What is the Find Your Lawyer Referral Service?

Free enquiry interview

All law firms in the Find Your Lawyer Referral Service provide an interview free of charge.  You can use this interview to determine with the solicitor the nature of the legal issue, discuss the available options and request an estimate of costs to proceed with the matter. 

If you request the solicitor to undertake any legal work on your behalf (e.g. reading contracts, writing letters, etc.) the solicitor’s normal fees will apply.  Please be sure to discuss these costs before any work is completed on your behalf.

Online and telephone service

The online Find Your Lawyer Referral Service is available 24 hours a day.  When using the online service you must have access to a printer in order to print the referral letter.

The Find Your Lawyer Referral telephone service operates 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday. Please call 03 9607 9550.

Please note that the Find Your Lawyer Referral Service does not provide any legal advice.  This can only be gained by obtaining a referral letter to a member legal firm.

Referral letter

Users of the online Find Your Lawyer Referral Service can search, print a letter and then make an appointment with the selected firm for a free interview up to 30 minutes in length.

Users of the Find Your Lawyer Referral telephone service will receive a referral letter listing up to three firms practising in the relevant area of law.  You may then make an appointment with one of the firms for a free interview up to 30 minutes in length.

You must take the letter with you to the interview or forward the letter within three working days of the interview.

The Find Your Lawyer Referral Service will only provide one referral letter per legal matter.

What is a Collaborative Professional?

The Collaborative Professionals' Directory allows you to find an LIV member who is interested in finding solutions without going through the courts. Collaborative practice emphasises problem solving, negotiation and client empowerment.

In collaborative practice clients and lawyers agree in writing to reach settlement without court involvement. Collaborative practice has largely been used in family law matters, but is a process that can resolve a diverse range of disputes. For more information see the Collaborative Professionals Victoria website.

What is a Mediator?

The LIV Mediators Directory provides details of approved legal practitioners qualified to conduct mediations. Mediators are listed together with their contact details and areas of practice or specialisation.

Why choose a LIV Accredited Specialist

  • LIV Accredited Specialists must have a minimum of  five years full time practice experience and a minimum of three years experience in their area of specialisation
