Email lists

CASI used to run three email lists, an announcement list, a discussion list and an analysis list .  All email lists are now no longer operating.  However, archives of emails on the analysis list and the discussion list remain.

The analysis list was a forum for discussion of the impact of policy upon the people and society of Iraq, and of the humanitarian implications of the foreign invasion of Iraq in particular. Any list member may have posted messages to the list, but all submissions required the list moderator's approval to ensure they were directly relevant to the above topics. Posting of news reports were not allowed but were sent to newsclippings@casi.org.uk for inclusion in daily news digests. A complete searchable archive of analysis list postings is kept online.

The discussion list carried typically two to eight messages per day. News reports, articles, etc. relating to sanctions on Iraq were posted to the list frequently by CASI and the list members. The list was, as its name suggests, open for anyone already on the list to post relevant messages to, or reply to previous messages on the list with queries or comments. The list membership consisted of around 250 individuals including journalists, academics, activists, politicians, students and NGO workers. A complete searchable archive of discussion list postings is kept online.

Details of the exact moderation policies and posting guidelines of the lists can be found below for reference purpouses.

Disclaimer

Opinions expressed on the list (even those posted by CASI members) may not be those of CASI itself. CASI disclaimed all responsibility for the content of messages posted to the list. It reserved the right to remove offensive or legally-dubious postings from the list archive.

Analysis List moderation policy and posting guidelines

The moderator will read all messages, and distribute suitable ones to the list. His or her decisions will be guided by the following principles:

Messages sent to the list should be directly relevant to the humanitarian implications of the foreign occupation of Iraq and to the impact of policy upon the people and society of Iraq. They should be concise, inoffensive, polite, and should make a new point rather than just reiterating previous posts. Posters should attempt to offer positive solutions as well as commenting on existing conditions.

If you are in any doubt as to the appropriateness of a particular message you are considering sending to the list, please seek advice from the list moderator on lists-manager@casi.org.uk before proceeding.

The decision of the moderator is final.

News items should never be sent to casi-analysis@lists.casi.org.uk. Instead, please send them to newsclippings@casi.org.uk. This submits the item for automatic inclusion in a daily digest of news items which in turn is distributed to all members of the analyis list.

Messages with attached files should never be sent to the list. The list server will enforce this policy by automatically stripping out any attachments before messages are distributed. Furthermore, HTML formatting will normally be automatically discarded. Both of these measures are in place to reduce the risk of transmitting viruses and to reduce the size of messages. We recommend that you configure your email program to send plain text (not HTML) emails. (In Outlook Express, this is done in Tools->Options->Sending).

When replying to specific points in someone else's email, it is common to quote a few lines of their original email to provide context to your comments. This can be useful practice, but please do not quote excessive quantities of text in this manner. People can always refer to the original message on the list archive.

Discussion List moderation policy and guidelines

It is our aim that anyone who is a member of the list can post freely to the discussion list. In the past we have had to restrict posts from one or two individuals who abused the list, or temporarily require all messages to be moderated during severe bouts of junk mail or technical problems. The list moderator reserves the right to enforce the guidelines on this page by moderating all posts if it becomes necessary.

People who are not on the list can post messages to it, but their messages will always require moderator approval (this is to reduce junk mail).

News items are usually sent to the list in a weekly digest created by a nominated list member (hereafter referred to as the news clipper). If you find a news item which you think is relevant but is not particularly urgent or important, please consider not sending it straight to the list, but instead sending it to newsclippings@casi.org.uk (an alias which will reach the person currently acting as the news clipper) so it can be considered for inclusion in the weekly news compilation. Note that due to time constraints the news clipper cannot guarantee to consider everything sent to them, so if your news item doesn't appear in the next news compilation, you may decide to go ahead and post it to the list yourself.

Messages with attached files should never be sent to the list. The list server will enforce this policy by stripping out any attachments before messages are distributed. There are several reasons for this policy, including the serious risk of transmitting viruses, the clogging up members' inboxes with huge messages, and the inaccessibility of attachments to many list members. Furthermore, messages which contain the same message text encoded both in plain text and in HTML will have the HTML part stripped before distribution. Again, this is to reduce the risk of transmitting viruses and to reduce the size of messages. We recommend that you configure your email program to only sent plain text (not HTML) emails. (In Outlook Express, this is in Tools->Options->Sending).

When replying to specific points in someone else's email, it is common to quote a few lines of their original email to provide context to your comments. This is useful practice in moderation, but please do not quote excessive quantities of text in this manner. People can always refer to the original message on the list archive.

List members who, in the list manager's opinion, send offensive messages, repeatedly send irrelevant messages, or fail to follow the list moderator's instructions, will have their automatic posting privileges removed so that all their future posts require the moderator's approval. We also reserve the right to remove offensive or legally-dubious postings from the list archive.
