Uganda (/juːˈɡændə/ yew-GAN-də or /juːˈɡɑːndə/ yew-GAHN-də), officially the Republic of Uganda, is a landlocked country in East Africa. It is bordered to the east by Kenya, to the north by South Sudan, to the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to the southwest by Rwanda, and to the south by Tanzania. Uganda is the world's second most populous landlocked country after Ethiopia. The southern part of the country includes a substantial portion of Lake Victoria, shared with Kenya and Tanzania, situating the country in the African Great Lakes region. Uganda also lies within the Nile basin, and has a varied but generally a modified equatorial climate.
Uganda takes its name from the Buganda kingdom, which encompasses a large portion of the south of the country, including the capital Kampala. The people of Uganda were hunter-gatherers until 1,700 to 2,300 years ago, when Bantu-speaking populations migrated to the southern parts of the country.

In the last 20 years Uganda's economy has grown by an estimated seven percent year on year. Al Jazeera's Malcom Webb reports from Kampala.
2016 was a difficult year to do business in Uganda -- that's according to local traders in the capital, Kampala. Several companies have shut up shop and those who've managed to stay open say they're seeing little profit. As the New Year sets in, traders are rethinking business strategies for 2017. Michael Baleke reports

Business in the foreign exchange market has dipped further by more than half, with sector sources suggesting daily transactions now at average of $4M (Shs14.4B) down from approximately $10M (Shs36B) 18 months ago. The forex bureaux are blaming a huge reduction in foreign direct inflows, slow down in regional trade, as well as dwindling demand for international import requirements as some of the reasons for reduction in business. Slower business activities apart, the shut down of some bureaux including Crane forex bureau, is not helping the conditions in the market either, where money traders are reporting nearly 65% reduction in profit margin across traded unit currencies combined. Uganda’s nearly 270 registered forex bureaux are now having to deal with the running effects of wobbling ...
Uganda's top business leaders want the government to increase investment in agriculture to revitalize economic activity. According to the Bank of Uganda close to 70% of Uganda's population earn their livelihood from farming. But the Bank's state of economy report shows that the country's growth has been more erratic ranging from as high as 6.8% in 2010 to a low of 3.9 per cent in 2017. Uganda has allocated thousands of acres of free land to attract investors and boost economic growth. This comes at a time when the country is experiencing a financial squeeze, as the economy struggles to regain its footing. But, so far, not many businesses have responded to the offer, especially on the free land outside of the capital. CGTN's Hillary Ayesiga has that reports. Uganda's GDP will grow 5.5 percent in the year ending June 2018, boosted by higher oil sector investments and lower borrowing costs. A budget paper seen by Reuters stated that the issuance of crude production licenses would boost activity in the oil sector thus aiding growth. The land-locked east African country discovered crude reserves estimated at 6.5 billion barrels about a decade ago, in its western region near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. There are two things you notice when driving around Kampala. The first are the borda-bordas, motorcycle taxis which are definitely the quickest and easiest way to avoid a traffic jam. The second is the amount of banks. There are over 20 banks in Uganda to service a population of 30 million people. While these banks were not exposed to toxic sub-prime assets, the financial sector suffered a major shock when, like other open African economies, foreign investors pulled their money out during the height of the financial crisis.
Free Zones designated areas in which companies are taxed very lightly or not at all in order to encourage economic activity or these are areas setup for industrial purpose to produce goods specifically for export. The central bank is optimistic that Uganda’s economy will claw back in the next financial year as it moves to facilitate private sector growth. The Central Bank hope is premised on a reduction in the borrowing rate by one percent to 10 percent. Bank of Uganda governor Professor Emmanuel Mutebile says the massive investment in infrastructure projects and an increase in foreign direct investments will see the economy grow at 5 percent from 3.9.
Uganda is looking forward to 2017 as a year of strong economic growth. The country says negative sentiments and uncertainty dominated 2016. The election cycle also saw many investors develop cold feet but the Bank of Uganda says the economy is beginning to gain momentum. CGTN's Michael Baleke has that report.
here that what is happening in the banking sector, with Bank of Uganda taking over the management of some banks, should not be a cause for panic about the country’s economy. According to Byensi Lawrence, the acting executive director of Uganda Investments Authority, Uganda has got many banking options that can provide financial services to any investor who needs such services. To him, any business has got its good and bad times, all of which must be treated accordingly.

Living in a poor country with one of the worst doctor-patient ratios in the world - about one for every 24,000 people - it's perhaps no surprise that many Ugandans are tempted by alternative remedies, even though there's often little evidence to support the claims made about their efficacy in treating or preventing disease. But the phenomenon does beg many questions, not least of which are who is really benefiting from the sale of these products and how exactly are they marketed? We'd heard reports about one particularly controversial business, a complex multi-level marketing scheme run in Uganda under the aegis of a Chinese company called Tiens, which produces food supplements. Its products, we'd been told, were being inappropriately sold as medications - in some cases for very serious ...
As the country moves towards ensuring access to affordable health for all, the number of Ugandans ailing with surgically treatable disease continue to worry health workers. Speaking to NBS TV, Makerere University Centre for Health and Population Research-MUCHAP Executive Director Dr Dan Mujjungu many of such cases can only be identified and worked on, at organized health camps as many of the patients can not even meet the cost of treatment.
In Ugandas state hospitals and clinics, the government provides free treatment and medicine — but supplies of both doctors and drugs are short. Hospitals receive some help from volunteer organizations like Doctors Without Borders that provide medical staff, but low salaries and long hours deter many Ugandan doctors from service. Worldfocus special correspondent Martin Seemungal travels to a small hospital in northern Uganda where patients come by the hundreds and wait for hours to receive treatment from a handful of dedicated caregivers. The Ugandan health system, like other systems, aims to achieve, promote and sustain good health for its people. The health system has been evolving over the last 3 to 4 decades to handle emerging concerns and challenges to the health situation in the country. According to international health indicators, healthcare in Uganda is becoming more accessible and robustly a public donor-private interlinked sector. 2009. 6m33s. English with English Subtitles. In rural parts of Uganda, health care experts rarely have access to the kinds of documentation that their colleagues in the developed world may have - medical journals, reference materials, and always on connectivity are often not available. To address this, UHIN has developed a low cost means of transmitting this information to healthcare workers in rural Uganda by using PDAs and existing cellular telephony networks. http://ntvuganda.co.ug/ Tourism is almost a one billion dollar industry in Uganda. There are regions taking a lion's share in the industry. They include areas near Murchison falls National Park in the north, Kidepo in the north east and the Mugahinga in the south. Fort Portal in the Rwenzori region has a lot to offer and both local and foreign tourists have been streaming to this small town.
We worked with a production company from France to produce this video for the Mara Group, Uganda.

New Count-terrorism team training and graduation UGANDA
Battle group 17 of 2,777 Uganda peoples Defense Forces soldiers was flagged off at the Peace Support Operations – Training centre (PSO-TC) Singo to replace the 14 battle group in Somalia. While sending off these Soldiers the chief of defense forces Gen. Katumba Wamala cautioned the troops to maintain discipline while on the mission. The laxity on detail in Somali has endangered the previous calm and restoration of peace. Al-shabaab has heightened successful sporadic attacks on UPDF camps that on many occasions have been caught napping. The brief die out of the sound of the gun had prompted the UPDF to lower their barrels, only for the Al-shabaab to respond. The Gen. says the unending war in Somalia is as result of Al-shabaab mindset that do not value life, and have nothing to lose, unlik...
Uganda's military has branded the Janaale attack, that left at least 12 Ugandan soldiers dead, a game-changer. It says that its forces will provide a decisive response. But Al Shabab has shown time and time again it can change the game at will particularly when it looks to be losing. CCTV's Robert Nagila reports.
Greatest Hostage Rescue operation in the History: Operation Thunderbolt : Entebbe Airport..Uganda Operation Entebbe was a counter-terrorist hostage-rescue mission carried out by commandos of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) at Entebbe Airport in Uganda on 4 July 1976. A week earlier, on 27 June, an Air France plane with 248 passengers was hijacked, by members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the German Revolutionary Cells, and flown to Entebbe, the main airport of Uganda. The local government supported the hijackers and dictator Idi Amin personally welcomed them. Kenyan sources supported Israel and in the aftermath of the operation Idi Amin issued orders to retaliate and slaughter several hundreds of Kenyans present in Uganda. The hijackers separated the Israelis and...
Washington is to send a hundred special operations troops to Uganda to help local forces fight the Lord's Resistance Army, widely considered a terrorist organization. The Ugandan government has been fighting this guerilla group for over two decades. But Asia Times correspondent Pepe Escobar says America has far-reaching plans for the region, that have little to do with protecting civilians. The Chief of Defense Forces Gen. Katumba Wamala warns of a spillover effect of the ongoing Kenya attacks, urging Ugandans to remain vigilant and intelligence agencies to step up security measures. The CDF fears that Uganda has so many Somali nationals and terrorists could use that chance to wreak havoc in Uganda especially during this coming festive season. This was at Mbuya where the UPDF promoted and retired senior army officers.
English/Nat A shadowy rebel group has brought a reign of terror to northern Uganda. The Lord's Resistance Army is accused of butchering hundreds of civilians in its war to topple the Ugandan government. APTV visited the northern town of Gulu, in the heart of rebel territory, where the local population is subjected to constant rebel attacks. Thousands of soldiers garrisoned in and around Gulu have failed to deter rebel attacks by the Lord's Resistance Army or L-R-A. Government troops comb towns and countryside for the shadowy rebel organisation that's brought mayhem to northern Uganda for almost a decade. Some doubt the army -- or Ugandan People's Defence Force, as it's know here -- will ever ben able to defeat the L-R-A. The Ugandan army says the rebels are gener...

This week, Uganda will mark the third anniversary of one of the deadliest terror attacks in Africa - the 2010 World Cup bombings. More than 80 people were killed in twin bomb attacks in Kampala, claimed by Somali rebel group Al-Shabaab. The group cited Uganda's deployment of troops in Somalia and threatened more attacks to come. Yet since then, there've been no further attacks. So how did Uganda manage to neutralize the threat? CCTV's Isabel Nakirya has this report.

The Uganda Peoples Defense Force, or U-P-D-F, supplies the majority of soldiers to the African Union Mission in Somalia, or Amisom, which is combating Al Shabaab, an Al-Qaida linked group, operating in East Africa. Uganda's elite special forces team helped drive terrorists Al Shabaab out of Somalia. Now the soldiers are posted at "Kilometre 50", North West of the capital, where they continue to hunt down and fight insurgents. eNCA East Africa Bureau Chief, Robyn Kriel, filed this exclusive story. The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in Uganda have regularly abducted children and then trained them as fighters or used them as sex slaves. These abducted children often spend several years in the bush as captives of rebels, pursued by government troops. Many of the children do not survive the ordeal. Those children who manage to escape are severely traumatized and sometimes not welcomed back by their families. Most of the girls return as mothers after having been repeatedly raped - but their children are likewise rejected by the families. Filmmaker Jörg Brase met a number of these "children of terror” and tells some of their stories. Evelyn Amony and Victoria Nyanyjura were among the underage victims. At the age of 11 Evelyn was kidnapped by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) on her way to...
The risk involved was extraordinary... The timing had to be impeccable and the entire rescue operation rested on achieving the element of surprise. When Israeli citizens were held hostage by terrorists at Entebbe Airport in Uganda in late June 1976, Israeli commandos and soldiers embarked on one of the most daring and dangerous rescue operations ever in order to save them. See how Israel pulled off this seemingly impossible stunt in the video below.
As the world intensifies the fight against the global threat of terrorism the Uganda police has is not left out in the fight, the force has intensified vigilance as more officers from different departments are trained in counter terrorism courses. AJAY JAIN Do you like the thought of visiting Africa? And Uganda in specific? I have noticed some people looking a bit unsure at the prospect of going to Uganda - after all, we don’t come across too many who have been to the country. But those of us who have - including yours truly - can never stop talking about it. Uganda is clearly a traveller’s delight - and safer than many other places on the planet. While you think about a trip to the country, here are a few tips for you. 1. GETTING THERE Not too many airlines serve the country - and you may have to hop a few airports to get there. The country does not have a national carrier - but the likes of Ethiopian, Kenya and Etihad will get you there. 2. VISA Uganda introduced e-visas in June 2016 but the system was not functioning efficient...
