What a long, strange trip ...

This blog is now in its 12th year, started back in February 2007 by Sotise, our correspondent from down under. Bundles of people have contributed over the years, some gone, others holding on and yet others joining and putting their distinctive mark on the contents and direction of the blog. Currently we have about half a dozen active posters and some very generous followers, judging from inputs to our contributions section, but we're always willing to recruit more. Potential authors can get in touch with us c/o our Blogger email addresses. We've had contributors from three continents, with a preponderance of Europeans overall.

The emphasis has been on the free/improv/experimental side of jazz, but with excursions into contemporary and classical music, from Europe and beyond. There are no rules, however; the blog is whatever the posters make of it, and we'd like to keep it that way. We focus on posting out of print material with the objective of drawing attention to music which otherwise might have remained out of sight and out of mind. Due to spam and some past experiences of personal attacks, we 've had to institute a moderator system, so comments may not appear right away, but they will be published.

With these few words, heading on ...

Contributions

Anything our readers and followers would like to contribute goes here. That may include recommendations, reviews, recordings, you name it.

The earlier contributions thread was unfortunately deleted, but we have managed to recover about three years of the last five years of posts. The recovered posts have now been moved to separate posts in the new thread. All links to files are working at the time of writing. If there is anybody out there who has found that their contributions are missing, feel free to repost them or if anybody has downloaded files when they were still available, the same thing applies.  Of course, we welcome any new contributions from our followers, anything that we and you should know about.

Requests

Requests, broken links, re-ups and related topics go here. It may be easier for admins to be attentive to these topics if they are put here and not under the individual posts. There's no guarantee that we may be able to respond to everything, but we'll give it a try.

I've deleted the previous 'Requests' post as it was becoming a bit unwieldy.
I shall start the requests with the last one from the previous thread.

Free form

Anything else goes here. Observations on the general state of the universe and its overall direction are particularly welcome, but also on more mundane matters as you may see fit.

NEW LINKS FOR OLD POSTS

Hi , Heres a new section , which will feature links to the Original posts of things that are just being, or have recently been re uploaded..
the Contributions and request sections are too cluttered , making it difficult to keep track!
comments will be disabled for this section!

Please help us out, if you see comments asking for a re-upload, and you have the files!!
(preferably use only file hosts accessible to free users,do not use these files to make money!)
Please do not ask us to re upload records which are generally available, or have been recently reissued, whatever the format!!

Surely it goes without saying that all views expressed on this Blog , be they impressions  delusions
reveries, political statements, opinions are ours and ours alone , Music stimulates the imagination, so switch off y'r TV, listen ... make up your own minds.

So here goes, I'll start with a few I have recently re uploaded

Gregg Bendian's Interzone - Live In Chicago 2001

Gregg Bendian is famous for his partnership with musicians like Cecil Taylor, Derek Bailey, William Parker or Peter Brotzmann. In the late nineties he had a very exciting band called Interzone that mixed jazz with free improvisation, rock and in a way also prog. The result was an unique sound that appears as one of the most successful in the mix of so different styles. The group has recorded three albums, one for Eremite and two for Atavistic, all oop but still easy to find for a reasonable price in the second hand market. Two musicians have made the trip from the beginning to the end beside Gregg Bendian: The Cline brothers, Nels and Alex. Bassists have changed during the short life of this band. The first cd have been recorded with Mark Dresser, the two others on Atavistic with Steuart Liebig. On this concert that comes from what appeared to be the last tour of the band, Kermit Driscol is the bassist. The show is superbe, intense with a very high musical level. It contains many tracks from their last album Requiem For Jack Kirby recorded around one year before this concert.

MANGELSDORFF - PORTAL QUARTET + MANGELSDORFF SOLO "LIVE IN GENOVA, 1981"

Got this recording from our recent anonymous donor some weeks ago.
Portal is sometimes a bit too much in the 'background'. This might be due to him wandering around on the stage.

DAVE HOLLAND QUARTET & ANTHONY BRAXTON QUARTET "ANTIBES '74 & CHATEAUVALLON '73"

Two excellent concert films. (maybe the two shows aren't complete but surely worth your attention)

The first group is obviously the quartet which recorded the wonderful album "Conference of the Birds" for ECM. The album was recorded on November 30, 1972 in New York. So the concert in France was more than a half year later. Several themes of the LP are easily discernible.
---

For the second ensemble I've found the following description.

Details from Coda 12/73 p.34.
"They played a suite especially written for this occasion. A piece that showed some of the aspects in the music of the multidirectional Anthony Braxton. Wheeler and Braxton matched each other beautifully, Wheeler is a musician who has much in common with Braxton, an intellectual player with a cool sound and a good ear for Braxton's intricate written lines. Their performance ended with a bebop-like tune, and drummer Bobo Shaw (from Black Artists Group from St. Louis, BAG) who throughout the piece had revealed himself as a very musical and inventive drummer, kept the music on fire." (Ib Skovgaard Petersen)

[Some discographies claim other days (23rd f.e.) for the Braxton Quartet but I stick with what's given in the TV production, although the menu gives 1974 which is - obviously - incorrect]

During this concert we have the first performances of Braxton's "Composition No. 23B" and "Composition No. 23D".

DON CHERRY "THIS IS NOT MY MUSIC" (SWEDEN, 1978)

Here's a Swedish TV documentary about Don Cherry. Filmed for the most part in the US and on the island Cherry was living with his family during the 1970s.

With Rashied Ali, James Blood Ulmer, Nana Vasconcelos, Denis Charles, Huss Charles a.o.
Especially the music by Cherry, Ali and Ulmer is great IMO. Sadly it seems there's no other recorded evidence of this trio.

Sam Rivers Trio - live in Foggia 30 April 1980

This is a repost of sorts of a file posted way back on this blog. In the comments section to the original post, Rick Lopez made the very valid point that Sam's scat singing towards the end didn't sound, shall we say, entirely authentic. So I ran it through Audacity to see if anything could be done about it. I made two versions, one with 15 percent speed reduction and one with 20 percent. Listening back, the 20 percent sounded a bit soggy, so I decided to stick with the 15 percent. In other words, this runs at about 85 percent of the original speed. I can't say if I have hit the nail right on the head, but at least it comes off more plausible, and in any case, your ears are the best judge. One more technical note, this was originally posted as a high grade mp3 and is reposted in the flac format to prevent further lossiness.

What we have here is a live concert in Foggia, Italy, on 30 April 1980 with Sam Rivers on multiple instruments and vocals, Dave Holland on bass and Steve Ellington on drums. As for the gig, it's marvellous, really a stayer, one to come back to. Sam Rivers starts out on tenor, switches to soprano, continues on flute interspersed with a bit of vocalising towards the end. In all, the piece runs for 78:28, so one consequence of lowering the speed is you get at least ten minutes extra of Sam and the gang. Can't be bad, eh?

Happy Canada Day

During those last years Nick have posted many great music from Canada. Check his post of the artists jazz band, C.C.M.C, the records from the music gallery editions or the french side of the avant garde like Yves Bouliane etc. You will find many goodies. I thought that this year it could be my turn to celebrate the Canada day to thank him and to continue the series with this cd that features probably one of the guiding light of the Canadian avant garde: Michael Snow.

Visual artist but also musician who plays piano and synthesiser, Snow is an important name in electro acoustic music. he is one of the founding members of CCMC and beside his avant garde playing he have a vaste knowledge of the jazz that you can easily notice if you listen carefully his solo where he can bring some reminiscence of the tradition in an avant garde environment.

Jack Vorvis is less famous, he have been briefly member of CCMC and you can hear him on the excellent « decisive moments, hot real-time electro-acoustic collective composition », unfortunately his discography is very small.

Walden Wimberley & His Musical Friends - What The Pyramid Told Me - self produced 2005

One can think that musicians who stay unknown belong to the sixties or the seventies but even from the recent times we can still discover some musicians that still play in the underground of the underground. It is the case for this talented pianist, if you check on the web you will find almost no informations about him directly. One of his first appearance seems to have been in a band created by Roy Campbell Jr and named « Shades And Colors Of Trane » with Hilliard Greene and Warren Smith. In 2004 and 2005 he made two cdr self produced and only available during his concerts, in 2006 he recorded with Ras Moshe for one of his « Live Spirits » volume, obviously… that’s all.
So if someone have more informations about him it will be appreciated.

Walden Wimberley: piano
Hilliard Greene: bass
Christopher Dean Sullivan: bass
Daniel Carter: saxophone
Ras Moshe: saxophone
Larry Boddie: percussion
Mike Thompson: drums
Recorded live at the Langston Hughes Public Library, Queens N.Y. 2005.

HANNE BOENISCH "JOURNEY TO THE NORTHPOLE" (GERMANY, 1971/72)

The Sratch Orchestra with a.o. Cornelius Cardew, Keith Rowe and John Tilbury

Script and directed by Hanne Boenisch

Produced by the Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film, München.

Germany (Munich, Bavaria) 1971 / 72

****************

Got this documentary from John Tilbury on Wednesday, 29 April 2009 at the Gasteig in Munich, for the first time.
We had invited him for a concert / lecture. During his lecture excerpts of the film were shown.
Afterwards he gave us two or three copies of the DVDr. He added we should 'spread it'.*

Hanne Boenisch has died only some weeks before John Tilbury's concert in Munich.

Around 2015/6 I talked with a friend about this film. He asked wether he could watch and maybe even use it for his lectures at a Munich high school.
I readily agreed and promised him a copy of my copy. But - alas - I did not find the DVDr. After several attempts to locate it I gave up.
It seems I had lost the film during a relocation some months before.
Later that year my friend made some inquires at the BR (Bavarian broadcast) as to wether they would loan him the documentary.
But it was revelead to him that they discarded or destroyed the film!

To my delight I got it again some days ago.

And following Tilbury's idea about spreading this rare documentary I'll offer it here.

Additionally I would like to give the interested reader a link to an interview with John Tilbury.  This conversation was conducted after his book "Cornelius Cardew - a life unfinished" was published.
It is a fitting companion to the documentary - of course to read the book would be even better.

(Beware ;-) this film is only for bi-lingual viewers.
Cardew is heard for the most part talking in German, which he does quite fluently.
But there's a good portion of English to be heard during the 45 minutes .

* it should be clear that it is my responsibility to post the film here - Mr. Tilbury never asked or even encouraged me to do so.

CECIL TAYLOR - BLUE NOTES - MANFRED SCHOOF - MISHA MENGELBERG - THEO LOEVENDIE "FRANCE - ANTIBES+" (1964-69)

This is not music or more exactly it is music but with footage from the respective concerts.
Culled from the French TV.

Among others we have the first concert of the Blue Notes in Europe, just arriving from South-Africa. After the concert and some weeks playing in Antibes at the beach (and elsewhere) they embarked to Zürich were they got offered Dollar Brand's place at the Cafe Africana.

The movie (~ 1:40) is not in high definition but the quality is easily good enough to enjoy these concerts and in case of Taylor's Unit something rather special.

- Blue Notes - Antibes 1964

Art Ensemble of Chicago live in Immanuelskirche, Wuppertal, Germany 1995

Following up my former post of the AEC in Charlottesville in 1983, here is another recording from 1995. By this time, Joseph Jarman had left the Ensemble, so they are down to a quartet. As I mentioned in my last post, the acoustics add another dimension to the music, at the Cabell Hall as well as here, and even more so here, almost prompting the venue itself to be the fifth player, although a passive one. The venue was the Immanuelskirche in Wuppertal, Germany, and from what I can see online, it is designated as a cultural centre with regular musical performances of all kinds. One could add it lends a further spiritual dimension to the music, adding to the spiritual quality that's already there.

The former posting had a version of "Prayer for Jimbo Kwesi" and this one has "Song for Atala", another one of my fave AEC tunes. In the second part, you also get a portion of Roscoe Mitchell's circular breathing for your amazement.

CD 1
01. Unknown - 35:12
02. Song For Atala - 07:48

CD 2
01. Unknown - ß3:47
02. Unknown - 14:37
03. Unknown - 17:18
04. New York Is Full Of Lonely People / Carefree - 09:24
05. Odwalla - 04:35
06. Walking In The Moonlight - 04:36

In all: 97:26.

The tracks are split in such a way so they can be easily fitted onto two cds if one so wishes.

In sum, beautiful music in beatiful surroundings. By the way, I have another recording of the AEC in the Immanuelskirche in 1990, this time with the full quintet, that I could post here if there's an interest.

Art Ensemble of Chicago in Charlottesville 23 September 1984

Some more Joseph Jarman coming up, here with the rest of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. This is a live recording at the Old Cabell Hall, located at the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville. As you can see from the photos below, the Hall is used for musical performances, but also for all sorts of official events, including talks by American presidents. As we know, Charlottesville was in the headlines a couple of years ago for all the wrong reasons, but the student body was clearly on the side of the counter-protesters for, we may add, all the right reasons.

One reason for selecting this one is that it has an extended version of "Prayer for Jimbo Kwesi" which starts the second track on this recording. Definitely hall-like acoustics on this concert which adds the right ambiance to this concert. I once had the opportunity to listen to them in a medieval hall in my hometown which somehow felt entirely appropriate.

The Art Ensemble is here in the usual quintet form. A little later I will post the later quartet in a setting that puts the acoustics in as a sort of fifth player, but we'll get to that.

The track listing is based on a different track splitting than what's on the back cover of the art work appended to this post.

What we hear will be roughly based on this track order:

1. Unknown - 14:12/Zero / Unknown - 24:57/Carefree - 00:54
2. Prayer For Jimbo Kwesi - 30:39/Unknown - 02:44/Chant / Unknown (cut) - 12:44
3. Unknown (cuts in) - 04:59/New York Is Full Of Lonely People - 06:24
4. Funky AEOC (cuts in) / Odwalla - 09:48

As always, enjoy!
