SLAPSTICK Lookit! 1995

Artist Biography by

Rowdy ska-punk outfit Slapstick managed to not only inspire a legion of kids to start their own bands in the mid-'90s, but their popularity and influence on the third wave ska revival was felt long after the band's mere three-year existence was over. Slapstick formed in 1993 and the raucous group quickly saw itself sitting at the top of the underground Chicago punk scene. Comprised of Brendan Kelly (vocals), Dan Andriano (bass/vocals), Peter Anna (trombone), Matt Stamps (guitar), Dan Hanaway (trumpet/vocals), and Rob Kellenberger (drums/vocals), the guys appeared on various compilations and released one full-length album during their short run. Recorded in the fall of 1995, Lookit! was released early the next year on Skankin' Pickle's own Dill Records. When Mike Park quit Skankin' Pickle, he formed his own label (Asian Man Records) and Slapstick was one of four bands he took with him. However, almost as quickly as they began, the band suddenly broke up in 1996. Slapstick reunited once on November 23, 1997 for a packed one-off benefit show at Chicago's Fireside Bowl. The band wound up playing another show right after the first as well, due to the night's overwhelming turnout. Asian Man issued an eponymous compilation record in 1997 that contained all of the band's recorded songs, which included eight unreleased tracks. Following Slapstick's demise, its members went on to join and/or create a plethora of acts, including: the Lawrence Arms, Tuesday, the Broadways, Alkaline Trio, the Honor System, Colossal, Duvall, Less Than Jake, Smoking Popes, and The Falcon. In June 2006, the live DVD Reunion Show appeared on Asian Man, documenting Slapstick's last performance from the Fireside Bowl with additional commentary by Kelly and Kellenberger

TRUSTY "Goodbye, Dr. Fate" 1995

Artist Biography by

Combining influences ranging from indie rock's original melodies to alternative rock's unique and dazzling references, Trusty's creations distinctly provided the most flammable aspects of the punk rock revival style. Forming in Little Rock, AR, in 1989, Trusty first appeared with a lineup consisting of James Brady (guitar, vocals), Bobby Matthews (guitar, vocals), Paul (bass), and drummer Bircho. During the succeeding months, the band released its first demo and shortly afterward Trusty, the group's first and eponymous debut album. In the following year, bassist Paul left, and was later replaced by Brad Long, formerly a member of Sobering Consequences. In 1992, the crew decided to relocate to Washington, D.C., releasing the single Cockatoo shortly before suffering its second lineup change when drum wizard Bircho abandoned the band and Jim Schaffer filled in the position.
Goodbye Dr. Fate, Trusty's second full-length disc, showed up in 1993, months before the band embarked on its first major tour. Gaining a substantial fan base and capturing their better tunes on-stage, the quartet eventually dedicated the subsequent years to two nationwide tours. Fourth Wise Man, Trusty's second release for the Dischord Records label, hit the record stores in 1996, and in that same year the band made its debut tour in Europe. However, in July 1997, months before entering its third extensive U.S. tour, Trusty announced they were disbanding. In 1999, Brady and Schaffer, along with Norman Mayer Group's Kathy Cashel, decided to assemble a new crew dubbed the Blisters.

PRIMAL SCREAM Kowalski 1997

Artist Biography by

Screamadelica
Primal Scream's career could in many ways be read as a microcosm of British indie rock in the '80s and '90s. Bobby Gillespie formed the band in the mid-'80s while drumming for noise-pop pioneers the Jesus and Mary Chain. Primal Scream pursued a different kind of indie pop -- one that was sweet and jangly, not dark and menacing -- and while these early records were quite influential on the C-86 indie scene in the U.K. in the mid-'80s, Gillespie abandoned the sound at the close of the '80s after being introduced to acid house by Alan McGee, the head of Creation Records. Scream signed with Creation and cut Screamadelica with producers Andrew Weatherall and Hugo Nicholson. Screamadelica's fusion of indie pop and dance broke down musical boundaries and changed the face of British pop music in the '90s, helping to make dance and techno acceptable to the rock mainstream. Primal Scream confounded expectations with Give Out But Don't Give Up, the 1994 sequel to Screamadelica which abandoned dance for classic rock boogie. This abrupt switch in sound established a pattern the band would follow for the rest of their career, where they'd pursue a different direction from a subsequent album, but the twin releases of 1997's heady dance album Vanishing Point and its experimental successor XTRMNTR pushed the group back into the underground, where they'd concentrate on making art-pop on such albums as 2006's Riot City Blues and 2013's More Light

Artist Biography by

Empty Bottles, Broken Hearts
The Murder City Devils are a Seattle-based punk band who like their music fierce, raw, and powerful, with a garage rock edge in the melodies and a muscular approach that recalls old-school punk favorites the Misfits and the Dead Boys, but with a dark edge that shakes off any accusations of hipster nostalgia-mongering. The Murder City Devils were formed in 1996 by vocalist Spencer Moody, guitarist Dann Gallucci, and bassist Derek Fudesco; all three had previously been members of Area 51, and when they decided to form a new band, they turned to their friend Joshua Plague (singer with Mukilteo Fairies and Behead the Prophet) for a name. Plague had dreamed up the handle of the Murder City Devils for a group in Olympia, WA with more potential than ambition, and when that band fizzled out, the new combo borrowed it with their permission. Teaming with Nate Manny on guitar and Coady Willis on drums, the Murder City Devils made their recorded debut with a three-song 7" on Empty Records in 1997; later the same year, the Sub Pop-affiliated indie label Die Young Stay Pretty Records issued the band's self-titled debut album. The second Murder City Devils album, titled Empty Bottles, Broken Hearts, appeared in 1998, and the band was moved up to the official Sub Pop roster for the release. Gallucci and Fudesco had both added keyboard parts during the recording of the album, and when the band set out on tour in support, they added a full-time keyboard player to the lineup, Leslie Hardy. (The band also cited their roadie Gabe as a full member of the group on their record sleeves.) Extensive touring followed, though the Devils found the time to drop 7" singles on Die Young Stay Pretty and Hopscotch before the year was out. The Murder City Devils offered a glimpse into their diverse influences on their third full-length LP, 2000's In Name and Blood, which in addition to 11 new originals included covers of tunes by Neil Diamond ("I'll Come Running") and the Misfits ("Hybrid Moments"). In 2001, the band released a six-song EP, Thelema, which found them exploring more ambitious musical territory with more measured tempos, a bit of added production polish, and an acoustic-based Christmas number, "364 Days." The Devils set out on a U.S. tour after Thelema's release, but when they came back to Seattle for a hometown show at Halloween 2001, they announced it would be their final performance; the concert was recorded and videotaped for posterity, and a live CD from the show, R.I.P., came out in 2003. Fudesco and Gallucci went on to form the short-lived combo Death Wish Kids, while Gallucci became a member of Modest Mouse and Fudesco joined Pretty Girls Make Graves. In 2006, the Murder City Devils reunited to play a set at the local Seattle music festival the Capitol Hill Block Party; the show was a success and since then, the group has played occasional one-off shows and gone on a short 2009 tour of the West Coast, with the band announcing that they've begun work on new material.
