echo effect to Track 3 with these parameters:

Delay Time: 990 ms(or less, depending.)

Feedback: 9.5%.

Echo Level: 75%.

Successive Echo Equalization:

86 to 1.4K: -15.

3k: -4.45.

7.4k: -5.10

22k: -4.

Step 10: Set volume of Track 3 to -8.5, or until it is less audible than the other two.

Nicely done. Now the next two are simple:

Step 11: Copy + Paste Track 1 and Track 2. Make Track 4 and Track 5 with these.

Step 12: Add the Echo effect to Track 4 and 5 with these parameters:

Delay Time: 990 ms(220 onto the higher pitched track. Make it less if needed for either.)

Feedback: 11.80%.

Echo Level: 75%.

Successive Echo Equalization is the same as Track 3.

Step 13: Set volume to -11 for both tracks.

That should be it! Modify as you see fit. Make sure to go to File > Export > Multitrack Mixdown > Entire Session to save!

I need help with Adobe Audition...Cicada-based

Okay, I've been playing with the Interconnectedness.mp3 and am pretty close to revealing its secrets. Here's what I did:

- Based on the Liber Primus cover image, I manipulated the Mp3 and saved it as four new versions in the following ways:

  1. Applied a -90º phase shift (based on the Nebuchadnezzar image on the right being rotated nearly 90º counter-clockwise from the original)

  2. Reversed the track (based on the Newton image being flipped horizontally)

  3. Inverted the original track (based on the Ancient of Days image being flipped vertically)

  4. Reversed the original track and applied a +90º phase shift (based on the Nebuchadnezzar image on the right being flipped horizontally and then rotated nearly 90º clockwise)

I then took those four new tracks and put them into a multitrack mix and exported it as a new Mp3.

Scanning the spectrogram of the new Mp3 is revealing some characters..but, it isn't really very clear. Here is part of what I can see:

https://preview.redd.it/c7chtbsw3gz41.png

This image has been tweaked in Photoshop to try and make it clearer, but...it isn't quite clear enough. The red lettering is just what I see (or think I see). The number at the end could be either 163, 153 or 151 from what I can tell.

Does anyone in this group have any great knowledge of Adobe Audition that could help me in making this more clear? This all sits above the actual music, in the 2k-10k Hz range. What do I have to do to make this area of the file more pronounced? Amplify muddies it up even more...

I'll keep researching to try and figure it out...but, if anyone out there is a sound designer with a working knowledge of Audacity...any input would be GREATLY appreciated.

Adobe Audition Let's Play audio issues

Hi,

For my Let's Plays, I use my phone to record my reactions, Elgato to record the gameplay video and audio (and separate live commentary), and I use Adobe Audition to record a backup of my commentary since sometimes the Elgato version isn't as clear or has messed up in the past.

Unfortunately, for some reason the adobe audition audio has issues syncing with my iPhone video, even after I convert it through handbreak. I've tried recording in 44100 and 48000 and both have caused off sync issues. It adds a ton of extra time and stress trying to get my videos back in sync.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong or have any advice that can help when recording audio?

Thank you!

How difficult is it to learn Pro Tools after Adobe Audition?

I’m taking an audio production course right now and since the focus is on NPR-style newscasts we’re mainly working with Adobe Audition. I’ve gotten somewhat comfortable using it and even though I don’t really know the nuances of the software, I’m slowly getting a handle on the basics of editing and mixing. Now that I’m starting to apply for audio jobs, mainly in longer form/podcast projects, a lot of them specify that they use Pro Tools, even if they don’t exactly require prior knowledge. I’m thinking of trying to learn PT in my spare time and am curious about how transferable the skills are that I learned in Audition. Has anyone here made the switch and has advice?

Adobe Audition CC 2014 on Vista!

To start off with, This will take a lot of tinkering and if this post gets a bit more recognition I might make a tutorial on how you could make this work. But as for now I might find out some ways on how I could get more modern Adobe Programs working on Vista and I don't want to end off on Audition 2014.
