What is Microsoft BOB? In this Youtube exclusive I'll show you one of Microsoft's failed experiments with alternative user interfaces.
Before Windows 95 was released, Microsoft had another software program in the works that was designed to make computers easier to use for the novice user. It was released as Microsoft Bob a few months before Windows 95 came out. Bob's interface was designed as a home with rooms that was intended to make users relate to programs and objects more easily. While it may have included some pretty interesting features, it was a commercial failure because it was not accepted very well by consumers.
This was mainly due to the fact that the personal guides ask a lot of questions and ask to confirm everything.

Windows 3.1 was a little hard to use for my mum just like it was for those who used it in 1992-1995. So it was time for microsoft to make a revolutionary interface to make using the computer as easy as doing tasks in your home. Microsoft released microsoft BOB in 1995 which absolutly flopped. Why did microsoft BOB fail? Well, here's a first hand, unbaised/unleaded users first time attempt with bob. My mum was told that it was designed to make using the computer super easy but I didn't exactly tell her if the product was successful or not. Lets see if history repeats itself!

Set to launch on startup for this video, I launch Firefox, Internet Explorer, iTunes, Pidgin, GIMP, and OpenOffice in Microsoft Bob. Another video with the actual launch of the program from within Windows will be made later. Created using Microsoft Windows Media Encoder (which is why audio is messed up in iTunes. There are no good free third party screencast applications out there that support audio).

Microsoft Bob
Microsoft Bob is a Microsoft software product that was released in March 10, 1995 and discontinued in early 1996. The program was intended to provide a more user-friendly interface for the Windows 3.1x, Windows 95 and Windows NT operating systems, supplanting the Windows Program Manager. Microsoft Bob presented screens showing a "house", with "rooms" that the user could go to containing familiar objects corresponding to computer applications—for instance, a desk with pen and paper, a checkbook, and other items. In this case, clicking on the pen and paper would open the word processor.
A cartoon dog named Rover and other cartoon characters provided guidance using speech balloons.
Microsoft Bob was greatly criticized in the press, did not gain wide acceptance with users, and was not a successful nor long-lived product.
Origins
Microsoft Bob was released in March 1995 (before Windows 95 was released), although it had been widely publicized prior to that date under the codename "Utopia". The project leader for Bob was Karen Fries, a Microsoft researcher. The design was based on research by Professors Clifford Nass and Byron Reeves of Stanford University. At one point, Bill Gates's wife Melinda Gates worked as one of the Marketing Managers on the project. Microsoft originally purchased the domain name bob.com from Boston-area techie Bob Antia, but later traded it to Bob Kerstein for the windows2000.com domain name.

Visual effects
In filmmaking, visual effects (abbreviated VFX) are the processes by which imagery is created and/or manipulated outside the context of a live action shot. Visual effects involve the integration of live-action footage and generated imagery to create environments which look realistic, but would be dangerous, expensive, impractical, or simply impossible to capture on film. Visual effects using computer generated imagery have recently become accessible to the independent filmmaker with the introduction of affordable and easy-to-use animation and compositing software.
Timing
Visual effects are often integral to a movie's story and appeal. Although most visual effects work is completed during post-production, it usually must be carefully planned and choreographed in pre-production and production. Visual effects primarily executed in Post-Production with the use of multiple tools and technologies such as graphic design, modeling, animation and similar software, while special effects such as explosions and car chases are made on set. A visual effects supervisor is usually involved with the production from an early stage to work closely with production and the film's director design, guide and lead the teams required to achieve the desired effects.

Before Windows 95 was released, Microsoft had another software program in the works that was designed to make computers easier to use for the novice user. It was released as Microsoft Bob a few months before Windows 95 came out. Bob's interface was designed as a home with rooms that was intended to make users relate to programs and objects more easily. While it may have included some pretty interesting features, it was a commercial failure because it was not accepted very well by consumers. Mum tries out Microsoft BOB (1995)
Windows 3.1 was a little hard to use for my mum just like it was for those who used it in 1992-1995. So it was time for microsoft to make a revolutionary interface to make using the computer as easy as doing tasks in your home. Microsoft released microsoft BOB in 1995 which absolutly flopped. Why did microsoft BOB fail? Well, here's a first hand, unbaised/unleaded users first time attempt with bob. My mum was told that it was designed to make using the computer super easy but I didn't exactly tell her if the product was successful or not. Lets see if history repeats itself! Of Sleuth Wood in the lake,
There lies a leafy island
Where flapping herons wake
The drowsy water rats;
There we've hid our faery vats,
Full of berrys
And of reddest stolen cherries.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.
Where the wave of moonlight glosses
The dim gray sands with light,
Far off by furthest Rosses
We foot it all the night,
Weaving olden dances
Mingling hands and mingling glances
Till the moon has taken flight;
To and fro we leap
And chase the frothy bubbles,
While the world is full of troubles
And anxious in its sleep.

dagens skolemodell / utdanningsmodell
som en tvangstrøye.
Politikkere er så bekymret for
en stadig økende drop-out av
unge fra skolen.
Det er ikke så rart det skjer, fordi
dagens modell har for øye å gjøre
deg til en arbeidsrobott i samfunnet,
som pliktig vil svare:
"Jeg gjør bare jobben min jeg"
Denne samfunnsmodellen ble i sin tid
etablert av kabalen ( du kan lese om
den i David Wilcock sin artikkel, om
kabalen )
Man ønsker seg pliktoppfyllende arbeidere,
som genererer penger i forbrukersamfunns-
modellen...men som dermed via bl.a det enorme
trykket på akademiske fag kobler folk vekk fra
medmenneskelighet og hjertebevissthet.

MAGGIE: Piracy is not just a phenomena in undeveloped markets. It is actually a problem in our home market in the United States.
HATTIE: (Voiceover) Maggie Sanchez is Microsoft's General Manager for the Windows client business in the U.S.
MAGGIE: Software piracy is really about misuse at the end of the day. It's the perfect word to encapsulate what software piracy is. It's about the illegal sale and distribution of software. The piracy problem in small business is actually larger than the broader piracy problem across all business segments. It is approximately 1 in 5 of all PCs are pirated and for small business it is slightly higher than that. So it is a very significant problem.
GEORGE: Just as they wouldn't want the product or service they offer to be taken from them they shouldn't be taking other people's software. You really can't say anything beyond that--at that level. That's not even a creativity issue. It's just basic business ethics.
HATTIE: Why do you think people do it? Steal software -- I mean adults who are trying to run a business?
GEORGE: Probably because it's easy to do.
MARK: As an adult, if you're running a business, ask yourself when you do something, would I want my mother and father to know what I am doing. Or, as a parent, can I go home at night and tell my kids what I did today? Am I proud of it? In terms of intellectual property as well, if you can't, I suggest you don't do it. If you feel comfortable going home and saying to your kids, what did I do today? Well, I stole a couple things from Microsoft and I took some stuff from Oracle. Stole a movie or two. You don't want to go home and tell your kids. You don't want to tell your spouse. You don't want to tell your parents.
MAGGIE: As a matter of fact, many small business owners are unaware. They do not know that they are using pirated software. Which is why I said earlier, one of the key pillars is to educate as much as possible. Microsoft has a new program called The Windows Genuine Advantage which is all about providing small business customers with tools to determine if they have genuine software or not. It is a "how to tell" program.
HATTIE: (Voiceover) Bob runs his office on Microsoft and he showed us how microsoft.com/genuine quickly validated his system. In the Microsoft lab, I tested a computer that did not have authentic software. This is what you'll see if your software is not genuine.

Verizon CEO predicts wireless devices will grow from 1 Billion devices to 10 Billion in a matter of 5 years. By 2014 CEA Projects U.S. consumers will purchase nearly 30 million internet-connected TVs and the worldwide figure will reach upwards of 185 Million.
The infrastructure is getting maxed due to greater/accelerated use of the network for live video, videos streaming, and general growth of smart phones. The devices that attach to the internet are growing exponentially. And what we do with these devices is changing and requiring more bandwidth than ever before.

Mum tries out Microsoft BOB (1995)
Windows 3.1 was a little hard to use for my mum just like it was for those who used it in 1992-1995. So it was time for microsoft to make a revolutionary interface to make using the computer as easy as doing tasks in your home. Microsoft released microsoft BOB in 1995 which absolutly flopped. Why did microsoft BOB fail? Well, here's a first hand, unbaised/unleaded users first time attempt with bob. My mum was told that it was designed to make using the computer super easy but I didn't exactly tell her if the product was successful or not. Lets see if history repeats itself! Tasks Given: - What time is it? - Write and save a text document. - What's 48*32 - Customize the way your computer looks - Turn of your computer

Before Windows 95 was released, Microsoft had another software program in the works that was designed to make computers easier to use for the novice user. It was released as Microsoft Bob a few months before Windows 95 came out. Bob's interface was designed as a home with rooms that was intended to make users relate to programs and objects more easily. While it may have included some pretty interesting features, it was a commercial failure because it was not accepted very well by consumers.
This was mainly due to the fact that the personal guides ask a lot of questions and ask to confirm everything.

Politikkere er så bekymret for
en stadig økende drop-out av
unge fra skolen.
Det er ikke så rart det skjer, fordi
dagens modell har for øye å gjøre
deg til en arbeidsrobott i samfunnet,
som pliktig vil svare:
"Jeg gjør bare jobben min jeg"
Denne samfunnsmodellen ble i sin tid
etablert av kabalen ( du kan lese om

kabalen )
Man ønsker seg pliktoppfyllende arbeidere,
som genererer penger i forbrukersamfunns-
modellen...men som dermed via bl.a det enorme
trykket på akademiske fag kobler folk vekk fra
medmenneskelighet og hjertebevissthet.

QUESTIONS:
* Mark Litvack says, “As an adult, if you’re running a business, ask yourself when you do something, would I want my mother and father to know what I am doing. Or, as a parent, can I go home at night and tell my kids what I did today?”
* What is your primary purpose at work? Why are you paid? How would you respond if someone had the power to force you to work without pay?
TRANSCRIPT:
MAGGIE: Piracy is not just a phenomena in undeveloped markets. It is actually a problem in our home market in the United States.
HATTIE: (Voiceover) Maggie Sanchez is Microsoft's General Manager for the Windows client business in the U.S.
MAGGIE: Software piracy is really about misuse at the end of the day. It's the perfect word to encapsulate what software piracy is. It's about the illegal sale and distribution of software. The piracy problem in small business is actually larger than the broader piracy problem across all business segments. It is approximately 1 in 5 of all PCs are pirated and for small business it is slightly higher than that. So it is a very significant problem.
GEORGE: Just as they wouldn't want the product or service they offer to be taken from them they shouldn't be taking other people's software. You really can't say anything beyond that--at that level. That's not even a creativity issue. It's just basic business ethics.
HATTIE: Why do you think people do it? Steal software -- I mean adults who are trying to run a business?
GEORGE: Probably because it's easy to do.
MARK: As an adult, if you're running a business, ask yourself when you do something, would I want my mother and father to know what I am doing. Or, as a parent, can I go home at night and tell my kids what I did today? Am I proud of it? In terms of intellectual property as well, if you can't, I suggest you don't do it. If you feel comfortable going home and saying to your kids, what did I do today? Well, I stole a couple things from Microsoft and I took some stuff from Oracle. Stole a movie or two. You don't want to go home and tell your kids. You don't want to tell your spouse. You don't want to tell your parents.
MAGGIE: As a matter of fact, many small business owners are unaware. They do not know that they are using pirated software. Which is why I said earlier, one of the key pillars is to educate as much as possible. Microsoft has a new program called The Windows Genuine Advantage which is all about providing small business customers with tools to determine if they have genuine software or not. It is a "how to tell" program.

MAGGIE: Piracy is not just a phenomena in undeveloped markets. It is actually a problem in our home market in the United States.
HATTIE: (Voiceover) Maggie Sanchez is Microsoft's General Manager for the Windows client business in the U.S.
MAGGIE: Software piracy is really about misuse at the end of the day. It's the perfect word to encapsulate what software piracy is. It's about the illegal sale and distribution of software. The piracy problem in small business is actually larger than the broader piracy problem across all business segments. It is approximately 1 in 5 of all PCs are pirated and for small business it is slightly higher than that. So it is a very significant problem.
GEORGE: Just as they wouldn't want the product or service they offer to be taken from them they shouldn't be taking other people's software. You really can't say anything beyond that--at that level. That's not even a creativity issue. It's just basic business ethics.
HATTIE: Why do you think people do it? Steal software -- I mean adults who are trying to run a business?
GEORGE: Probably because it's easy to do.
MARK: As an adult, if you're running a business, ask yourself when you do something, would I want my mother and father to know what I am doing. Or, as a parent, can I go home at night and tell my kids what I did today? Am I proud of it? In terms of intellectual property as well, if you can't, I suggest you don't do it. If you feel comfortable going home and saying to your kids, what did I do today? Well, I stole a couple things from Microsoft and I took some stuff from Oracle. Stole a movie or two. You don't want to go home and tell your kids. You don't want to tell your spouse. You don't want to tell your parents.
MAGGIE: As a matter of fact, many small business owners are unaware. They do not know that they are using pirated software. Which is why I said earlier, one of the key pillars is to educate as much as possible. Microsoft has a new program called The Windows Genuine Advantage which is all about providing small business customers with tools to determine if they have genuine software or not. It is a "how to tell" program.

AT&T; reported that only 3 percent of its iPhone-installed base was using 40 percent of the bandwidth being consumed by iPhones on its network. Verizon CEO predicts wireless devices will grow from 1 Billion devices to 10 Billion in a matter of 5 years. By 2014 CEA Projects U.S. consumers will purchase nearly 30 million internet-connected TVs and the worldwide figure will reach upwards of 185 Million.
The infrastructure is getting maxed due to greater/accelerated use of the network for live video, videos streaming, and general growth of smart phones. The devices that attach to the internet are growing exponentially. And what we do with these devices is changing and requiring more bandwidth than ever before.
Andrew Seybold, is the mobile wireless industry's trusted resource for strategic consulting, research, and analysis and will be addressing the issue of bandwidth limitations on February 16th at the Cabrillo Arts Pavilion on behalf of the MIT Central Coast Forum.
