Since the judicial-parliamentary coup that removed elected President Dilma Rousseff, of the Workers’ Party (PT), the new administration (led by her former Vice-President, Michel Temer) has advanced its agenda of neoliberal ‘reforms’. The economic crisis has continued unabated, and the campaign for the destruction of the PT has intensified, leading to the imprisonment of former President and PT founder Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.[1] Finally, the Armed Forces have increasingly intervened in political life, particularly through the occupation of peripheral areas in Rio de Janeiro. Their close articulation with the Judiciary is encapsulated in the appointment of General Fernando Azevedo e Silva as ‘advisor’ to the President of the Supreme Court, and in statements that would be scandalous in less turbulent times, such as the thinly-disguised demand for Lula’s incarceration issued by Army Commander General Eduardo Villas Boas. The co-ordinated shift of public institutions toward an exceptionally excluding variety of neoliberalism was challenged by attempts to rebuild the left through Lula’s campaign for the presidency and, in particular, through his convoy around the country in early 2018, which led to his steep rise in the opinion polls. ... read full story / add a comment southern africa / gender / non-anarchist press Saturday October 27, 2018 - 08:34 by Gauteng Community Health Care Forum On the 1-2 November 2018, at St George Hotel and Convention Centre in Pretoria, the summit will sign a vague and hollow declaration in support of the fight against gender-based violence, so that the government and the parties involved can pretend that it is supported by all sections of South African society, coming together to fight for women, LGBTIQ+ and children, when in reality the scourge of gender based violence will remain unchanged. ... read full story / add a comment international / anti-fascism / non-anarchist press Thursday October 25, 2018 - 18:22 by Mario Candeias It is the time of monsters. The organic crisis of the old neoliberal project has also brought forth the rise of a new radical right. Yet these monsters are quite different from one another: we have strong men like Trump, Kurz and Macron – political entrepreneurs shaping a new authoritarianism from positions of governance. Theresa May and Boris Johnson act quite similar, with less success, but unlike the others they are established representatives of authoritarian elite right-wing conservatism. They all share an anti-establishment discourse, although they have strong capital factions backing them. ... read full story / add a comment southern africa / workplace struggles / non-anarchist press Saturday September 29, 2018 - 07:27 by International Labour, Research & Information Group The International Labour, Research & Information Group (ILRIG) along with the forty-one (41) community, labour and other civil society organisations, gathered in Johannesburg for the 16th Annual Globalisation School, condemn in the strongest possible terms the violent repression of the legitimate protest engaged in today by casualised/contract workers at the Ekurhuleni Municipality. FOUSKAS and BULENT GOKAY Mainstream pundits and media commentators see the crisis in US-Turkey relations and the collapse of the Turkish currency as a result of Turkey's refusal to hand over to the US an American Evangelical priest. The analysis here shows that the roots of the conflict in times of crisis, uncertainty and hegemonic instability, go far beyond political epiphenomena. The US, a declining superpower, is trying to use the power of the dollar as a weapon to punish Turkey and other disobedient actors in the international system. The Sandinistas introduced a major programme of land redistribution and a significant expansion of public health care and education services. However, initial gains were undermined under the impact of an armed opposition (‘the contra’) organized and promoted by the U.S., a collapse of international raw material prices in the early 1980s, and Sandinista policy errors, including an over-ambitious programme of large-scale investments. ... read full story / add a comment greece / turkey / cyprus / anti-fascism / non-anarchist press Tuesday April 24, 2018 - 22:57 by Önder Kulak and Kansu Yıldırım After declaring a state of emergency in the country, the decree laws of the government have replaced the law and therefore the constitution (already suspended partially) in Turkey. ... read full story / add a comment mashriq / arabia / iraq / imperialismo / guerra / non-anarchist press Tuesday April 24, 2018 - 19:16 by Robert Fisk Traducido para Rebelión por Juan Antonio Julián. ... read full story / add a comment mashriq / arabia / iraq / imperialism / war / non-anarchist press Tuesday April 24, 2018 - 19:13 by Robert Fisk Exclusive: Robert Fisk visits the Syria clinic at the centre of a global crisis ... read full story / add a comment international / history of anarchism / other libertarian press Wednesday March 28, 2018 - 18:27 by KSL KSL: Bulletin of the Kate Sharpley Library No. 93-94, March 2018 has just been posted on our site.
