Copts

The Copts are an ethno-religious group situated in North Africa and the Middle East, mainly in the area of modern Egypt, where they are the largest Christian denomination. They are also the largest Christian denomination in Sudan and Libya. Christianity was the religion of the vast majority of Egyptians from 400–800 A.D. and the majority after the Muslim conquest until the mid-10th century and remains the faith of a significant minority population. Historically they spoke the Coptic language, a direct descendant of the Demotic Egyptian spoken in the Roman era, but it has been near-extinct and mostly limited to liturgical use since the 18th century. They now speak Arabic.

Copts in Egypt constitute the largest Christian community in the Middle East, as well as the largest ethno-religious minority in the region, accounting for an estimated 10% of the Egyptian population.Copts in Sudan constitute the largest Christian community in Sudan, accounting for an estimated 1% of the Sudanese population.Copts in Libya constitute the largest Christian community in Libya, accounting for an estimated 1% of the Libyan population. Most Copts adhere to the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria. The Coptic Catholic Church, which is an Eastern Catholic church in full communion with the Catholic Church, claims 163,000 members.

    Egypt

Egypt (i/ˈɪpt/; Arabic: مِصر Miṣr, Egyptian Arabic: مَصر Maṣr, Coptic: Ⲭⲏⲙⲓ Khemi), officially the Arab Republic of Egypt, is a transcontinental country spanning the northeast corner of Africa and southwest corner of Asia, via a land bridge formed by the Sinai Peninsula. It is the world's only contiguous Eurafrasian nation. Most of Egypt's territory of 1,010,408 square kilometres (390,000 sq mi) lies within the Nile Valley. Egypt is a Mediterranean country. It is bordered by the Gaza Strip and Israel to the northeast, the Gulf of Aqaba to the east, the Red Sea to the east and south, Sudan to the south and Libya to the west.

Egypt has one of the longest histories of any modern country, arising in the tenth millennium BC as one of the world's first nation states. Considered a cradle of civilisation, Ancient Egypt experienced some of the earliest developments of writing, agriculture, urbanisation, organised religion and central government. Iconic monuments such as the Giza Necropolis and its Great Sphinx, as well the ruins of Memphis, Thebes, Karnak, and the Valley of the Kings, reflect this legacy and remain a significant focus of archaeological study and popular interest worldwide. Egypt's rich cultural heritage is an integral part of its national identity, having endured, and at times assimilated, various foreign influences, including Greek, Persian, Roman, Arab, Ottoman, and European. Although Christianised in the first century of the Common Era, it was subsequently Islamised due to the Islamic conquests of the seventh century.

    Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria

The Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria is the largest Christian Church in Egypt, and also the largest in the Middle East overall.

According to tradition, the Church was established by Saint Mark, an apostle and evangelist, in the middle of the 1st century (approximately AD 42). The head of the Church and the See of Alexandria is the Patriarch of Alexandria on the Holy See of Saint Mark, who also carries the title of Coptic Pope. The See of Alexandria is titular, and today the Coptic Pope presides from Saint Mark's Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in the Abbassia District in Cairo.

The Coptic Orthodox Church belongs to the Oriental Orthodox family of Churches, which has been a distinct Christian body since the schism following the Council of Chalcedon in AD 451, when it took a different position over Christology from that of the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church. The precise Christological differences that caused the split with the Coptic Christians are still disputed, highly technical, and mainly concerned with the nature of Christ. The foundational roots of the Coptic Church are based in Egypt, but it has a worldwide following.

    Middle East

The Middle East (also called the Mid East) is a transcontinental region centered on Western Asia and Egypt. The corresponding adjective is Middle-Eastern and the derived noun is Middle-Easterner. Formerly, the Eurocentric synonym Near East (as opposed to Far East) was commonly used. Arabs, Azeris, Kurds, Persians, and Turks constitute the largest ethnic groups in the region by population, while Armenians, Assyrians, Circassians, Copts, Druze, Jews, Maronites, Somalis, and other ethnic and ethno-religious groups form significant minorities.

The History of the Middle East dates back to ancient times, with the (geo-political) importance of the region being recognized for millennia. Several major religions have their origins in the Middle East, including Judaism, Christianity, and Islam; the Baha'i faith, Mandaeism, Unitarian Druze, and numerous other belief systems were also established within the region. The Middle East generally has a hot, arid climate, with several major rivers providing irrigation to support agriculture in limited areas such as the Nile Delta in Egypt, the Tigris and Euphrates watersheds of Mesopotamia, and most of what is known as the Fertile Crescent. Most of the countries that border the Persian Gulf have vast reserves of crude oil, with the dictatorships of the Arabian Peninsula in particular benefiting from petroleum exports. In modern times the Middle East remains a strategically, economically, politically, culturally and religiously sensitive region.

The word Copt is an english word taken from the Arabic word Gypt, which literally means Egyptian. However, in contemporary usage, Coptic refers to Egyptian Christians. Today, Copts form almost 13 to 15% of Egypt's population, even though they are not ethnically distinct from other Egyptians as they are fully integrated into the body of the Modern Egyptian Nation. In 451 CE, Anatolius, the Patriarch of Constantinople, convened the council of Chalcedon in an attempt to settle theological controversy about the nature of Jesus Christ. The council affirmed that Jesus was “fully human and fully divine”, two natures united in one person. Not all agreed, with the “oriental orthodox” bishops believing instead that Jesus is of one nature; one nature consisting of humanity and divinity. The differ...

But we're going to begin our story before the onset of these horrors -- with a Coptic rite we witnessed, one of the most unusual events in all Christianity. "Like the Greeks and the Russians, Copts are Orthodox Christians, but they have one thing in common with the Roman Catholics: they elect a pope. "And in Egypt, it's a public ceremony. It all happens in Cairo's grand cathedral. This was the first papal election in 41 years and Copts from all over Egypt had come for what was likely to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. "It's the last step in a process that has narrowed the candidates for pope down to three. But the final choice is made by a boy who is blindfolded and led to a crystal chalice containing the three names. The name on the piece of paper the boy picks becomes the next pope of Coptic Christians. They believe his choice is not a roll of the dice, but is inspired by the divine."

In this 2016 documentary, the history of the Coptic faith in Egypt is being told. We´re not only shown the artefacts of the Coptic Museum in Cairo, but the entire history of the rise of Christian belief in a country where for thousands of years, ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses had been revered. Today it´s often forgotten that before the arrival of Islam in the 7th century, many Middle Eastern countries were part of the (East)Roman empire and had a predominantly Christian population. I put these beautiful images of Coptic chapels, churches, monasteries, statues and paintings on the internet in the year 2016, hoping that in 10 years from now, they´ll still be standing safely and untouched in Egypt. It is a breathtakingly beautiful country, and the only country in the world where visitors can marvel at ancient Egyptian monuments, archaic Christian churches and elegant mosques at the same time. Let´s hope that just like the stone monuments of different religions, the people in Egypt will also be able to live together peacefully for the coming centuries! By the way: there are almost no Jewish monuments left over in Egypt anymore. In Cairo and Alexandria, two synagogues are still standing. The one in Alexandria has not been used for 30 years. It is guarded by police and can only be visited by Jews and Non-Egyptians(!). Today, the Jewish community in Alexandria consists of 8 women and 2 men, the youngest one is 60 years old. In Cairo, the community consists of 12 persons. All over Egypt, an estimated number of 100 Jews are living, down from around 80,000 in 1948. – Let´s hope that the future of today´s around 5 to 8 million Copts in Egypt (around 10%) looks brighter than the one of Egypt´s Jewish population. Note: the voice-over by “Saint Anianus“ is not based on original texts. (It wouldn´t be logic that he talks about his own funeral...) No copyright infringed intented. I do not own anything in the video, everything belongs to its respective owners.

Translation of song: Chorus: "Exalt the name of Christ, lift His name up with your songs, call the heroes, His heroes, to walk ahead of you with the cross" ; Say He is risen and death has no power, and there is no forgiveness except through His blood; and the Light of the Gospel is greater; Say he conquered darkness and its power; He brightened our days; and the light of day is greater; Say He conquered His enemies; we conquered by witnessing to Him and by His blood; and our inheritance with Him is greater; live the joy of heaven, as Satan dons the clothes of grief; and our praises are greater Credit goes to Sat7Arabic for providing this video

Around 10 percent of Egypt's population belong to the Coptic faith, making them the largest Christian minority in the Middle East. But they have become targets of violence since the revolution three years ago. With elections scheduled for May and the struggle between the Egyptian military and Islamists continuing, many Copts abroad are deeply worried about the future of their ancient church. VOA religion correspondent Jerome Socolovsky visited a Coptic church outside Washington DC.

Muslim Mob Attacks Copts in a Beni Suef Village in Egypt following Rumor about Church Construction A video, which was posted on YouTube on July 22 and and which circulated on social media, shows a Muslim mob throwing stones at families in the village of Saft Al-Kharsa in the Beni Suef governorate. The video was shot from the balcony of one of the Coptic families. According to reports, the attacks followed the Friday sermons at the local mosques and were instigated by rumors that Copts had converted their homes into churches. albawaba.com reported that the tension started when security forces apprehended Ishaq Fahim, a Copt whose home was used as a church since the nearest church is in another village, 10 km away. The security forces warned Fahim against using his home as a church. Following the attacks, Fahim was arrested along with the Muslim rioters, and the security forces demanded that he sign a commitment that he would not turn his home into a church. The difference may seem slight, but it was enough to trigger the first major schism within Christianity and the result was the Coptic orthodox church of Alexandria, the largest christian church in Egypt and northeast Africa. However, even before Chalcedon, Christianity in Egypt had taken a distinctive form, and dated back to a time shortly after the death of Christ, although, the coptic cross does appear to predate Christ’s coming, and there are those who speculate that there were Egyptian Christians who foretold the coming of christ almost 500 years BC. They use the local language of Coptic (instead of Greek or Latin) and adopted practices of desert monasticism. The history of the Coptic Church is basically the history of Christianity in Egypt. Copts relate that the blessing of Christianity on their country goes back to the days when Jesus was a young boy, when the family of 3 moved to Egypt to escape the king Herod who wanted him dead. The head of the Coptic Church is the Pope of Alexandria, believed to be a successor to the Apostle Mark, who founded the first church in Egypt approximately in the year 42 AD. While monasticism is widespread in religious traditions, Christian monastic practices are widely held to originate with the communities and individuals who isolated themselves from worldly life in the Egyptian deserts and inspired the ascetic spirituality of the Coptic Church. Copts use a liturgical calendar, based on ancient Egyptian traditions, consisting of 13 months and 3 seasons, which are Inundation, sowing, and harvest. The writings of the Desert Fathers, especially their sermons, are highly influential for Coptic Christian spirituality. In particular, and in following in the footsteps of Saint Anthony, the tradition of hesychasm, from the Greek word for “stillness” is of the utmost importance. In the Hesychastic tradition, Coptics emphasize practices of withdrawal and abstention - sometimes to complete isolation and silence - to enable believers to devote themselves fully to a life of prayer and contemplation. Today, there are over 9 Million Copts in Egypt, as well as an additional 1.2 million immigrant Copts who practice their faith around the world.

The Coptic Church near the ninth station on the Via Dolorosa, in the old city, was very calm, and among the gathered faithful were the apostolic nuncio, Archbishop Antonio Franco, and the Latin Patriarch, Emeritus, Michel SabbahVarious messages of solidarity came also from other representatives of diverse Christian confessions. The 21 Christians killed in the Egyptian city of Alexandria in the first hours of the New Year were thus remembered Tuesday afternoon in Jerusalem. Their friends came together to offer prayer and support.  Pope Benedict XVI described the bomb attack as "a vile gesture", and Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak spoke of "terrorism which knows neither country nor religion".Coming just a few weeks after the massacre of Christians in Iraq, the outrage of Alexandria has preoccupied the Christians of the Near and Middle East, and seems to be part — according to the Pope — of a coordinated anti-Christian movement.  Do these events weaken or reinforce the faith of Christians in the Near and Middle East?  For Anba Abraham, Coptic Orthodox Archbishop of Jerusalem, the answer is clear...  Mons. Anba Abraham: "These events strengthen the faith of Christians more than weaken it.  Perhaps some Christians emigrate, but in the end they return with their faith strengthened, and with reinforced love for their country.  Many of these events have happened in over centuries, but the Christians are still here.  They will happen again and again, but we will remain because we have a promise from Christ.  Even though Jesus said that we will have to suffer, he also said that he would conquer the world, and promised that he would always be with us.  He will never leave us.  We are his little flock.  How could he leave us?""Our blood shows that we love Christ", the archbishop said, "just as his blood showed that he loves us".  He said martyrdom is testimony and this gesture has proclaimed to the whole world that our faith in Jesus Christ was strengthened.  And, to the question whether the attacks have brought Christians of the Near and Middle East closer, Fr. Antonious El-Ourshalimi, secretary general of the Coptic Patriarchate had this to say.Fr. Antonious El-Ourshalimi: "It unites them in the sense that there is no difference between Catholics and Orthodox, because our Jesus is the same Jesus.  Our differences disappear just in these tragic events because we are going in the same direction".Drying the tears, Fr. Antonius thus sums up the reaction of local Christians.Fr. Antonious El-Ourshalimi: "I want to say to the people of Egypt: do not be afraid.  They will not be able to destroy our spirit".
