Aarti

Aarti also spelled arti, arati, arathi, aarthi (In Hindi: आरती ārtī) is a Hindu religious ritual of worship, a part of puja, in which light from wicks soaked in ghee(purified butter) or camphor is offered to one or more deities. Aartis also refer to the songs sung in praise of the deity, when lamps are being offered.

Origin

Aarti is derived from the Sanskrit word ārātrika (आरात्रिक), which means something that removes rātrī, darkness (or light waved in darkness before an icon). Another word from which Aarti is thought to be derived is the Sanskrit word Aaraartikyam (Sanskrit: आरार्तिक्यं). A Marathi language reference says it is also known as Mahaneeranjana (Sanskrit: महानीराञ्जना)

Aarti is said to have descended from the Vedic concept of fire rituals, or homa. In the traditional aarti ceremony, the flower represents the earth (solidity), the water and accompanying handkerchief correspond with the water element (liquidity), the lamp or candle represents the fire component (heat), the peacock fan conveys the precious quality of air (movement), and the yak-tail fan represents the subtle form of ether (space). The incense represents a purified state of mind, and one’s "intelligence" is offered through the adherence to rules of timing and order of offerings. Thus, one’s entire existence and all facets of material creation are symbolically offered to the Lord via the aarti ceremony. The word may also refer to the traditional Hindu devotional song that is sung during the ritual.

Music director

A music director may be the director of an orchestra or concert band, the director of music for a film, the director of music at a radio station, the head of the music department in a school, the coordinator of the musical ensembles in a university, college, or institution (but not usually the head of the academic music department), the head bandmaster of a military band, the head organist and choirmaster of a church, or an Organist and Master of the Choristers (a title given to a Director of Music at a cathedral, particularly in England).

Orchestra

The title of "music director" or "musical director" is used by many symphony orchestras to designate the primary conductor and artistic leader of the orchestra. The term "music director" is most common for orchestras in the United States. With European orchestras, the titles of "principal conductor" or "chief conductor" are more common, which designate the conductor who directs the majority of a given orchestra's concerts in a season. In musical theatre and opera, the music director is in charge of the overall musical performance, including ensuring that the cast knows the music thoroughly, supervising the musical interpretation of the performers and pit orchestra, and conducting the orchestra.

Jai Jagdish Hare

Om Jai Jagdish Hare (Hindi: ॐ जय जगदीश हरे) is a Hindu religious song for the deity Vishnu, composed c. 1870 by Shardha Ram Phillauri. Although the song is a Hindi language composition, it is widely sung by many Hindus within the Indian Diaspora, regardless of their native language. The prayer is sung by the entire congregation at the time of Aarti, a form of Hindu worship.

History

It may have been inspired by the Dashavatara (दशावतार कीर्ति धवलम्) section of Gita Govinda of Jayadeva, a lyrical composition of 12th century, which has the same refrain:

प्रलयपयोधिजले धृतवानसि वेदम् ॥
विहितवहित्रचरित्रमखेदम्॥
केशवाधृतमीनशरीर जयजगदीशहरे॥

There are also variants of the song, using the same tune and structure, but with focus on different deities. These include Om Jai Lakshmi Mata, Om Jai Shiva Omkara and Om Jai Shiva Shakti Hare.

Early Life

He was born and brought up in Howrah. His family had close links with art circles, in particular in drama, literature, and music. He was a graduate of the Scottish Church College, in Calcutta. [ 1 ]

Career

He experimented with various genres and in the process contributed richly to the evolution of musical compositions in Bengali cinema during the 1960s and 1970s. [ 3 ]The sheer spontaneity of his compositions made him a much sought after lyricist. Famous Bengali and Bollywoodartistes like Hemanta Mukherjee, Manna Dey, Geeta Dutt, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Haimanti Shukla, Shyamal Mitra, Bhupen Hazarika, Pratima Bandyopadhyay and Arati Mukherjeesang his compositions. [ 1 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ]In 1966 film Sankhabela, he wrote two evergreen songs- "Ke Prothom Kachhe Esechho" (Lata Mageshkar and Manna Dey) and Aaj Mon Cheyeche" (Lata Mangeshkar). In 1969 film Prothom Kadam Phool, he wrote " Ami Shri Shri Bhojo Hori Manna".

Arati is a ceremony of light performed at the end of satsang (see http://www.sivananda.eu/en/meditation/satsang.html). It is a ritual which probably originated in the ancient Vedic scriptures of India. Yoga masters advise rituals such as Arati for the purposes of worship and inner purification. During Arati, lights are waved before the different representations of the Divine while mantras are chanted according to various traditions. The Divine is light itself. Camphor is sometimes used during this ceremony, which has a symbolic significance; the light of camphor (which melts as it burns) denotes that the individual ego should melt like camphor, and the Jivatman (individual soul) becomes one with the supreme Light of Lights.

Madhu decides to avenge this humiliation by putting Rajiv's daughter, Raksha, under a black magic spell. The family calls in Dr. Pandey - who does not find anything physically wrong with her but hastily changes his mind after re-examining her at their residence, and calls in Psychiatrist Seema Walke. Arati and her mother-in-law are convinced that Raksha is possessed and call in a Tantri, but Rajiv decides to admit her in a hospital under the care of the aforementioned doctors. He will soon regret this decision after a series of accidents at his building site, and be compelled to seek the assistance of an exorcist when he finds Raksha's life threatened by inexplicable forces.
