Djibouti (/dʒɪˈbuːti/ ji-BOO-tee; Arabic: جيبوتي Jībūtī, French: Djibouti, Somali: Jabuuti, Afar: Gabuuti), officially the Republic of Djibouti, is a country located in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by Eritrea in the north, Ethiopia in the west and south, and Somaliland in the southeast. The remainder of the border is formed by the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden at the east. Djibouti occupies a total area of just 23,200 km2 (8,958 sq mi).
In antiquity, the territory was part of the Land of Punt. Nearby Zeila (now in Somaliland) was the seat of the medieval Adal and Ifat Sultanates. In the late 19th century, the colony of French Somaliland was established following treaties signed by the ruling Somali and Afar sultans with the French and its railroad to Dire Dawa (and later Addis Ababa) allowed it to quickly supersede Zeila as the port for southern Ethiopia and the Ogaden. It was subsequently renamed to the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas in 1967. A decade later, the Djiboutian people voted for independence. This officially marked the establishment of the Republic of Djibouti, named after its capital city. Djibouti joined the United Nations the same year, on September 20, 1977. In the early 1990s, tensions over government representation led to armed conflict, which ended in a power sharing agreement in 2000 between the ruling party and the opposition.

Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Defense Services Min Aung Hlaing is on an eight-day visit to India and has received what Indian media termed a “king’s treatment”. Why does India give much importance to the Myanmar military chief’s visit? When Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office three years ago, he said his government would "act east" instead of adopting the existing policy of “look east”. What progress has he achieved and what implications does the policy have on China-ASEAN relations? Myanmar’s Neh-Gin-Pao Kip-Gen, Executive Director of the Center for South East Asian Studies at O.P. Jindal Global University, and Victor Gao, Director of China-Myanmar Friendship Association weigh in on the issue. Djibouti, a resource-poor nation of fewer than one million people in the Horn o...

ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA — The Chinese-built railway Ethiopia-Djibouti railway officially opened on Wednesday, marking the latest instance of the Sino-African cooperation. The 750-km railway links the Red Sea port of Djibouti to Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa. According to Xinhua, it is Africa’s first electric railway. The trains are powered by overhead wires. The train can travel at a top speed of 120 km per hour, which is much slower than other high-speed trains in the world. Nonetheless, the railway is expected to reduce a drive time of seven days between the two places to just 10 hours. According to Xinhua, the railway will be managed by a consortium of Chinese companies for about six years until Ethiopians are trained enough to take over. The Chinese management aims to create ne...

When the day heats up, life slows down in Djibouti. Half of the male population on the Horn of Africa nation chew a mildly hallucinogenic drug called khat, a stimulant which suppresses hunger. Tax receipts make it financial manna for the state but it's popularity reduces productivity, helping keep the population in poverty.
Joint press point with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and the Prime Minister of Djibouti, Dileita Mohammed Dileita Prime Minister, it is a pleasure to welcome you. This is the first visit of a high-level official from Djibouti to NATO. And the fact that you have come here today shows the importance we attach to our dialogue and our mutual engagement. Djibouti plays a central role in supporting the international community's efforts in the Horn of Africa -- especially in the vital fight against piracy. And we have a good cooperation within the framework of these international efforts. NATO already has a liaison officer in Djibouti to ensure effective coordination with all those involved in counter-piracy activities. I would like to thank you for the support which the autho...

16/10/2012 - The last time Djibouti received normal rainfall was six years ago. On a good day, Djibouti's weather is harsh. Temperatures average at around 35 degrees Celsius climbing up to 50 degrees in the 'hot' months. Successive droughts and failed rains have seen the number of livestock dwindle. Many nomadic herders who traverse the desert have since lost most of their animals resorting to a sedentary life near urban centres. Already, about 80 per cent of the country's population lives in the capital, Djibouti city. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, there are 1,600 small gardens in Djibouti each measuring about half a hectare. Each year, these gardens produce an average of 6,000 tonnes of fruits and vegetable, most of it is consumed in the capital. About 90 per cent of food...

Hey everyone, this is my first project ever with iMovie. It's amazing what not having internet, TV, cell phone, or basic human contact will do for creativity. I added Jack Johnson "Just Can't go to Sleep" and I hope you enjoy. It's an experience like this that makes you thankful for the basics in life like shelter, food, water, shoes, infrastructure, dental/health care, and just about anything else that we take for granted.

Construction of US$ 1.4bn Ethiopia-Djibouti oil pipeline has finally been given authorization to commence after an agreement was signed between the two countries on February 7 this month. The project is set to take three years according to the Ethiopian Ambassador to Djibouti Suleman Dedefo. The fuel is at the end going to be distributed to the whole nation from Awash. Djibouti's foreign minister has accused neighboring Eritrea of occupying Dumeira Mountain and Dumeira Island- a disputed territory along their border. The move was made shortly after Qatar withdrew its peacekeepers in the region this week. Mahamoud Ali Youssouf says Djibouti's military is 'on alert' and that it has lodged complaints to the United Nations and the African Union. Eritrea in the past has clashed with both Djibouti and Ethiopia over borders. Qatar has helped to mediate a long-running territorial dispute between the two countries. But on Wednesday, Doha pulled all of its troops from the border between the two East African nations. The move came amid a diplomatic dispute with other Arab nations that are trying to isolate Qatar. The 21st annual Investing in Africa Mining Indaba kicks off in Cape Town this week. 7000 delegates from African and International mining houses will be attending. South Africa has the largest mining industry on the continent but is struggling with a number of challenges. Sumitra Nydoo reports
For hundreds of years the Afar people have produced salt by cutting blocks from an 800 m thick layer of salt. The salt is cut in blocks of the same size that are loaded on camels and go in a transport of a week to Mekele the nearest city. The Afar people have refused to use more modern forms of transport like trucks. The work is done all year, also when it is extremely hot in summer, as the region is 100 m below sea level.

In 1975, China built the $500 million Tanzam Railway from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia, the single longest railway in sub-Saharan Africa. Forty years later, China helped build the first light railway on the continent in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which opened in October 2015. In April 2016, the China-Africa Research Initiative (CARI) at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) released its exclusive database of Chinese loans to Africa (2000 to 2014). One of our biggest discoveries was that Chinese loans on the continent mostly go toward building connective infrastructure – roads, railways, and power lines – rather than pursuing natural resources via the petroleum or mining sectors. Djibouti, a tiny country in Northeast Africa, is situated at the gateway to the Suez Canal, one of the world's busiest shipping routes. While its location is an economic commodity for a country that’s half unemployed, it also puts it at the center of a multinational fight against pirates in Somalia and terrorist groups. NewsHour Weekend Special Correspondent Martin Seemungal reports on foreign nations’ interests in Djibouti.
The Chinese Navy will soon establish its first overseas support base in Djibouti, as ships carrying military personnel for the base left Zhanjiang in southern China's Guangdong Province for the Horn of Africa country on Tuesday. Djibouti is small and thinly populated. But its location on the Horn of Africa gives Djibouti substantial importance, and a number of major nations want a military presence there. Jeffrey Young Reports
According to UN estimates, nearly 100,000 people have fled Yemen since violence erupted there in March. Of those escaping the conflict, over 20,000 have sought refuge in the tiny East African nation of Djibouti, an authoritarian state located between Eritrea and Somalia seen as a beacon of stability in the region, largely due to its hosting of a US military base. The Markazi refugee camp, located in the arid and dusty Obock region, plays host to many of those fleeing Yemen. Refugees can live in the tented camp, where the average June temperature varied between 111 and 122 degrees Fahrenheit (44 - 50 degrees Celsius). Otherwise they can pay cripplingly high rental costs for substandard living conditions in Djibouti City. Following on from our coverage of the conflict in Aden, VICE News tr...
Since early 2015 Yemen has been gripped by civil war, with forces backed by a Saudi coalition fighting Iran-backed Houthi rebels. Since the start of the conflict, Britain has sold nearly £3bn worth of weapons to Saudi Arabia, a dictatorship accused of war crimes and human rights breaches by several NGOs. I went to speak to Yemenis whose lives have been destroyed by the conflict and asks Sir Alan Duncan, governmental special envoy to Yemen, if the British people should be questioning their links to the Saudi regime more. Humiliating Defeat of 67-India And 79-Vietnam Remains A Sore Thorn In China's Glorious Military Rise Notwithstanding rise in China's power and military strength, Nathu La is physiologically a weak spot for the People's Liberation Army, akin to the Sino-Vietnam border, having lost to the Indian and Vietnamese counterparts in 1967 and 1979, respectively. The Indian military, overcoming the loss in 1962, had dealt a severe blow to PLA in 1967 in Nathu La sector that resulted in the death of 400 Chinese soldiers, a fact neither debated in Beijing nor Delhi. The Vietnamese Army had dealt a similar blow to PLA in 1979 along the Sino-Vietnam border merely four years after unification of Vietnam. Djibouti is preparing for the future. The tiny country in the Horn of Africa has outlined an ambitious set of goals it hopes to achieve by 2035. These goals are the result of careful research, assisted by the World Bank, to identify sectors of the economy with the potential to generate growth. As part of this exercise, the World Bank brought representatives from Cape Verde, Dubai and Mauritius—countries that faced similar obstacles in the past—to Djibouti to share their experiences.
