Absolute bellend. To be fair, most people don't even bother checking the size and I'm pretty sure the cabin crew don't give half a shit either.

This guy looks like he changes lanes 6 times between 2 traffic lights trying to get 1 car ahead and eventually is at the back of the line anyway.

Edited

God I hate those people. Guy overtook me twice, but gambled the wrong lane at traffic light and kept ending up behind me while I was simply flowing with traffic. Then at some roundabout exit where I had to let a pedestrian on the pedestrian crossing, the guy started honking like crazy, and then overtook me almost causing an accident with traffic coming from the other direction, to be next to me at the next traffic light again. His aggressive driving style was exactly as fast as my laid back one...

u/notthathungryhippo avatar

when i was younger, i used to drive like the person you’re describing. i honestly thought i was saving time by driving aggressively. one day, during my commute to work, i drove past a coworker on the highway and proceeded to do aggressive things as i always did. i was waiting at the last traffic light before turning into my office building complex and wondering how far ahead of my coworker i was.

“surely i’m ahead of them by 10 to 15 mins.”

about 30 seconds later she pulled up behind me. it was at that moment i realized driving aggressively did nothing to save time.

and as i got older i realized i was putting others in danger and putting unnecessary strain on my car. anyway, that was one of those turning points in my life for me. i hope other aggressive drivers can read this and learn a lesson from my mistakes.

u/Pons__Aelius avatar

And you were likely using 20-30% more fuel for the same journey.

Even just driving in the inside lane on a motorway. I've done the same journey whizzing past people, and also just cruising behind a van in the slow lane. And the time save per hour is so small. It just feels faster because you're passing people.

more replies More replies
u/alreadytaken334 avatar

Plot twist, as soon as you passed her she became enraged and also started driving aggressively.

No seriously, good for you for learning your lesson. I can't tell you how many times someone has been speeding and passing everyone like an asshole just to come up to the first traffic light and now they are only one car length ahead of everyone they worked so hard to pass. The danger never seemed worth it.

Always wanted to do a reality TV show with these type of people. Basically filming there stupid behavior almost causing accidents and being assholes. Then when you pull up at the same light jump out with the film crew and ask them if it was worth it?

I live in a fair size city but you can take the freeway from one side to the other in about 10 minutes. Just don't understand why people weave in an out of traffic speeding to save 30 seconds of time with the possibility of changing someone's life forever.

Honking gets severe. No move.

Green light starts flashing. No move. Short fuse dude going nuts.

Suddenly, 1st car crosses the junction at half a green blink + orange. Light goes red.

Honky guy had to wait for the next one. And everyone’s looking at him, bc of all the noise he made…

Not on EasyJet, who they seem to be flying with.

I witnessed check-in charge someone for hold luggage because although their carry-on case was the correct size (using the same apparatus), the wheels meant it was unable to fit in there.

So, yes, they absolutely do use those as a way of charging you more.

u/KrtekJim avatar

Easyjet also got caught out a few years back using smaller "cages" for the baggage size at the boarding gate than they had at check-in. So you think you're fine because your bag fit in the cage at check-in, but when boarding it doesn't, and suddenly they're telling you that you have to pay extra and put it in the hold.

u/NachhaltigfHAF avatar

Can confirm - travel a lot for work and always have the same carry-on. Never an issue with the more fancy/national airlines.

Suddenly with Easyjet, Transavia (or other cheap airlines) it is an issue.

Even had them taking me in on the first flight and asking me to pay on the return flight with the same airlines.

At this point, I've just accepted it's a gamble.

u/Presidentofjellybean avatar

Never been checked in my life, with probably....50 Ryanair flights behind me. Maybe depends on the country? Or the airport(s)? Or that I never travel with hard-shelled hand luggage?

those things are just decoration… they maybe used them for half an hour until they realized you can’t have everyone put their bag in there and then argue when there’s 300 people on a flight…

Depends on the airline. I was on a budget airline once where they literally put every roller bag in the sizer. Took forever to board.

Sometimes the have this cardboard box they put over your luggage so they can do a speedier check.

u/BrunoEye avatar

In the past decade of flying Ryanair they've checked it once, when the plane was delayed by over an hour and some assholes had nothing better to do.

I present to you wizzair. Everything I've flown them they have checked every bag.

In their defense I'm not sure how they are paying for fuel given how much the tickets cost, so them collecting extra bag fees might be the only way.

There's one of these right as you board the plane here. It just reads

You can take as much emotional baggage as you like but if your bag doesn't fit in here you can't take it with you.

No one has ever checked mine.

I once skipped this on a regional flight only to discover my bag didn't fit in the overhead on the tiny plane they put us on. Embarrassing, had to do the walk (well, jog) of shame back up the jetway and check it at the gate!

You could spot guys like that a mile off, along with those that will instantly jump up and queue to board regardless of which boarding group they're in (strangely anyone with overtly religious clothing/accessories falls into this category) and those that will paw cluelessly at automated passport controls.

My god I hated Stansted Airport towards the end of my time in that job

More replies

Precisely.

More replies

Now whoever removes this bag becomes King/Queen of the Airport. To destroy the tyranny of extra baggage cost and late, canceled flights.

To be fair, airlines are fucking atricious when it comes to baggage sizes, so they deserve to get cheated.

Edited

The issue comes down to when everyone and their mother bring on bags that are just below the max size to fit and then next thing you know, the whole overhead bin space is full. I'm a Flight Attendant for a ULCC in the states. We usually only check bags when they obviously don't fit, or someone's just being a complete asshole and clearly didn't pay for a carry on.

Passengers get mad at us because they can't fit their stuff tight above their seats, when In reality most of them didn't even pay for carry ons.

So in trying to cheat the airline, what PAX are sometimes doing is causing the crew more trouble for things they have absolutely no control over.

edit: when I said complete asshole I meant in general, not because they didn't pay for the carry on, my bad.

I can see the problem. But I think the trouble is that luggage is so expensive that people are incentivised to trick the system.

If everyone had a checked bag included in the flight, then people would bring less carry-on.

More replies

No, we get mad because airlines have the fucking audacity to book their planes full and then before boarding go on the speakers and go, "Turns out this flight is full, there's not enough overhead space because we didn't plan for it, so now some of you have to check your bags. We're going to do this for free, because we're so nice, but really it's a bigger inconvenience for you because now you have to wait in baggage claim. Fuck you, and you're welcome!"

u/weallgotissues avatar

As a flight attendant I disagree. If I compare the amount of handluggage being brought on board now and 14 years ago I am wondering if I work in passenger transport or for a cargo airline. It used to be a small backpack but the trolleys are not checked at my airline which means we take a long time to sort everything out. One of the few airports where this is checked properly is Dublin which saves us about 10 to 15 minutes boarding time on a 737. Imagine saving so much time every flight?? You would arrive on time and even have time to spare. Your luggage would be brought to the belt and you don't have to walk with it for kilometers. The security check would go much faster and walking through customs would be much more efficient.

u/causits avatar

Maybe because 14 years ago they didn't charge for the first bag checked in luggage?

More replies

If I could trust the airlines with my checked luggage, it would be different story.

More replies

You are ignoring the fact that lugagge prices have basically become a scam. These days I have to check my backpack as carry-on. That didn't happen 10 years ago. The first piece of luggage can be 50% of the flight price.

I agree, airports are such unique places filled with unique people. They can be an absolute nightmare if you're in a rush, but if you're comfortably ahead of your flight I think airports are a joy to explore. And as an introvert I love that you can always find a completely secluded place to chill for a bit and restore your energy before going back to exploring and/or your gate.

That being said though, in my experience the food is absurdly bad. You're better off buying some sandwiches in the convenience stores than eating in the restaurants. Somehow ironically the actual airplane food tends to be better.

Fun pro tip I've learned with flying Air Canada recently.... if you don't have a full sized suitcase, but your carry on is too big for those size checkers (but would fit in overhead bins anyways), you can often check your bag for free as they will often ask if anyone would like to check their bags at the gate before boarding.

All 4 flights I took 2 weeks ago had the same request. Saved myself the hassle of finding a spot on the plane (I put it the overhead bins for one flight because i didnt want it checked), and about $100 for regularly checked baggage otherwise.

I saw a video of them charging a guy $80 to bring a skateboard onto the plane after it obviously wouldn't fit into the box. The skateboard surely weighs 0.1x of a suitcase and can be carried in hand. He ended up just snapping it in half and putting it in the box instead. It'd be cheaper to just buy a new deck abroad, whilst also giving money to a person who deserves it rather than a greedy corporation.
