The Festival is presented on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage and co-sponsored by the National Park Service. Admission is always free.
In 2020, with plans to present the Festival on tne National Mall upended by COVID-19, we will present two weeks of digital programming. Called Beyond the Mall, daily sessions will explore the ways people use cultural knowledge to address environmental change. Programs will focus on Northeast Brazil and the United Arab Emirates, with additional events presented in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon and the Smithsonian Conservation Commons. Programs will also address the national conversation on race and intersectional discrimination. #BeyondTheMall programming will run daily June 24–July 5, and weekly all summer and fall.
