                    Hard waste

                    All City of Melbourne residential ratepayers are entitled to one free hard waste collection each year.

                    ​​​​​​​​​​​If you live in a high-rise building with an on-site building manager, they will organise a hard waste collection on your behalf.​​

                    Commercial ratepayers (businesses) are not entitled to a hard waste collection.

                    Spring Clean 2019

                    Every household is also entitled to an additional free kerbside hard waste collection each spring.

                    Free hard waste collections are available during October.

                    Bookings are essential.

                    Hard waste collections may occur on the Monday or Tuesday of your collection week. If your waste hasn’t been collected by 4pm on Tuesday, please let us know.

                    Be sure to specify what will be placed out for collection and where the hard waste will be placed (at the front, rear or side of the property).

                    What we will collect

                    We will collect up to one cubic metre of hard waste per collection. You can put it out on the kerbside the day before collection.

                    Types of hard waste that we collect includes:

                    • household white goods and electrical appliances such as fridges, dishwashers, washing machines (doors must be removed) and televisions
                    • hot-water services
                    • broken furniture
                    • mattresses
                    • sofas
                    • BBQs
                    • scrap metal (no longer than 1.5 m)
                    • timber (no longer than 1.5 m)
                    • paint tins (dry paint and lids off)
                    • bikes.

                    What we won't collect

                    In a hard waste collection we do not collect:

                    • recyclables including plastic containers, aluminium cans, paper and cardboard
                    • domestic waste including garbage bags
                    • renovation waste material including carpet, sinks, toilets and plasterboard
                    • building waste material including brick, stone, concrete, soil, timber, roofing iron, steel and metal
                    • hazardous waste such as asbestos
                    • liquid waste including chemicals, paint, and motor oil
                    • garden waste
                    • car bodies, parts, tyres and batteries
                    • gas cylinders
                    • polystyrene and styrofoam.

                    Any unacceptable material will not be collected and you must take it back inside your property.

                    Problem with your collection?

                    If your hard waste is not collected by 4pm on the booked collection day, you can report it online here. You will need your booking date and reference number. 

                    Disposing of other material

                    If you have additional material that is not accepted through our hard waste collection, there are various other disposal options, including:

                    Bins and skips

                    You may need to use a bin or skip for larger quantities or other types of waste not accepted through our hard waste collection, such as for waste material from building and construction activities. A bins and skips permit is required for bins/skips placed on a road or City of Melbourne-owned land.
