Dominic Marak, an artist who is incarcerated in Wisconsin, painted this leaf with coffee (yes, coffee!) and gifted it to his penpal, a volunteer with Books to Prisoners. Dominic previously contributed artwork to us, and we always love a chance to share his innovative work!

for anyone wishing to make a last-minute donation for good, pls consider "Books to Prisoners" . Based in Seattle, they send free books to prisoners across the U.S. Many prison libraries have been closed all year due to covid, making the need even greater. Thank you.

If you are able, please consider making a year-end gift to a commissary fund. These funds directly supply money to incarcerated people to help maintain phone cards, buy hygiene supplies, get food, and more. These funds truly do so much.

It’s sad how much money the prison system makes off of incarcerated loved ones. My mom has to keep the phone calls to a minimum because I often can’t afford to keep putting money on her calls. We should not have to pay to speak to our incarcerated loved ones.

I received a Visa gift card as a thank-you from an organization I volunteer for, and wanted to pay it forward but had trouble finding wish lists that weren't hosted on Amazon. Then! I discovered you can order library books for incarcerated folks in WA:

Incarceration means the state takes full responsibility for the safety and health of people within its prisons. Through inactivity and neglect, the government of Washington is now responsible for infecting thousands of incarcerated people and staff with COVID. Unconscionable.

JLS Seasonal Joy Project: We woke up to pictures in our email. A picture from a home that was sponsored. We were able to sponsor over 80 children of people in prison around the US. Plus have letters/cards sent to over 300 people in prison. Thank you again

Our annual Holiday Postcard parties went virtual this year! This weekend, CR members & volunteers started writing thousands of messages of solidarity to our imprisoned comrades this holiday season, featuring beautiful art by artist Shannon Knox.

Collage of 4 images: the first is the largest, rectangular photo of a person in red, black and blue with long black hair and glasses wears a white surgical-style mask holds up a fan of the postcards in front of a building with murals. On the right, three smaller square images stacked on top of each other. The top image: 3 people pose with arms raised for the camera around a DJ table and astroturf underneath in the 4400 Telegraph backlot. The wall behind them has a multi-colored mural. The middle image: Outside of the 4400 Telegraph Building, a Black person with long red locs and a salmon-colored sweatshirt passes a white packet of postcard writing materials to a light-skinned person with curly hair, a green hoodie, and black striped shorts. Both are wearing colorful masks. The bottom image: A postcard laying flat on a rich blue background. It has a white border and orange background, with small muted color accents in green and yellow in the drawing; a black-and-white ink drawing.
