Oslo (English pronunciation: /ˈɒzloʊ/, OZ-loh,Norwegian pronunciation: [ˈuʂˈlu] ( listen) or, rarer [ˈusˈlu] or [ˈuʂlu]) is the capital and the most populous city in Norway.
Oslo constitutes both a county and a municipality. Founded in the year 1040, and established as a "kaupstad" or trading place in 1048 by King Harald III, the city was elevated to a bishopric in 1070 and a capital under Haakon V around 1300. Personal unions with Denmark from 1397 to 1523 and again from 1536 to 1814 and with Sweden from 1814 to 1905 reduced its influence. After being destroyed by a fire in 1624, the city was moved closer to Akershus Fortress during the reign of King Christian IV and renamed Christiania in his honour. It was established as a municipality (formannskapsdistrikt) on 1 January 1838. Following a spelling reform, it was known as Kristiania from 1877 to 1925, at which time its original Norwegian name was restored.
Oslo is the economic and governmental centre of Norway. The city is also a hub of Norwegian trade, banking, industry and shipping. It is an important centre for maritime industries and maritime trade in Europe. The city is home to many companies within the maritime sector, some of which are among the world's largest shipping companies, shipbrokers and maritime insurance brokers. Oslo is a pilot city of the Council of Europe and the European Commission intercultural cities programme.
Aker Brygge is a popular area for shopping, dining, and entertainment in Oslo, Norway.
Aker Brygge is west of Pipervika, an arm of the Oslo Fjord, on the former ship yard of Akers Mekaniske Verksted, which was shut down in 1982. Before the shipyard was established there in 1854, the area was known as Holmen. It was an old yard where some industrial corporations established, and a suburban establishment grew in the early 19th century.
Aker Brygge is served by the Aker Brygge tram station.
The area contained shipyards and engineering industry - Aker Mekaniske Verksted AS - until 1982.
The construction of Aker Brygge was carried out in four steps by the realtors Aker Eiendom AS. A few old industrial buildings were demolished, while several of the major workshop halls were rebuilt as shopping areas. The first step of the construction was finished in 1986, with Telje, Torp and Aasen as architects. The fourth and final construction, the Storebrand insurance building facing Munkedamsveien, was completed in 1998. The area consists of a shopping center with shops and restaurants, a cinema, office space, and apartments. Additionally, there is a small boat harbour, and a terminal for the ferries to Nesodden. The area measures 260,000 m2.
Norway (i/ˈnɔːrweɪ/ NAWR-way; Norwegian: Norge (Bokmål) or Noreg (Nynorsk)), officially the Kingdom of Norway, is a sovereign and unitary monarchy whose territory comprises the western portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula plus the island Jan Mayen and the archipelago of Svalbard. The Antarctic Peter I Island and the sub-Antarctic Bouvet Island are dependent territories and thus not considered part of the Kingdom. Norway also lays claim to a section of Antarctica known as Queen Maud Land. Until 1814, the Kingdom included the Faroe Islands (since 1035), Greenland (1261), and Iceland (1262). It also included Shetland and Orkney until 1468.
Norway has a total area of 385,252 square kilometres (148,747 sq mi) and a population of 5,109,059 people (2014). The country shares a long eastern border with Sweden (1,619 km or 1,006 mi long). Norway is bordered by Finland and Russia to the north-east, and the Skagerrak Strait to the south, with Denmark on the other side. Norway has an extensive coastline, facing the North Atlantic Ocean and the Barents Sea.
Akershus Fortress (Norwegian: Akershus Festning) or Akershus Castle (Norwegian: Akershus slott) is a medieval castle that was built to protect Oslo, the capital of Norway. It has also been used as a prison.
It is not known exactly when the construction of the castle started but it is believed that it happened around the late 1290s, by King Haakon V, replacing Tønsberg as one of the two most important Norwegian castles of the period (the other being Båhus). It was constructed in response to the Norwegian nobleman, Earl Alv Erlingsson of Sarpsborg’s earlier attack on Oslo that occurred in 1287. In the aftermath of the attack, it became clear that the city’s existing defences weren’t effective and therefore, a stronger defensive centre was needed.
The castle is mentioned in written sources for the first time in 1300 in a letter from king Haakon to a church in Oslo. However, the letter does not mention how far the construction of the castle has progressed by then.

When two travelling Kiwis found themselves trapped among selfie sticks in an overcrowded city, Oslo came to the rescue. In Norway's capital they were served delicious food and wine, tried stand-up paddling on the Oslo Fjord, made use of Oslo's app-connected City Bikes, and last but not least, got to admire one of Munch's masterpieces completely undisturbed. So Marela and Sam's two days in Oslo were packed with experiences, but not with people. Marela and Sam went to Bar Brutus, Himkok, the café at Astrup Fearnley Museet, Godt Brød Grünerløkka, Astral, Vippa Oslo, the National Gallery, Ekebergparken Sculpture Park and Blå. They stayed in an AirBnB accommodation in Barcode, used city bikes from Oslo Bysykkel, tried SUP with Aksel Kolstad (bookable through the Lokalii app), and went to a So...

Top Sightseeing locations to visit in Oslo, Norway. Including Downtown Oslo, The Royal Castle, museums, Vigelandsparken, Holmenkollen, and more. The exact locations are listed at the end of the description. The Oslo Opera: Do this one! The opera building is adjacent to the central station, and it's awesome. It's architecture is like walking on an iceberg, and it overlooks the Oslo fjord and Akershus Castle. Doesn't take much time. Karl Johans gate: The main walking street that connects Central Station (Oslo S) with the Royal Castle. I guess it's a must when you come to Oslo. You can't avoid it, and you shouldn't! Because it's the main street of Oslo. But Karl Johan is mostly for the tourists, beggars, scammers. People that live in Oslo, like me, hardly ever go there. Royal Castle:...
Welcome to Oslo, the capital city of Norway. Centuries ago, Viking longships prowled the waters around Norway. Some of those longships survived the ensuing years and found their way to the Viking Ship Museum, which is a must-see on any Oslo tour. The three longships on display here have been recovered from various parts of the country, and the museum also contains a number of artifacts from the Viking Age. Norway’s rich connection to the sea did not stop with the Vikings, though; just over a mile away from the Viking Ship Museum are several other educational complexes dedicated to the salt water that flows through Oslo’s veins. Visit the Norwegian Maritime Museum, the Kon-Tiki Museum, and the Fram Museum to get a fuller idea of Oslo’s seaborne heritage. While in town, stop by the Nobel...

Spectacularly situated at the head of a 60-mile-long fjord, Oslo is Norway's biggest city yet it's easy to navigate with its compact historic core and great public transportation. Karl Johans Gate, the city's people-friendly main drag stretches from the train station to Royal Palace. Nearby, the harborfront hums with international shipping and a thriving cruise industry. Check out the best bars in Oslo's finest bar district. This is where Oslo locals go to drink, well away from the touristy bars in Karl Johans gate and downtown Oslo. Django is a jazz bar at the top of Grünerløkka, by Birkelunden park. They have live jazz performances Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday. The bands are regulars, but there are different ones on different days. Tea Lounge is a cozy bar by Birkelunden park. Cafe 33 is a famous dive bar in Thorvald Meyers gate, at the corner of Birkelunden. It has recently been refurbished and is now called Sport 33. It's a great place to watch the game, they even have a 92" plasma screen. After dark in the weekends, the big screens go off and it's back to the good ol' 33 again. This bar closes at 3 am. every day of the week. When the othe...

Although the Norwegian metropolis of Oslo is a modern city, it continues to be inspired by the lively spirit of its past traders, fighting men and seafarers. The unique capital city of the Vikings is full of both culture and sport, including a royal castle, various museums, ancient churches and world famous sporting events. It has 900 years of history. The conference rooms of the city's government are decorated with frescos and paintings by Munch, Krogh, Revold and Rolfsen and each year on the 10th of December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony takes place. West of the harbor basin is Aker Brygge, a city quarter that was created on the site of a former shipyard and which features some unusual architectur...

Sponsored by MyCall: Sightseeing in Oslo. 5 places I think you should experience if you travel to Norway or if you live here and haven't seen everything! Its a mix between tourist attractions and local places that I like. Hope you like it. Check out MyCall for more information: http://bit.ly/2dhaZnZ Hey all Norwegian learners! The language I'm teaching is not Bokmål nor Nynorsk. It's an east dialect and I don't think you will have much problem with bokmål after this. :) And everyone will understand this. I am Norwegian, from Norway. Born and raised. I live in Oslo, with my husband and son. --------------------------------------- I started filming with my webcam. Then i moved on to a Flip, then a Flip Mino HD. Then followed my iPhone, and Now I have a Panasonic HC-V210 :) I edit with V...
Fall in love with Oslo. Take an insider's ride outside the traditional tourist map - through a vibrant, happy, beautiful and very lush green city. (*** CHAPTER INDEX BELOW***). In this comprehensive video, you get to know new places, cool spots, hidden treasures, provocative art, posh neighborhoods, erotica, innovative farming, fishing culture, urban beaches, historical sites, how the Oslo bike service work and some SKAM related themes. Ronald, the guide, loves Oslo. He has put together an alternative route for anyone who wants to experience Oslo as a local - not as a tourist. Irl: the ride takes about 3 hours. It's a cheap trip. Most of what you experience is free. At our Facebook page (Yourway2Norway) - a map of the tour is provided :). Give us a like if you want (or a dislike). Map is...

Grünerløkka is one of the most interesting neighborhoods in Oslo, a hipster paradise a 10 minute walk from Central Station. Surprisingly few tourists visit Grünerløkka, and that's really a pity. Some of the nicest cafes and bars in Oslo are located in Grünerløkka, and it's a foodies paradise. The main street of Grünerløkka is Thorvald Meyers gate. Thorvald Meyers gate starts where Ankerbrua brigde crosses Akerselva river, and ends at Birkelunden park in the north. Tram lines 11, 12 and 13 have three stops along Thorvald Meyers gate. From south to north: Schous plass Olaf Ryes plass Birkelunden Most of the shops, bars, restaurants and cafes on Grünerløkka are located around the Birkelunden and Olaf Ryes plass parks, and in the segment of Thorvald Meyers gate that is connecting them. The...
Off the beaten path, but right at the center of Oslo is the river that divides Oslo into east and west. Akerselva starts at Maridalsvannet lake in the north of Oslo, and discharges into the Oslo Fjord, right behind the Oslo Opera. Despite being a much used green area by Oslo locals, not many tourists find their way to Akerselva. The area around the lowest parts of Akerselva is called Vaterland, and is right behind of Oslo Central Station. The Vaterland area isn’t particularly nice as there are some shady characters hanging around there, but it’s safe to walk there at daytime. Above Vaterland the river passes to the west of Grünerløkka. Around the two bridges Nybrua and Ankerbrua, there are a number of cafes, bars and restaurants. There are also some interesting houses along the river, li...
Welcome to Norway
Well shake it up and fizzle it out, call it what you will
There's nothing quite like getting out of your face to stop you felling ill...
But the next day you're out there and you're still stoned
Your only seeing policemen, you're feeling all alone
You need a dose of vitamins, you need some H2O
Concentration comes too fast and then it tends to go
And if you get all stoned again the whole thing just repeats
So pull it up and wake it up with arms and legs and feet
Then you get to be so knackered cos, you're doing this and that
You need to quit the madness, re-learn how to relax
By the time you've reached the point at which you've lost the will to rush
You'll be so relaxed that next day, you'll be doing twice as much!
So pour it down or cook it up, call it what you can
There's nothing quite like food and drink to stop you going mad
But the next day you're out there and you're still full
Of alcohol, cholesterol, wind and piss and drool
You need a pile of tablets, you need a place to sit
The time it takes to run around has shrunk and doesn't fit
Then gradually you lose the speeds
Of fast and slow and ideas feed
From work to play until the need
To set the gap has gone
So until then I think I'll spend
The week re-living the weekend
And vice-versa he's off again
Now where's that chorus gone?
Open it up or close it down but take it when you go
Cos there's nothing quite like going away to a place you hardly know
And having a session of mental regress - yes yes
I think we get the point... joint?! Pint?!
