The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP) is seeking an intern to provide research support during the Summer of 2018. Applicants should be highly motivated, energetic graduate or undergraduate students and recent graduates seeking an opportunity to make a difference in a progressive environment. Basic requirements for the position include solid research and writing skills, as well as an interest in learning about tax and fiscal policy. Some coursework in economics, as well as previous research experience, is a plus.

About the Position:

The intern’s primary responsibility will be to conduct substantive policy research. More specifically, the intern’s responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting research to be used in ITEP reports, testimony, and other publications.
  • Monitoring recent legislative proposals and current events in the areas of state and federal fiscal policy.
  • Writing about major developments and trends in state and federal tax policy for ITEP’s Just Taxes Blog.
  • Participating in staff meetings and activities.

The position can be full-time (40-hours per week) and is paid $15 per hour. The internship lasts approximately three months, and can be designed to work around the applicant’s academic schedule and travel plans.

The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy has an exciting opportunity for someone to join its team as a communication associate. Candidates should have demonstrated interest in nonprofit work, be a voracious consumer of news, and be willing to learn or already have a general understanding of how tax policy intersects with broader social and economic issues. The ideal candidate will have general knowledge of effective communications techniques and also have a creative, artistic side.

The primary responsibility for this position is helping ITEP visualize its data for a wide variety of audiences. Knowing how to use the Adobe creative suite to complete these tasks is a must. Secondary responsibilities include website and data base management. Candidates seeking a growth opportunity will excel in this position as, for the right candidate, the responsibilities could expand to helping manage/managing ITEP’s social media presence and learning to advise on communications best practices based on digital analytics.

Position summary: The communications associate will visualize our federal and state tax policy research in a variety of ways, including laying out fact sheets, briefs and reports and creating sophisticated charts and graphs. This will include using data within Excel files to create charts and graphs, and also creating infographics, memes and other collateral to be used across multiple platforms, including our websites, mass e-mails, social media and occasionally print. This position is ideal for candidates with one to five years of experience.

Primary

  • Design charts, tables, infographics, fact sheets, reports and other visual materials.
  • Layout ITEP reports and policy briefs.
  • Create memes, GIFS and other visuals that sharply and effectively convey messaging around ITEP’s work.
  • Branding. ITEP currently has branded templates that it uses for reports and graphs. The communications associate will assess whether these templates require updating and also determine the best software to create templates.

Secondary:

  • CRM management: The communications associate will assist ITEP’s deputy director as well as the communications director with managing various lists within our CRM, including ITEP’s donor database as well as its general email list and media lists.
  • Website: The communications associate will be one of several staff who posts content to ITEP’s website.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills:

  • The integrity of ITEP’s research is important. The communications associate must be a person who pays careful attention to detail, asks questions when necessary and delivers error-free products.
  • Proven experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Acrobat Pro, and/or other data visualization tools, such as Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Creative thinking and a demonstrated interest in or willingness to learn about state and federal tax policy and how it connects to broader social and economic issues.

Additional Skills:

  • Experience working with databases and websites.
  • Understand how to analyze metrics for websites, CRMs, and social media and make recommendations for improving outreach based on those metrics.
