Review

"Ann Dunwoody served her country for 37 years, inspiring countless soldiers and citizens along the way with her many firsts. As this book shows, her commitment to and zeal for service haven't ended with her military retirement."—Walter Isaacson, President & CEO of The Aspen Institute and author of The Innovators

"An amazing, uplifting story—and an important one for us to learn from. Ann Dunwoody was our first female four–star general, not because she was a great female soldier, but because she was simply a great soldier. She drove change—blazing a trail through myriad challenges—and did it with extraordinary wisdom courage, and a selfless commitment to soldiers. An inspirational guidebook for anyone trying to make their team or organization better."—General Stanley McChrystal (U.S. Army, Retired), author of My Share of the Task and Team of Teams

"General Dunwoody's book, A Higher Standard, provides inspiring military philosophy and on-the-ground leadership experience. There are powerful messages, and much to be learned from our United States Army's first female four-star general, who is a woman with a brilliant career on and off the battlefield. Challenge, change, and commitment flow from A Higher Standard! A must-read for all leaders in every sector."—Frances Hesselbein, President and CEO of The Frances Hesselbein Leadership Institute and 1998 Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipient

Inc.com, 4/13/15
“Dunwoody presents a list of leadership strategies that she learned during the course of her 37-year military career. These strategies work just as well in business and in life as they do in the U.S. Army.”

800-CEO-READ, 4/28/15
“A straight shooter who tells it like it is, [Dunwoody] is uniquely qualified to teach, inspire, empower and entertain readers of all ages.”

Bookviews blog, May 2015
“Filled with practical business advice.”

Internet Review of Books, 4/26/15
“Tells the story of a dedicated individual who strives and succeeds….I highly recommend this enjoyable and easy-to-read book to anyone interested in improving leadership skills or seeking encouragement to stretch toward a goal.”

Roanoke Times, 5/24/15
“This memoir chronicles not only the life of an extraordinary woman, but lays out a guideline for those who follow—either male or female, military or civilian. The rules she sets forth, learned and practiced through 38 years of unrelenting effort, though no guarantee of equal success, are surely a path to failure if their wisdom is brushed aside…In short, this book ought to be required reading for every basic leadership class.”

InfoDad, 5/28/15
“Ann Dunwoody became the first four-star female general in United States history when President George W. Bush nominated her to that rank in 2008. It was a remarkable accomplishment—just how remarkable becomes clear from A Higher Standard…There is plenty that is uplifting in her story. She stands for values that many now consider old-fashioned but without which there might never have been a United States, certainly not one as powerful as the nation is today…Dunwoody had a remarkable Army career, and a remarkably successful one; and her recounting of what she did and how she did it is engaging, involving and often fascinating.”

The Bookworm Sez (syndicated column), 7/27/15
“You’ll learn leadership tips from on and off the battlefield…You’ll find a wealth of advice perfectly fit for business…Dunwoody’s story is empowering and entertaining, and instructive to civilians unfamiliar with Army life…There’s enough biography here to satisfy readers of the genre, and anyone aspiring for leadership will find that as well…If you’re curious about the life of a history-maker, then put A Higher Standard at your service.”

More About the Author

In November of 2008, General Dunwoody became the first woman in military history to achieve the rank of four-star general. She had already been the first woman to command a battalion in the 82nd Airborne Division, and Fort Bragg's first female general officer in 2000.

General Dunwoody is the former commanding general of the U.S. Army Materiel Command, which is one of the largest commands in the Army with more than 69,000 employees and presence in all 50 states and 145 countries.

In 2005, Dunwoody became the Army's top-ranking female when she received the promotion to lieutenant general (three stars) and became the Army's deputy chief of staff, G-4 (logistics) at the Pentagon. During her more than 30 years as a quartermaster corps officer she led many organizations at home and abroad, commanding at every level.

Dunwoody deployed to Saudi Arabia for Operation Desert Shield/Operation Desert Storm in 1990. In 2001, as the 1st Corps support command commander, she deployed the logistics task force in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and stood up the Joint Logistics Command in Uzbekistan in support of the combined joint task force. Later, as commander of surface deployment and distribution command, she supported the largest deployment and redeployment of U.S. forces since WWII. She officially retired after 38 years of service in 2012.

Dunwoody has recently been appointed to the board of directors of L-3 Communications, which employs over 51,000 people worldwide. She is also on the board of LMI, a well-respected government consulting firm and Republic Services, Inc. She is a member of The Aspen Institute's Franklin Project Leadership Council. Her husband, Colonel Craig Brotchie, U.S. Air Force (ret.), sits on the Board of the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.

A straight shooter who tells it like it is, she is uniquely qualified to teach, inspire, empower and entertain readers of all ages through her tried and true "Leadership Truths."

When you read this book by a retired US Army General Officer you will feel encouraged about the quality of our armed services and its professional leadership. And when you read this book you will have grown to really like Ann Dunwoody. The book is about a very successful woman who does not shove gender in your face. And the book is full of honesty....a great deal of honesty. It tells of a woman who can give and take a punch and continue to rise again without a public whine.

The most import aspect of any good employee (and particularly leaders) is that they have desire and integrity while also remaining a constant learner. That is Ann Dunwoody. Read the Chapter on Courage (Ch5) It is very good. And the email written by General Dunwoody to her superior on page 109 is just plain great. I loved it. Wish I had written it myself. Also, later in the book, her clear views of diversity which highlight 'diversity of thought' are rarely publically championed by today's visible leaders.

General Dunwoody's core principles for leadership are well worth the investment in reading this book. A condensed group study guide might be practicable. Additionally, photo section would be a great add to a new edition if publisher would allow. At least one picture of some of the Iron Mountains would make this taxpayer smile.

As I was reading this book, I kept thinking of the other people I knew who would benefit from reading it. Young women joining the military would be the obvious -- but it has so much more to offer. This book really is for anyone who wants to be successful in whatever he/she wants to do. It is about being true to your own values and standards, having mentors, being a mentor, staying positive, dealing with negativity, working within a system without being afraid to challenge the status quo, team building, succession building, and most importantly, never forgetting who you are and what is most important to you. There are plenty of leadership strategies and life lessons to go around. Very worthwhile read.

Great leadership lessons that anyone can apply, brought to life through personal stories and experiences. I could readily identify with advances women in the military have made through Ann's career as I experienced many of those same issues myself. Her lessons apply as much in my civilian career as they did in my military career. Great read! Dr. Julie Crutchfield

Buy this book! You will be inspired and if you are like me, will want to share it with your children.
Gen.Dunwoody is open and honest, her book invites you into the personal life journey that resulted in her becoming our nations first Army four star general.
More importantly she shares what it takes to become a true leader, skills that all people will relate to and hopefully embrace.
Her sense of family, self discipline and personal responsibility impressed me.
Gen.Dunwoody's leadership skills would have allowed her to excel in many environments, the U. S. Army was lucky to have her join their ranks!
This book reads true and is really a story about building a life you would want to own.

Buy this book now! If you care about real leadership principles and learning about what it looks like when you apply them, look no further. This book isn't an autobiography of some General who loves to hear about herself, it is a solid leadership manual. Very few companies or organizations have formal leadership training that is worth anything. It seems for those not in the military, you have to seek leadership lessons from those that have lead in real world situations. This book delivers and does not disappoint. Glad to have it in the collection!

In the foreword to A Higher Standard, Sheryl Sandberg writes, “What distinguishes Ann is not that she’s a woman, but that she is a spectacular and inspiring leader.” I believe this sentence is an eloquent summary of the message of this book. Gen. Dunwoody inspires everyone – male or female, military or civilian – to hold him or herself to a higher standard. By poignantly sharing her challenges and accomplishments, both in her professional and personal lives, Gen. Dunwoody encourages both women and men to persevere in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles and blaze trails whenever possible. After all, Gen. Dunwoody had no precedent for a four-star female general when she first joined the military. But through hard work, determination, and compassion, she was able to make that ranking possible not just for herself but also for generations of military women who will follow in her footsteps. As I continue my own leadership journey, I know I will look to Gen. Dunwoody as an example of strong leadership and strive to hold myself to a higher standard as well. Thank you Gen. Dunwoody for this beautiful memoir!

Written by an Army four star, A Higher Standard deserves five stars. This is a book about real leadership, not theory, not concepts, but real person to person leadership that can be applied to any complex organization military or civilian. Leaders from all levels of should read it, subordinates and direct reports should read it. A Higher Standard is perfect for leadership training discussions. The story of Ann Dunwoody and her rise to the top of the Army and the military is a story about the leadership that she finds at all levels and ranks, especially in the NCO corps, and the lessons she learned. It is a story about ethics, it is a story about change in the culture of the country and the military. It is a story about family values. It is a wonderful story about a young girl that rises to become an example of a Higher Standard.
