The University of Alabama (Alabama or UA) is a public research university located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States, and the flagship of the University of Alabama System. Founded in 1831, UA is one of the oldest and the largest of the universities in Alabama. UA offers programs of study in 13 academic divisions leading to bachelor's, master's, Education Specialist, and doctoral degrees. The only publicly supported law school in the state is at UA. Other academic programs unavailable elsewhere in Alabama include doctoral programs in anthropology, communication and information sciences, metallurgical engineering, music, Romance languages, and social work.
As one of the first public universities established in the early 19th century southwestern frontier of the United States, the University of Alabama has left a vast cultural imprint on the state, region and nation over the past two centuries. The school was a center of activity during the American Civil War and the African-American Civil Rights Movement. The University of Alabama varsity football program (nicknamed the Crimson Tide), which was inaugurated in 1892, ranks as one of 10 winningest programs in US history. In a 1913 speech then-president George H. Denny extolled the university as the "capstone of the public school system in the state [of Alabama]," lending the university its current nickname, The Capstone. The University of Alabama has consistently been ranked as one of the top 50 public universities in the nation by the U.S. News & World Report. The University of Alabama is consistently recognized as having one of the most beautiful college campuses in America.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is a public university in Birmingham in the U.S. state of Alabama. Developed from an academic extension center established in 1936, the institution became an autonomous institution in 1969 and is today one of three institutions in the University of Alabama System. In the fall of 2013, 18,568 students from more than 110 countries were enrolled at UAB pursuing studies in 140 programs of study in 12 academic divisions leading to bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and professional degrees in the social and behavioral sciences, the liberal arts, business, education, engineering, and health-related fields such as medicine, dentistry, optometry, nursing, and public health.
The UAB Health System, one of the largest academic medical centers in the United States, is affiliated with the university. UAB Hospital sponsors residency programs in medical specialties, including internal medicine, neurology, surgery, radiology, and anesthesiology. UAB Hospital is the only ACS verified Level I trauma center in Alabama, as rated by the American College of Surgeons Trauma Program.

In 1954, Bill Hefner (tenor), Buddy Parker (lead), and Hershel Wooten (bass), all former members of Bobby Strickland's Crusaders Quartet, joined with former Oak Ridge Quartet member Pat Patterson and former Rangers Quartet pianist, David Reece, to form the Harvesters Quartet in Charlotte, NC. Patterson was the emcee and manager until he left the group in 1958. Both roles were then assumed by Bill Hefner. The Harvesters were affiliated with station WBTV in Charlotte. By late 1958 the Harvesters Quartet consisted of Hefner, Parker, Don Norman (baritone), Fred Rose (bass), and Jack Clark (pianist). All of these members except for Rose remained with the quartet until they disbanded in 1965. After Rose, the bass slot was filled by Jay Simmons, Bob Thacker, and Noel Fox. During the first half o...

[Recorded: June 4, 2001] Founded in 1970, the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) created, over a relatively short period, a paradigm shift in computing. Many of the technologies in modern personal computers, including high-quality graphical user interfaces featuring windows and icons, computer generated bitmapped graphics, Ethernet networked distributed computing, and laser printing, were mature technologies at PARC by the end of the 1970s. The platform on which many of these technologies were utilized was the Xerox Alto personal computer, developed at PARC in 1973. Although small and slow by today's standards, the Alto's flexibility made it an ideal system for hardware and software experimentation. In this talk, Alto designers Chuck Thacker and Butler Lampson describe a few of th...
