A foundry is a factory that produces metal castings. Metals are cast into shapes by melting them into a liquid, pouring the metal in a mold, and removing the mold material or casting after the metal has solidified as it cools. The most common metals processed are aluminium and cast iron. However, other metals, such as bronze, brass, steel, magnesium, and zinc, are also used to produce castings in foundries. In this process, parts of desired shapes and sizes can be formed.
In metalworking, casting involves pouring liquid metal into a mold, which contains a hollow cavity of the desired shape, and then allowing it to cool and solidify. The solidified part is also known as a casting, which is ejected or broken out of the mold to complete the process. Casting is most often used for making complex shapes that would be difficult or uneconomical to make by other methods.
Melting is performed in a furnace. Virgin material, external scrap, internal scrap, and alloying elements are used to charge the furnace. Virgin material refers to commercially pure forms of the primary metal used to form a particular alloy. Alloying elements are either pure forms of an alloying element, like electrolytic nickel, or alloys of limited composition, such as ferroalloys or master alloys. External scrap is material from other forming processes such as punching, forging, or machining. Internal scrap consists of gates, risers, defective castings, and other extraneous metal oddments produced within the facility.
A metal (from Greek μέταλλον métallon, "mine, quarry, metal") is a material (an element, compound, or alloy) that is typically hard, opaque, shiny, and has good electrical and thermal conductivity. Metals are generally malleable — that is, they can be hammered or pressed permanently out of shape without breaking or cracking — as well as fusible (able to be fused or melted) and ductile (able to be drawn out into a thin wire). About 91 of the 118 elements in the periodic table are metals, the others are nonmetals or metalloids. Some elements appear in both metallic and non-metallic forms.
Astrophysicists use the term "metal" to collectively describe all elements other than hydrogen and helium. Thus, the metallicity of an object is the proportion of its matter made up of chemical elements other than hydrogen and helium.
Many elements and compounds that are not normally classified as metals become metallic under high pressures; these are formed as metallic allotropes of non-metals.

Greetings! On the last metal foundry video, i used the 'King of Random' Mini Metal Foundry to cast some copper and aluminum ingots. Then the foundry died. It crumpled into a shadow of the plaster and play-sand mix it once was. Now i'm rebuilding it using better materials that will last longer, stay hotter, and melt things faster! It uses materials available at the same home improvement store where i got the stuff for the first foundry. Better foundry is incoming, so stay tuned for even bigger and hotter melting action! Also i should probably cast something that isn't a muffin at some point... Follow me on twitter at https://twitter.com/VlogGarage Music: "Quirky Dog" by Kevin MacLeod. http://incompetech.com/

How to make a casting from making the sand mould to the finished item. The video has been edited to fit the 10 minute time limit of You tube. It takes much longer than this!
http://www.chinasavvy.com/industrial/sandcasting.php The sand casting process is used frequently by Chinasavvy in the production of many metal parts, Different materials, such as iron, steel, aluminum, bronze, etc can be sand cast. Aluminum sand casting is one of the most well known processes. High quality products using fine casting sand in the sand mold are possible. Chinasavvy, with its sand casting foundry, is a major sand casting manufacturer.

Tubalcain shows how to make sand mold using a pattern with an irregular parting line. This is part B of a two part video.
Here I make a stable, high temperature home metal foundry to work alongside my waste oil burner, for melting and recycling various metals for other projects. Using dedicated dense, castable Refractory mix that’s capable of withstanding temperatures up to 1700 degrees Celcius (3092 Fahrenheit). This home metal foundry makes use of recycled materials, is easy to build, very affordable, is strong and stable and can easily be customised to suit your needs. Most home made foundry designs use 50/50 sand and plaster of paris, but this mix is just too weak. It crumbles and disintegrates too easily and I got fed up of repairing mine. This dense refractory isn’t exactly concrete, but it’s MUCH harder than this 50/50 mix and should stand up to years of use, especially if supported in a firm containin...
