Port Louis , the capital of Mauritius, was founded by the French governor and colonist Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais in 1735.
Situated on the north-west coast, Port Louis is the business and administrative capital of Mauritius. Packed with office-workers during the day, it quickly quietens down after office-hours – allowing visitors to enjoy a night out along the famous Caudan Waterfront.
Those arriving during daylight hours should head for the bustling Central Market or Champ de Mars: the oldest racecourse in the Indian Ocean region.
Port Louis (French: Port-Louis) is the capital city of Mauritius, located in the Port Louis District, the western part also lies in the Black River District. The city is the country's economic, cultural, political centre and most populous city, it is administered by the Municipal City Council of Port Louis. According to the census made by Statistics Mauritius in 2012, the population was at 148,001.

Aapravasi Ghat, ex-Coolie ghat - a World Heritage Site. It was the landing point for the indentured labourers, mainly from India, in the 19th century, following the abolition of slavery in 1834. Its symbolical significance has been highlighted in 'The Aesthetics of Coolitude', devised by poet and semiologist Khal Torabully.
Corner House - A fabulous stationery shop, selling all kinds of wonderful pens, pencils and books. Excellent service and a great range of goods. Has the most eccentric shopkeeper. Worth visiting just to see him.
Caudan Waterfront.
China Town where you will find Chinese shops, restaurants and pharmacies with modern and traditional Chinese remedies.
The Stamp Museum, Mauritius Natural History Museum and the Blue Penny Museum. The Mauritius blue penny and penny orange from 1847 are among the rarest stamps in the world, and you can view them here along with a plethora of other rare cultural and historical artifacts from the island.
Champs de Mars horse racing courses.
The St Louis Cathedral.
The Jummah Mosque, Royal Rd, a rare proof of the skills of Tamil craftsmen and other craftsmen of India, who also built temples and churches. A haven of peace in the middle of this busy capital.
Port Louis Market known as Bazaar Port Louis where you find local products, cheap clothing, and local spices.

Port Louis
Port Louis (French: Port-Louis) is the capital city of Mauritius, located in the Port Louis District, the western part also lies in the Black River District. Port Louis is the country's economic, cultural, political centre and most populous city. It is administered by the Municipal City Council of Port Louis. According to the 2012 census conducted by Statistics Mauritius, the population was 148,001.
History
Port Louis was already in use as a harbor in 1638. In 1735, under French government, it became the administrative center of Mauritius and a major reprovisioning halt for French ships during their passage between Asia and Europe, around the Cape of Good Hope. The Port is named in honor of King Louis XV. During this period of French colonization, Mauritius was known as Ile de France. The French governor at that time, Bertrand-François Mahé de Labourdonnais, contributed to the development of the city. Since Port Louis was relatively well-protected from strong winds during cyclones by the Moka Mountain Range, Port Louis was selected to house both the main harbor and fort for the island. Value of the port continued during the British occupation of the island during the Napoleonic Wars (1800–15), and helped Britain control the Indian Ocean. However, port calls of ships fell drastically following the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. Activity in the port increased during the seven-year closure of the Suez Canal (starting in 1967). Modernization of the port in the late 1970s has helped it maintain its role as the central point for all imports and exports from Mauritius. While Port Louis continues to be the business and administrative capital of Mauritius, expansion of the tourism industry in the late 1990s led to considerable development in Port Louis, with many shops, hotels, and restaurants being built in the Caudan Waterfront area.

Mauritius (
i/məˈrɪʃəs/; French: Maurice), officially the Republic of Mauritius (French: République de Maurice), is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) off the southeast coast of the African continent. The country includes the island of Mauritius, Rodrigues (560 kilometres (350 mi) east), and the outer islands (Agaléga, St. Brandon and two disputed territories). The islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues (172 km (107 mi) southwest) form part of the Mascarene Islands, along with nearby Réunion, a French overseas department. The area of the country is 2,040 km2. The capital and largest city is Port Louis.
The island of Mauritius was visited during the medieval period by the Arabs and then by the Portuguese, who named it Dina Arobi and Cirne, respectively. The island was uninhabited until the Dutch Republic established a colony in 1638, with the Dutch naming the island after Prince Maurice van Nassau. The Dutch colony was abandoned in 1710, and, five years later, the island became a French colony and was named Isle de France. Due to its strategic position, Mauritius was known as the "star and key" of the Indian Ocean.

Blue Penny Museum
The Blue Penny Museum is a stamp museum at Caudan Waterfront in Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius. It opened in November 2001.
The museum collection includes the 1847 Blue Penny and Red Penny stamps. The stamps were bought in 1993 for $2,000,000 by a consortium of Mauritian enterprises headed by The Mauritius Commercial Bank and brought back to Mauritius after almost 150 years. For conservation, the originals are illuminated only temporarily. Most of the time only copies are to be seen.
The museum, founded by The Mauritius Commercial Bank, also houses the original statue of Paul and Virginia, created in 1881 by Prosper d'Épinay.

Während unseres Urlaubs auf Mauritius haben wir auch einen Tagesausflug in den Norden der Insel gemacht. Zuerst ging es in die Hauptstadt Port Louis. Hier haben wir das Blue Penny Museum besucht. In dem Museum ist die Kolonialgeschichte der Insel dargestellt sowie eine Sammlung der wertvollen Briefmarken aus den Zeiten der britischen Kolonialzeit. Die Blaue Mauritius ist auch dabei. Nach einem Besuch auf dem Wochenmarkt in der Nähe des Hafens ging es mit einer Yacht an der Küste entlang in Richtung Norden nach Trou aux Biches. Nach dem Mittagessen ging es dann wieder mit dem Bus weiter an das Cap Malheureux mit der vorgelagerten Insel Coin de Mire. Danach ging es zur Firma Historic Marine in Goodlands. Hier werden maßstabsgetreu diverse (historische) Schiffe in bester Handarbeit nachgebaut. Zum Abschluss ging es dann noch nach Pamplemousses in den Botanischen Garten. Der ist berühmt für seine Wasserlilien und verschiedensten Palmensorten. -

Aapravasi Ghat, ex-Coolie ghat - a World Heritage Site. It was the landing point for the indentured labourers, mainly from India, in the 19th century, following the abolition of slavery in 1834. Its symbolical significance has been highlighted in 'The Aesthetics of Coolitude', devised by poet and semiologist Khal Torabully.
Corner House - A fabulous stationery shop, selling all kinds of wonderful pens, pencils and books. Excellent service and a great range of goods. Has the most eccentric shopkeeper. Worth visiting just to see him.
Caudan Waterfront.
China Town where you will find Chinese shops, restaurants and pharmacies with modern and traditional Chinese remedies.
The Stamp Museum, Mauritius Natural History Museum and the Blue Penny Museum. The Mauritius blue penny and penny orange from 1847 are among the rarest stamps in the world, and you can view them here along with a plethora of other rare cultural and historical artifacts from the island.
Champs de Mars horse racing courses.
The St Louis Cathedral.
The Jummah Mosque, Royal Rd, a rare proof of the skills of Tamil craftsmen and other craftsmen of India, who also built temples and churches. A haven of peace in the middle of this busy capital.
Port Louis Market known as Bazaar Port Louis where you find local products, cheap clothing, and local spices.

Feel the sounds and almost the smell of the capital of Maurtius in my authentic street tour....
Port Louis (por loo-ee), the island's capital and largest city of Mauritius, can feel like a kaleidoscope of countries and cultures, with flashes of India, Africa, Europe, China and the Middle East. Unless you've essential business to transact here, or unless you're in the country for a prolonged visit, there aren't that many reasons to come – there are numerous other day excursions that we'd rank above Port Louis. But if you are here, it can be a good place to take the pulse of the country and to get an alternative slant on the island's rarefied world of resorts and private beaches. Most interest lies amid the bustle and chaos of the streets, the tangle of ethnic quarters and some wonderfully preserved colonial buildings. Apart from Le Caudan Waterfront, it all shuts down after dark when countless day commuters rumble out of town at sunset en route to their homes on the Central Plateau.

Während unseres Urlaubs auf Mauritius haben wir auch einen Tagesausflug in den Norden der Insel gemacht. Zuerst ging es in die Hauptstadt Port Louis. Hier haben wir das Blue Penny Museum besucht. In dem Museum ist die Kolonialgeschichte der Insel dargestellt sowie eine Sammlung der wertvollen Briefmarken aus den Zeiten der britischen Kolonialzeit. Die Blaue Mauritius ist auch dabei.
Nach einem Besuch auf dem Wochenmarkt in der Nähe des Hafens ging es mit einer Yacht an der Küste entlang in Richtung Norden nach Trou aux Biches. Nach dem Mittagessen ging es dann wieder mit dem Bus weiter an das Cap Malheureux mit der vorgelagerten Insel Coin de Mire. Danach ging es zur Firma Historic Marine in Goodlands. Hier werden maßstabsgetreu diverse (historische) Schiffe in bester Handarbeit nachgebaut. Zum Abschluss ging es dann noch nach Pamplemousses in den Botanischen Garten. Der ist berühmt für seine Wasserlilien und verschiedensten Palmensorten.

Mauritius Tagesausflüge - Port Louis
Während unseres Urlaubs auf Mauritius haben wir auch einen Tagesausflug in den Norden der Insel gemacht. Zuerst ging es in die Hauptstadt Port Louis. Hier haben wir das Blue Penny Museum besucht. In dem Museum ist die Kolonialgeschichte der Insel dargestellt sowie eine Sammlung der wertvollen Briefmarken aus den Zeiten der britischen Kolonialzeit. Die Blaue Mauritius ist auch dabei. Nach einem Besuch auf dem Wochenmarkt in der Nähe des Hafens ging es mit einer Yacht an der Küste entlang in Richtung Norden nach Trou aux Biches. Nach dem Mittagessen ging es dann wieder mit dem Bus weiter an das Cap Malheureux mit der vorgelagerten Insel Coin de Mire. Danach ging es zur Firma Historic Marine in Goodlands. Hier werden maßstabsgetreu diverse (historische) Schiffe in bester Handarbeit nachgebau...

Corner House - A fabulous stationery shop, selling all kinds of wonderful pens, pencils and books. Excellent service and a great range of goods. Has the most eccentric shopkeeper. Worth visiting just to see him.

China Town where you will find Chinese shops, restaurants and pharmacies with modern and traditional Chinese remedies.
The Stamp Museum, Mauritius Natural History Museum and the Blue Penny Museum. The Mauritius blue penny and penny orange from 1847 are among the rarest stamps in the world, and you can view them here along with a plethora of other rare cultural and historical artifacts from the island.

The small insular country of 1800 square kilometers located in the middle of the Indian Ocean is the real tropical paradise. The capital of Mauritius is Port Louis. Commercial in civil services are both concentrated here. This is also the location of the biggest market in all may see harbor of the country. The waterfront seaside commercial in cultural center is built near the harbor on the seaside with restaurants, coffee bars, snack bars, cinemas and a casino.
The Caudan Waterfront building is on the other side of the harbor which also has the copy of a lighthouse built inside. In front of it is the 18th century windmill and a playground with a huge sailboat. Otherwise the Caudan is a stopping center just like the waterfront with restaurants and shops but also with hotel and casino.
The central market is primarily a food market. Sixty-eight of the island inhabitants are Indian, 27% are Creel and the rest are Chinese, French or of other nationalities. Asia, Africa and Europe are mixed in the customs, religion, mentality and culture of the locals as well as in the gastronomy. Excellent weather and soil are favorable for vegetable and fruit cultivation. The sea supports their gastronomic specialties with fish, crabs and other seafood. On the menu, Indian curry dishes and spicy Creel Chinese and French specialties are all listed together.
The freshly picked fruits have quite a different taste than those delivered to Europe after a long trip. The neighborhood of the central market is the Empire of the wondering sellers from straw hats to conga drums. They sell everything. Boxes made of tropical wood and woolen goods are especially nice. Anyone looking for a present can take tea, coffee, rum or spices home.
Mauritius is known for its good quality tech style in soap products which have quite reasonable prices. Indian shoes are surprisingly cheap and among the huge amount of far eastern goods, we can also run across some inexpensive original souvenirs. Souvenirs, handcrafted items, books and maps can be found in the shopping centers but expensive boutiques; ethnic cloth shops and different services are also to be found here. The accessories knitted for photography and video making can be attained to here too.
The Dodo bird which is the symbol of the island can be bought in any imaginable form. There are wood carvings and ceramics statues of it but it can also be found in jade or sea tide. It's figured in orange t-shirts and bags as well. The model ships are made by hand with careful work and reduced copies of existing ships. We can find both 0402 and the catty sock. The discovery or the Santa Maria, on request they arrange for flight safe packaging of the fragile models in the shop.
The oldest horse track of the world is on Mauritius and the outskirts of Port Louis. In the winter months, all together 23 races are held here. Mauritius was the 4th country in the world which printed stabs. In 1847, the rumor held a large scale ball. Stabs were stuck to the invitation in large numbers, so that they we're soon out of stock. The quickly ordered reprints were mistakably marked with a post office notice instead of post paid. The wrong prints begin the object to fill it to list collecting passion two decades later. Specialist books mentioned 14 such stabs, only four are known as being on the island. One of these is exhibited in the Blue Penny museum in Port Louis.

The capital city of Mauritius is Port Louis. There are a number of attractions, including the Caudan Waterfront and the Port Louis market (Central market). In order to experience the street food of Mauritius you should head towards the Port Louis Market. There is a variety of fresh produce and the not to be missed dal puri. We ate dal puri and danced to sega music on the streets of the city.

The little island, lying in the center of the Indian Ocean is a real tropical paradise. Along the white sand beaches, shaded by coconut palm trees there are many luxury hotels. We can take excursions to the nearby islands, or take a dive in the turquoise blue water. In the center of the island, on the top of a vulcanic plateau, emerald green sugar cane plantations can be found. On the Domaine Les Pailles estate we can have a glimpse at how rum and sugar are produced from sugar cane. We can try the Indian dishes and take a look at the colorful Hindu temple. We might enjoy the Sega dance and taste the teas from the Bois Cheri plantation. We might also take a Jeep Tour through the Black River National Park and take a look at the marvellous waterfall of Chamarel, while in the zoo the famous pink pigeon and the golden bat can be found. In the city there is the Blue Penny Museum and one of the worlds most beautiful tropical parks, the Pamplemousses Botanic Garden to visit.

Grand Bay was the first area of the island to fully experience the tourist boom. A shopping and leisure paradise, Grand Bay is also where Mauritians go when they want a fun-filled night out (restaurants, bars and discos). Recently renovated, La Cuvette beach is well worth a visit.
Pereybere — The wonderful Pereybere public beach is popular because of its shopping facilities, restaurants and pubs. This is one of the best beaches for swimming.
Balaclava Ruins — Near (a few metres) Baie aux Tortues, which 17th century sailors named after the many tortoises in the area, can be found the ruins of the old Balaclava estate. Visitors can see the sea walls, whose initial foundations were laid down by Mahé de Labourdonnais. The location of the ruins now form part of Maritim Hotel, and public access may not be possible.
The Triolet Shivala — The longest village on the island, Triolet offers an opportunity to visit the biggest Hindu temple, the Maheswarnath, first built in 1819 in honour of the Gods Shiva, Krishna, Vishnu, Muruga, Brahma and Ganesha.
The Labourdonnais Orchards — Discover a large variety of tropical fruit trees, and colourful and perfumed exotic flowers. Trips on mountain bikes or hiking are possible.
The Caudan Waterfront — The Caudan Waterfront and its surroundings has a great collection of local souvenir shops and other foreign brand materials such as clothes, and spirits. In addition to the harbor of Mauritius, you will also find the movie theater, game arcades, and local restaurants.
The Bazaar of Port-Louis — Literally translated as "The Market of Port Louis" — here you will find a variety of local snacks and tropical fruits, the cheapest food you will find in the capital city. Numerous shops sell well made traditional crafted objects such as the "goni" basket. Unfortunately you will also find a lot of stalls selling pirate versions of programs, movies and games: they are extremely cheap but still are illegal and do not guarantee quality. You may get a version that is not the original, but created by other than what is stated. Like all crowded areas, be wary of your surroundings and keep your belongings close to you. Food sold on the street may have health issues, but that is, for the most part, rare. If you have any allergies, refrain from eating at these stalls.
The SSR Botanical Garden If you want to see some plants originating from Mauritius, then this is the place for you. The SSR botanical garden is the oldest botanical garden in the Southern Hemisphere. It was founded by Pierre Poivre (1719 – 1786) in 1770, contains some flora unique to Mauritius and covers an area of around 37 hectares. It also has several animals, being especially famous for its fish, deer and tortoises, as well as an old replica of a sugar mill.
Aquarium Situated near Pointe Aux Piments, this aquarium contains a wide variety of fishes and crabs. You can also see some sharks and turtles in a big tank placed in the aquarium. Stone fish and muray fish can also be seen in the aquarium.
Restaurants — Don't hesitate to go to the various local restaurants around the city. Although many of them advertise a specific ethnic cuisine, like everywhere around the world they have their own mix of traditional and local. Fried rice, for example, may be different than your usual experience.

Feel the sounds and almost the smell of the capital of Maurtius in my authentic street tour....
Port Louis (por loo-ee), the island's capital and largest city of Mauritius, can feel like a kaleidoscope of countries and cultures, with flashes of India, Africa, Europe, China and the Middle East. Unless you've essential business to transact here, or unless you're in the country for a prolonged visit, there aren't that many reasons to come – there are numerous other day excursions that we'd rank above Port Louis. But if you are here, it can be a good place to take the pulse of the country and to get an alternative slant on the island's rarefied world of resorts and private beaches. Most interest lies amid the bustle and chaos of the streets, the tangle of ethnic quarters and some wonderfully preserved colonial buildings. Apart from Le Caudan Waterfront, it all shuts down after dark when countless day commuters rumble out of town at sunset en route to their homes on the Central Plateau.

Während unseres Urlaubs auf Mauritius haben wir auch einen Tagesausflug in den Norden der Insel gemacht. Zuerst ging es in die Hauptstadt Port Louis. Hier haben wir das Blue Penny Museum besucht. In dem Museum ist die Kolonialgeschichte der Insel dargestellt sowie eine Sammlung der wertvollen Briefmarken aus den Zeiten der britischen Kolonialzeit. Die Blaue Mauritius ist auch dabei.
Nach einem Besuch auf dem Wochenmarkt in der Nähe des Hafens ging es mit einer Yacht an der Küste entlang in Richtung Norden nach Trou aux Biches. Nach dem Mittagessen ging es dann wieder mit dem Bus weiter an das Cap Malheureux mit der vorgelagerten Insel Coin de Mire. Danach ging es zur Firma Historic Marine in Goodlands. Hier werden maßstabsgetreu diverse (historische) Schiffe in bester Handarbeit nachgebaut. Zum Abschluss ging es dann noch nach Pamplemousses in den Botanischen Garten. Der ist berühmt für seine Wasserlilien und verschiedensten Palmensorten.

Genèse de Port louis à Port louis
La ville de Port Louis, située sur la côte nord ouest, est la capitale administrative et financière de l'île. Protégée par une rangée de montagnes d'un côté et enfouie au creux d'une baie calme de l'autre, elle se trouva être le site idéale pour la fondation d'une ville et de par sa location géographique, elle pourrait être facilement défendu lors d'attaques.

This flight was perfect, upper deck with the LED lighting, the huge bathrooms, the wide seats, the crew, the sound and remember we were only in economy.
