More deaths among those given hydroxychloroquine versus standard care, researchers report
A malaria drug touted by President Donald Trump for treating the new coronavirus showed no benefit in a large study at VA hospitals.http://apne.ws/OpfrQxL
.@AP: “The nationwide study was not a rigorous experiment. But with 368 patients, it’s the largest look so far of #hydroxychloroquine with or without the antibiotic #azithromycin” in connection with #COVIDー19.https://apnews.com/a5077c7227b8eb8b0dc23423c0bbe2b2 …
About 28% given hydroxychloroquine plus usual care died, versus 11% of those getting routine care alone. About 22% getting the drug plus azithromycin died too, but the diff between that group and usual care was not considered large enough to rule out other factors that could
have affected survival. Hydroxychloroquine made no difference in the need for a breathing machine, either.

Anecdotal (and NOT peer-reviewed) data from hydroxychloroquine use among veterans: Mortality was actually higher among HCQ and HCQ + azithromycin patients. But fewer people on HCQ + AZ were on ventilators... https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.04.16.20065920v1 …pic.twitter.com/UccC6pxWTh
Researchers did not track side effects, but "noted hints that #hydroxychloroquine might have damaged other organs." The drug is known to have potentially FATAL side effects, including altering the heartbeat in a way that could lead to sudden cardiac death.
Important to note that this study has not yet been peer reviewed and was not rigorous: Its medical and scientific value at this point is low at best. New @NIH guidelines released on clinical management of #covid19 today.
They recommend *against* the use of #Hydroxychloroquine & #Azithromycin unless in the context of a clinical trial because of potential toxicities.

I've been very skeptical of #hydroxychloroquine (based on its mechanism)...no surprise, yet another study is NEGATIVE, showing NO BENEFIT.
Yet #hydroxychloroquine is KNOWN to cause potentially FATAL side effects.

“Hydroxychloroquine — I don’t know, it’s looking like it’s having some good results. That would be a phenomenal thing.” Trump on April 3rd “What do you have to lose? Reminder that, when we went on TV to hype the results of the very small study that indicated hydroxychloroquine might be of benefit in treating Covid, Dr. Oz knew full well that such a study had serious limitations.https://apnews.com/a5077c7227b8eb8b0dc23423c0bbe2b2 …
Again, it's not that hydroxychloroquine could never work, it's that the president should not be telling people to take it before it's been studied. You may have noticed he's stopped talking about it recently.https://apnews.com/a5077c7227b8eb8b0dc23423c0bbe2b2 …
