TA Associates

TA Associates, founded in 1968, is one of early modern-era private equity firms in the United States. The firm leads buyouts and minority recapitalizations of profitable growth companies. TA Associates has invested across a range of industries, including technology, healthcare, consumer products, financial services and business services.

TA Associates has raised $18 billion of capital since inception. Since its founding, the firm has been a lead investor and director in more than 440 companies, and been ranked among the 50 largest private equity firms (ranked 41 in 2014) globally.

The firm is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. As of January 1, 2015, TA had more than 130 employees, including 80 investment professionals in Boston, Menlo Park, London, Mumbai and Hong Kong.

History

TA Associates was founded in 1968 by Peter Brooke with the backing of his former firm, Tucker, Anthony & RL Day, an investment banking and brokerage firm. Prior to founding TA, from 1963 to 1968, Brooke had headed the corporate finance and venture capital activities of Tucker Anthony. Previously, Brooke had been responsible for expanding the private equity activities of Bessemer Securities and had founded the High Technology Lending Group of First National Bank of Boston. At the time it was founded, the firm focused primarily on making venture capital investments in earlier stage companies.

Old Mutual

Old Mutual plc is an international investment, savings, insurance, and banking group. Established in 1845 in South Africa, it is now a FTSE100 listed company and has more than 16 million customers and £293.8bn assets under management.

History

The company was founded 1845 as a mutual insurance company by John Fairbairn, together with several other prominent Cape Town figures such as the liberal politician Saul Solomon. The original name The Mutual Life Assurance Society of the Cape of Good Hope was changed to The South Africa Mutual Life Assurance Society in 1885.

In 1939, the Old Mutual art deco office opened in Darling Street as the Mutual Building (or, Mutual Gebou in Afrikaans) which has since been converted to residential use and known as "Mutual Heights". In 1956 Old Mutual relocated its Head Office to Mutualpark in Pinelands which was the largest office block in the southern hemisphere at the time.

In 1970, Old Mutual acquired a major shareholding in the newly formed Mutual & Federal, and later acquiring the remaining shares in 2010.

Goldman Sachs

The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. is an American multinational investment banking firm that engages in global investment banking, securities, investment management, and other financial services primarily with institutional clients.

Goldman Sachs was founded in 1869 and is headquartered at 200 West Street in the Lower Manhattan area of New York City, with additional offices in international financial centers. The firm provides mergers and acquisitions advice, underwriting services, asset management, and prime brokerage to its clients, which include corporations, governments and individuals. The firm also engages in market making and private equity deals, and is a primary dealer in the United States Treasury security market.

Goldman Sachs was hit hard by the 2008 economic crisis, because of its involvement in subprime mortgages, and was subsequently rescued as part of a massive U.S. government bailout.

Former Goldman executives who moved on to government positions include: Robert Rubin and Henry Paulson who served as United States Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, respectively; Mario Draghi, President of the European Central Bank; Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of Canada 2008–13 and Governor of the Bank of England from July 2013 and Malcolm Turnbull, Prime Minister of Australia.

Count Fleet

Count Fleet (March 24, 1940 – December 3, 1973) was an American thoroughbred racehorse. He was the Triple Crown champion in 1943.

Background

Count Fleet was foaled at Stoner Creek Stud farm in Paris, Kentucky in 1928. He was by Kentucky Derby winner Reigh Count out of a mare named Quickly, by Haste. Count Fleet was owned by the wife of John D. Hertz (1879–1961), best known for the rental car company bearing his name. John Hertz initially did not think much of Count Fleet and contemplated selling him until jockey Johnny Longden convinced him to keep the colt. Count Fleet was trained by Don Cameron and ridden by future Hall of Fame inductee Longden.

Racing record

As a two-year-old Count Fleet started off slowly, losing several times before getting his first win. He gained respect with his six-length victory in the Champagne Stakes, in which he set a new track record, then followed this up by beating the best horses in the country in the Pimlico Futurity, where he equaled the track record. In the Walden Stakes, he ran away from the field, winning by more than thirty lengths. At season's end, he had won 10 of his 15 races while never being out of the money, a performance that earned him the two-year-old championship honors. He was assigned 132 lbs. on the 1942 Experimental Free Handicap, the highest impost ever.
