2018 Law Enforcement Related Deaths in Tennessee

The Tennessee Statistical Analysis Center recently published 2018 Law Enforcement Related Deaths in Tennessee. This report only contains information pertaining to deaths that occurred in the presence of law enforcement or deaths that occurred while in custody, such as in a local jail or prison for the year of 2018. Data in this study does not include occurrences where an officer fired his/her weapon in a situation which did not result in a death or when a subject sustained a serious bodily injury directly related to use of force by a law enforcement officer. Additionally, this study does not contain deaths that occur in nonresidential community-based programs run by jails, such as house arrest, work programs, community service, day reporting, or electronic monitoring.

2018 Public Safety Advisory Board Annual Report

The Iowa Statistical Analysis Center recently published 2018 Public Safety Advisory Board Annual Report. The purpose of the Public Safety Advisory Board (PSAB) is to provide the General Assembly with an analysis of current and proposed criminal code provisions. The mission of this Board is to provide research, evaluation, and data to the General Assembly to facilitate improvement in the criminal justice system that will enhance public safety, improve outcomes, and demonstrate the effective and efficient use of public resources.

Electronic Control Weapons in Massachusetts: 2017

The Massachusetts Statistical Analysis Center recently published Electronic Control Weapons in Massachusetts: 2017. This legislatively mandated report examines 2017 data submitted by Massachusetts law enforcement agencies with an approved electronic control weapons (ECW) training programs. Approved agencies are required to complete and submit semi-annual ECW reports on information related to 1) the number of sworn officers serving the agency; 2) the number of ECW trained officers serving the agency; 3) the number of ECWs owned by the agency; 4) the number of total incidents that occurred during the reporting period; 5) general details about each incident (e.g., warnings, deployments, submissions, etc.); and 6) demographic information about the subject.

Detroit Ceasefire Final Evaluation Report

The Michigan Statistical Analysis Center recently published Detroit Ceasefire Final Evaluation Report. Detroit Ceasefire has been a cornerstone of Detroit's violence reduction strategies. Ceasefire involves a focused deterrence model aimed at gang- and group- related violence. It involves direct communication of a deterrence message to high-risk individuals and groups, targeted enforcement and response to violent incidents, outreach and services, community partnerships and youth prevention. This report describes the planning, development, initial implementation, and full implementation of Ceasefire and places the initiative in the context of national trends. This is followed by evaluation results at both the community and individual levels.

FY 2017 Annual Report

The Florida Statistical Analysis Center recently published Breakdown of Burglary in Florida: a brief analysis of Burglary reported in Florida, 2007-2017. This Fact Sheet is based on data from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's Uniform Crime Report (UCR) system. This system provides standardized annual and semi-annual reports on crime statistics based on data gathered from across the state. Burglary is the unlawful entry into a building or other structure with the intent to commit a felony or theft. Between 2007 and 2017, there were 1,601,453 burglaries, of which 1,212,071 (75.7%) were residential.

Arizona Gang Threat Assessment 2018

The Arizona Statistical Analysis Center recently published Arizona Gang Threat Assessment 2018. This annual survey of Arizona law enforcement agencies examines their perceptions and experiences with gangs, gang members, and gang activity. This survey is modeled after the National Gang Threat Assessment and the National Youth Gang Survey, and was designed to gather information on gangs, gang members, gang activity, and law enforcement strategies for responding to gangs, in order to better understand the threat that gangs pose to Arizona's communities and public safety. The results are compared to similar data collected from 2008 to 2015.

SUMMARY: Report on the C.L.E.A.R. Act Community Law Enforcement Action Reporting Act

The Colorado Statistical Analysis Center recently published SUMMARY: Report on the C.L.E.A.R. Act Community Law Enforcement Action Reporting Act.The CLEAR Act mandates that the Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ) annually analyze and report data provided by law enforcement agencies, the Judicial Department, and the Adult Parole Board, to reflect decisions made at multiple points in the justice system process. The CLEAR Act requires that the data be analyzed by race/ethnicity and gender. This study presents information for calendar year 2017. This report presents a summary of the findings by collapsing the offense categories into four broad groups: Drugs, Other, Property and Violent crimes.

Monthly Indicators Reports-November

The Connecticut Statistical Analysis Center recently published Monthly Indicators Reports-November. The Monthly Indicators Report collects and publishes data from a variety of state criminal justice agencies. The primary goals of of the Report are to monitor trends in prison admissions and releases and to priovide policy makers and the public with a current look at the state's prison system and its prisoners. The Monthly is required by Public Act 05-249.

Sixteenth Annual DUI Report to the Utah Legislature

The Utah Statistical Analysis Center recently published Sixteenth Annual DUI Report to the Utah Legislature. This report includes data collected by the state courts to allow sentencing and enhancement decisions to be made in accordance with violations involving driving under the influence of alcohol and/or other drugs; data collected by the justice courts (same DUI related data elements collected by the state courts); and any measures for which data are available to evaluate the profile and impacts of DUI recidivism and to evaluate the DUI related processes of law enforcement, adjudication, sanctions, driver license control, and alcohol education, assessment, and treatment.

Co-occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders of Women in Prison

The Illinois Statistical Analysis Center recently published Co-occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders of Women in Prison: An Evaluation of the WestCare Foundation's Dual Diagnosis Program in Illinois. Co-occurring disorders (COD)—both substance use disorders (SUD) and mental health disorders (MHD)—affect many women incarcerated in prison. Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority (ICJIA) researchers conducted a process evaluation of the Dual Diagnosis treatment program operated by WestCare Foundation at Logan Correctional Center for women in Illinois. This report offers findings from that evaluation. Researchers specifically sought to learn how the program operated, about clients and their views on the program, and staff perceptions of the program.

The Tennessee Statistical Analysis Center recently published Tennessee Bureau of Investigation 2017-2018 Annual Report. This annual report details the activities of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) for the Fiscal Year 2017-2018. During this time the agency continued to work to streamline operations in an effort to increase efficiency and effectiveness. This report is intended to give the reader a better understanding of the TBI as an organization, along with our accomplishments and the importance of our employees' daily work in making the agency an essential part of Tennessee's judicial system.

2018 Police Management Study

The South Dakota Statistical Analysis Center recently published 2018 Police Management Study. In June 2018, the South Dakota Statistical Analysis Center (SAC) surveyed police departments in the state. A survey accompanied by instructions was emailed to all 69 police departments in South Dakota (this figure does not include tribal agencies). Fifty-nine departments returned surveys yielding a total response rate of 85%. Completed surveys were encoded and verified by the South Dakota Criminal Statistical Analysis Center staff. The results of this survey are intended to provide police chiefs with a valid means of comparing expenditures and resources of departments across the state. In addition, the results should provide the chiefs with a substantial basis from which to justify future managerial decisions.

Crime in Major Ohio Cities Q1 2018

The Ohio Statistical Analysis Center recently published Crime in Major Ohio Cities Q1 2018. These reports provide information about crimes occurring in major Ohio cities during the first quarter (January 1st – March 31st) and second quarter (April 1st – June 30th) of 2018. The cities included in this report are Akron, Canton, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, and Toledo. Data for this report were obtained from the Ohio Incident-Based Reporting System (OIBRS), which is a voluntary crime reporting program that enables Ohio law enforcement agencies to electronically submit crime statistics to state and federal government agencies. The data included in this report consist of the seven most severe offense categories collected by the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program. These offenses are known as Part 1 crimes and are divided into two categories: violent crimes (murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) and property crimes (burglary, larceny/theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson). Data from the first quarter of 2018 are compared to the first quarter of 2017 to provide context.

Task Force on Public Safety Preliminary Report to the Oregon Legislature

The Oregon Statistical Analysis Center recently published Task Force on Public Safety Preliminary Report to the Oregon Legislature. During the 2017 Regular Session, the Oregon Legislature reconvened the Task Force on Public Safety (Task Force) in House Bill (HB) 2238. The Task Force consists of 13 members, each appointed for two-year terms. Although HB 2238 was effective June 21, 2017, appointments were not completed until spring of 2018. Thus, this iteration of the Task Force did not begin its work until May 2018. HB 2238 directed the Task Force to engage in three endeavors. First, studying security release in Oregon, focusing on reducing racial and ethnic disparity in pretrial incarceration, including repealing statutes authorizing security release in favor of courts, or another entity with delegated authority, making release decisions; utilizing pretrial release risk assessments; and methods of reducing failure to appear at court hearings. Second, studying the impact of criminal fines and fees. Third, reviewing the implementation of the Justice Reinvestment Program.

Criminal Justice in Idaho: Performance Measures Fact Sheets

The Idaho Statistical Analysis Center recently published Criminal Justice in Idaho: Performance Measures Fact Sheets. The purpose of this project was to analyze data from multiple aspects of the criminal justice system to identify gaps and provide a more complete understanding of the criminal justice system in Idaho. In addition to developing a comprehensive data sharing platform on the Idaho Criminal Justice Commission's website (www.idjc.idaho.gov), researchers created the following fact sheets to provide a holistic view of the criminal justice system in an easily understandable and accessible format. Because this information is intended to inform policy and practice, an implications section is included at the end of the report with key findings and practical recommendations.

Crime in Delaware 2013-2017

The Delaware Statistical Analysis Center recently published Crime in Delaware 2013-2017. Crime in Delaware is the official report of serious crime known to Delaware law enforcement agencies. This report provides information about 24 Violent, Serious Property, Drug/Narcotic and Other Property and Social offenses reported in Delaware’s implementation of the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) operated by the State Bureau of Identification of the Delaware State Police. Data for the years 2013 through 2017 are included in this report. Also, as appropriate, data for the years 2006 through 2012 are added to illustrate long term trends. The report provides a summary of data on serious offenses, clearances, adult and juvenile arrests, and crimes against law enforcement officers at the state and county levels, followed by a detailed data section organized by state and county.

Ten-Year Estimate of Justice-Involved Individuals in the District of Columbia

The District of Columbia Statistical Analysis Center recently published Ten-Year Estimate of Justice-Involved Individuals in the District of Columbia. Nationwide, an estimated 20% of persons living in the United States have had brushes with the criminal justice system. There are various estimates of the number of justice-involved individuals residing in the District of Columbia (DC). Because continued questions have arisen regarding the number of individuals living in DC who are "justice-involved," this white paper is intended to better inform justice system stakeholders and the community as they develop policies, strategies, interventions, and services to help improve outcomes for justice-involved persons in DC. Having an up-to-date estimate of the number of persons involved in the justice system allows stakeholders to tailor their programs and services with a greater degree of specificity.
