mahmoud Ahmed & Ibex Band – Jeguol Naw Betwa
Mississippi Records 2011

On Mississippi Records we find this 2011 re-issue of
Mahmoud Ahmed’s Jeguol Naw Betwa, with the Ibex
Band. Originally released in 1978, wonderful Ethiopian
stuff for which I make this exception in posting new
material. Float away on these rare old tunes,
simply irresistible..

gewoonweg onweerstaanbaar..

P.S. label and back sleeve do not agree on track order,
I stuck with the label track order..

P.S. label en hoes van de plaat zijn het oneens over de
volgorde van de nummers, ik geloof het label..

01 – Jeguol naw betwa

T’zeta, Ethiopian Blues – Various Artists

Do you know that 1989 BBC double CD, ‘Under African Skies’?
When it first came to my ears I was blown away by one song specially.
It is the last track on the album but it made an incredible impression.
The voice of Bezawork Asfew is the most extraordinary, first time I heard
it, it sent shivers down my spine, spontaneous goosebumps, tears,
words can’t express how that felt, ever since I’ve been looking around to find
her music. All paths seem to lead to the CD this track comes from. If anyone
can help us to find something, anything she made, that would be super.
With the help of the great series on Buda Musique, ‘éthiopiques’, I made a
compilation of different versions of ‘T’zeta’ or ‘Tezeta’, a traditional
that practically all Ethiopian musicians seem to have played, listen.

After receiving all your tips, it seemed appropriate to post this fantastic
Youtube movie, thank you very very much for enlightening me !!!

tracks;

1 Bezawork Asfew – T’zeta
2 Mahmoud Ahmed – Tezeta
3 Mulatu Astatqe – Tezeta
4 Sèyfou Yohannès – Tezeta
5 Menelik Wèsnatchèw – Tezeta
6 Either/Orchestra – Soul Tezeta
7 Tèsfa-Maryam Kidané – Tezeta

Mahmoud Ahmed – Erè Mèla Mèla, Buda Musique

Mahmoud Ahmed, front

From Mali and Nigeria we go to Ethiopia, this music is unique
in it’s kind. Terms like ‘Melancholy blues’, ‘Brassy Danceable
Urban Jazz’, ‘Heart-wrenching’ are named but it remains hard to
give a proper discription of this sound. Anyway, it is very nice
and Mahmoud Ahmed is one of their Biggest artists, it was originally
issued in 1975 but this is a recent re-release, listen !

tracks;

1 Abbay mado – Embwa bèlèw
2 Atawurulegn léla
3 Tezeta
4 Ohoho gédama
5 Ebakesh tarèqign
6 Erè mèla mèla Mètché nèw
7 Sedètègnash nègn – Samerayé
8 Endénèsh gèdawo
