Holy cats, friends! Someone just donated the last $500 we needed to cover all the costs for this letter-writing campaign. Thank you, anonymous friend! Shouting thanks into the ether to you💜🏹That's a lot of stamps!

A very necessary report. Ruthless profiteering--like this indefensible ebook contract in West Virginia, which is still in effect--will never stop being appalling.

We are seriously impressed that more than half of you chose the correct answer: DICTIONARIES! Surveys show that up to 25% of our letters contain a request for a dictionary, making it consistently our #1 request and also a book that we rarely manage to keep in stock. Can you help?

"Incarcerated people deserve the same level of protection and concern as every other person in our community. ... When we fail to protect people in DOC custody, we are working against our own collective self-interest." I can't believe we need to keep saying this, but we do.

Want to help your local prison book program supply books like these? Find your program here! (Although, a caveat: some newer programs, like in Georgia, aren't yet on this list)

Absolutely this. One of our volunteers recently joined an awesome jail librarian and other prison book program volunteers to write about the need for librarians to broaden their fights into (and against) carceral facilities:

A person was removed from their community for 14 years and one of their first acts was to square up with their local library. As an organization whose mission is to keep access inside prisons for people who love and need books, this is a very bittersweet note to consider.

This is an issue that we, as Allegheny County residents, need to actively engage with. Public outcry helped somewhat with the book issue that came up recently, but conditions at the jail are still far from humane. We can make an impact.

Reminiscent of when a Washington prison handed people in solitary confinement a list of oh-so-helpful tips including "plant a tree" and "go on a picnic":

Hi Marjorie! We partnered with to send voter registration documents and info to people in GA jails ahead of the runoff election. Almost everyone in jail — like those waiting to go on trial or convicted of a misdemeanor — can vote!

NEW: "If we intend to address how social inequalities and prejudices are shaped and reified through incarceration, the study of prison censorship--and how people in prisons and their support networks work to circumvent it--can offer lessons on resistance."
