Japan (i/dʒəˈpæn/; Japanese: 日本 Nippon [nip̚põ̞ɴ] or Nihon [nihõ̞ɴ]; formally 日本国 Nippon-koku or Nihon-koku, "State of Japan") is an island country in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies to the east of the Sea of Japan, the East China Sea, China, North Korea, South Korea and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south. The kanji that make up Japan's name mean "sun origin", and Japan is often called the "Land of the Rising Sun".
Japan is a stratovolcanic archipelago of 6,852 islands. The four largest are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, which make up about ninety-seven percent of Japan's land area. Japan's population of 126 million is the world's tenth largest. Approximately 9.1 million people live in Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, which is the sixth largest city proper in the OECD. The Greater Tokyo Area, which includes Tokyo and several surrounding prefectures, is the world's largest metropolitan area with over 35 million residents and the world's largest urban agglomeration economy.

South China Morning Post came out with an article explaining that sea currents have changed slightly around Japan and this is driving the coldest temperatures in 50 years and record snow across the islands. Interestingly these changes are what is expected to occur during the new Mini Ice Age. More signs that we are repeating cycles. More volcanic eruptions, more sea ice coverage and more cosmic rays. The worlds media is now finding any excuse to explain the changes because these events are now in the open for all to see. The ring of fire is on alert after Japan was rocked by an earthquake. The 5.1 magnitude quake is just one more in the past week that’s made the area increasingly geologically unstable. The Japan earthquake struck 46 miles from the town of Miyako, which is home to more than 50,000 people. Morioka-shi, home to nearly 300,000 people, is 73 miles from the epicenter. It comes after a week of chaos in the region, with a volcanic eruption sparking a fatal avalanche in Japan earlier this week. And still one other fairly major earthquake which measured at a 6.2 magnitude struck off the coast of Honshu at a depth of 24 miles. Luckily, no damages or injuries were reported because of that earthquake. However, a volcanic eruption in the Philippines forced mass evacuations just recently, while anoth...

This dramatic video shows a tsunami wave smashing into the Japanese town of Miyako, in Iwate Prefecture. The wave crashes over the seawall carrying away everything in its path, including boats that topple over the wall and are smashed into a bridge. Cars were simply washed away, crashing into each other and buildings. More than 1,400 people were killed by the quake and resulting tsunamis and hundreds more were still missing, according to officials, but police in one of the worst-hit areas estimated the number of dead there alone could eventually top 10,000. Osaka's Gate Tower Building is an amazing sight to see because ... well, how should I put this? A highway goes through the building. It literally does, and there is a story behind it. In this episode, John not only goes inside to see where the elevator takes him, he also drives through it -- in a Lotus Seven. We'll also go up the Umeda Sky Building and catch some fantastic angles of the city, skyline and Gate Tower Building. THE STORY: Here it is from the building owner. It’s basically a land rights dispute with a sort of happy ending. The property was owned by a business (coal and wood company) since the early Meiji era but when business declined, so did the buildings in the 1970s. The area was approved to be redeveloped in 1983 but the property holder refused to give up the land, ...

Japan is hallowed ground for food obsessives the world over. But there's one style of Japanese cooking that turns traditional cuisine into high art. Inspired by the changing of the seasons and the beauty of nature, Kaiseki is the country's unique version of haute cuisine. At Brushstroke, chef Isao Yamada uses an ever-changing array of seasonal ingredients to tell stories from life in Japan. From slices of sashimi to charcoal-roasted eel, Brushtroke's kaiseki menu features food as metaphor and allegory. The coconut crab (Birgus latro) is a species of terrestrial hermit crab, also known as the robber crab or palm thief. It is the largest land-living arthropod in the world, and is probably at the upper size limit for terrestrial animals with exoskeletons in recent times, with a weight of up to 4.1 kg (9.0 lb). It can grow to up to 1 m (3 ft 3 in) in length from leg to leg. The large size of the coconut crab and the quality of its meat means that the coconut crab is extensively hunted and is very rare on islands with a human population. The coconut crab is eaten by Southeast Asians and Pacific Islanders and is considered a delicacy and an aphrodisiac. The pincers of the coconut crab are powerful enough to cause noticeable pain to a human; furthermore, the coconut crab will often keep its ...

In which John Green teaches you about what westerners call the middle ages and the lives of the aristocracy...in Japan. The Heian period in Japan lasted from 794CE to 1185CE, and it was an interesting time in Japan. Rather than being known for a thriving economy, or particularly interesting politics, the most important things to come out of the Heian period were largely cultural. There was a flourishing of art and literature in the period, and a lot of that culture was created by women. The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu was the classic piece of literature of the day, and it gave a detailed look into the way the Aristocrats of the Heian period lived. While this doesn't give a lot of insight into the lives of daily people, it can be very valuable, and the idea of approaching history from...

Episode 1822 - Japan : Tradition & Culture This week Dennis Wholey experiences the profound cultural depth of Japan. Segments focus on meditation in the mountain temples of Koyasan, traditional Washoku cuisine in Kyoto and Shinto beliefs at the Meiji Shrine in the heart of Tokyo.
Sentos are public bathhouses with a long and rich history in Japanese culture. Traditionally, tranquil, hand-painted murals adorned the walls of each sento. These murals, which often depict soothing blue water, pastel-green landscapes and Mount Fuji, are designed to lift bathers' spirits and relax their minds. Since the 1970s, however, sentos have become less popular and bathhouse muralists are less in demand. Yet Mizuki Tanaka—Japan's first female sento mural artist—is dedicated to revitalizing this craft and making Japan’s bathhouses a destination for all once more. Dr. Yasushi Sakuramoto, Maxwell School EMPA candidate Japan has realized the world’s highest level of life expectancy and healthcare standards through the universal health insurance system. This system includes covering all citizens through public health insurance, freedom of choice of medical institution, and high-quality medical services with low costs. While the social insurance system is the basis, public subsidies are the resources used to maintain universal health insurance. With the aging population of Japan, however, challenges such as financial sustainability, geographical inequity, and skewed distribution of physician specialties are being presented. Japan’s experience can provide perspective to other countries’ health policy creation. Dr. Yasushi Sakuramoto is an EMPA candi...

This week, past assumptions are brought back into the spotlight: discover arguably Japan's greatest food, witness English mixed with fitness and exercise to create a revolutionary educational solution and of course, learn a depressing statistic (if you live in the US/UK), albeit an unsurprising one - and witness a difference in opinion with regards to the wonders of Watanabe Ken. Want to lose weight? Free from sickness including cancer? Have full of energy? Look younger? You can achieve everything by using ancient Japanese super foods. We all know that Japanese life expectancy is said to be the longest of any country in the world. So it's probably no surprise that more and more Japanese restaurants are opening all over the world, especially in the more developed countries. What many people don't know however is this: ...The meals that you are eating at these Japanese restaurants are not the same meals that have given the Japanese their ability to live so long while staying healthy, slim and youthful. There is actually quite a bit more to it, and it's also easy to do! In this class, you will learn how to do it for real; you will learn about: • Ancient super Japa...

UK, Japan, Germany, Switzerland and Taiwan whose universal health care system spend much less than we do, but their outcomes are much better than ours.............What's in common? They all have Government run mandatory universal health care insurance and the health care insurance is a not-for-profit entity.

We need to talk about mental health. Considering that Japan is a country with a high suicide rate, it's a shame that mental health care remains relatively inaccessible to this day, with scant information about counselling, as well as the fact that the national health insurance does not cover it. For foreigners living in Japan, mental health care is even more challenging as choices are limited and practices are sometimes left unchecked. This video is about a terrible experience I had with an American counselor in Tokyo. It still baffles me how this person is allowed to practice to this day, given that his behavior is offensive and questionably legal. What I have said here only scratches the surface. If you google well enough, you will find several accounts of how this so-called counse...

Kyoto, Japan, has long been considered one of the country’s most beautiful cities. Once the capital of the nation, Kyoto is now an ultra-modern haven that retains a great deal of its ancient charm. To see some of this long-established glamour, make your way to Kyoto Tower. Just two miles east of the tower is Gion, an entertainment quarter and home to many of Kyoto’s famous geishas. As you walk east through Gion, you’ll find even more old architecture, including several Ryokan, or traditional Japanese inns. Many date back to the Edo period, which ranged from 1603 to 1868. During your Kyoto tour, take a rickshaw ride to the Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka districts, where cars are prohibited and traditional teahouses and temples adorn the nearby landscape. Kyoto is known as “The City of Ten Th...

From the Tokyo Tower one can see only skyscrapers, palaces made of concrete and glass, multi-level highway junctions and monorail expresses. But under the neon lights there are still rickshaw runners pulling their carts and geishas walking in their wooden shoes. The ornamented pagodas, the Japanese gardens, the calm Shintoist sanctuaries tell us about the age of shoguns and ninjas. The digital cameras and the swords of the samurais can be found at the same store. In the restaurants one can have sushi, sukiyaki and tempura sitting on a tatami, using chopsticks. Japan travel guide to what to do and eat in Miyajima, Hiroshima in a day! Hiroshima is near the bottom of the main island Honshu and a must visit when coming to Hiroshima is the island Itsukushima, more popularly known as Miyajima. It’s one of Japan’s top 3 scenic sights, most famous for its giant torii gate, which at high tide seems to float on the water. Miyajima island is also a great place for a day trip from the Kansai region like Kyoto and Osaka but I would recommend staying in Hiroshima for a few days to explore Hiroshima city and another day for Miyajima island. I started my trip off at Hiroshima station and took a 25 minute train ride to JR Miyajima-guchi station. From there it’s less than a 5 minute walk to the ferry terminal where you will take a 10 minute ferry ride to go t...

Japanese Wagyu Beef is considered some of the best steak in the world, and it’s no surprise you can find amazing cuts of beef at supermarkets in Tokyo. Rather than paying a ridiculous amount for a Wagyu steak, I got one at the supermarket and cooked it with my friend Jennifer, a chef from France. You don’t have to go broke to enjoy Japanese Wagyu in Japan. HOW MUCH IS WAGYU AT THE SUPERMARKET? About 200 grams cost between $15 - $25 depending on the A4 or A5 quality rank. Jingisukan (ジンギスカン, "Genghis Khan") is a Japanese grilled mutton dish. The dish is rumored to be so named because, in prewar Japan, lamb was widely cooked on a convex metal skillet or other grill. The dish is particularly popular on the northern island of Hokkaidō, in China and in Thailand. Mutton or Lamb was always the meat of choice among Mongolian soldiers, and the dome-shaped skillet is meant to represent the soldiers' helmets that they purportedly used to cook their food. In 1918, according to the plan by the Japanese government to increase the flock to one million sheep, five sheep farms were established in Japan. However, all of them were demolished except in Hokkaido. ---------- To enter the giveaway for your chance to WIN a Get Some Snack Pack, Comment on this video. Three Wi...

Finding Love In Japan - 101 East The path to true love is never easy but in Japan, finding 'the one' has never been harder. Only a third of the nation's youth have been in a relationship. Many consider a romantic partner bothersome in a country famous for maid cafes, herbivore men and pop idol shows. For the government, playing cupid is now in the national interest. As the country's population rapidly declines, it's funding matchmaking events to help encourage marriage - and babies. Such events are also being embraced by reality shows, small towns and even monks who need a partner for their temple to survive. 101 East asks, can love find a way in desperate and dateless Japan? Don't tell me not to live Just sit and putter Life's candy and the sun's a ball of butter Don't bring around a cloud 'round To rain on my parade
Don't tell me not to fly I've simply got to If someone takes a spill It's me not you Who told you you're allowed To rain on my parade
I'll march my band out And I'll beat my drum And if I'm spammed out Your turn at bat sir At least I didn't fake it Hat sir Nearly didn't make it
Maybe I'm just a rose of sheer perfection A freckle on the nose of life's complexion A cinder of a shiny apple of it's eye
I've gotta fly once I gotta try once Only can die once Right, sir? Love is juicy, juicy and I'll say I gotta have my bite, sir!
Well, look out love oh babe I'm coming Don't tell me not to march My heart's a drummer Who told you you're allowed To rain on my parade
I'm gonna live and live now Get what I want, I know how One roll for the whole shebang One throw that bell will go clang High on the target and wham One shot, one gunshot and bam!
Don't tell me not to live Just sit and putter Life's candy and the sun's a ball of butter Don't bring around a cloud To rain on my parade
