The Benz Patent-Motorwagen (or motorcar), built in 1886, is widely regarded as the world's first automobile; that is, a vehicle designed to be propelled by an internal combustion engine. The original cost of the vehicle in 1885 was $1,000 (equivalent to $26,337 in 2016).
The vehicle was awarded the German patent, number 37435, for which Karl Benz applied on January 29, 1886. Following official procedures, the date of the application became the patent date for the invention once the patent was granted, which occurred in November of that year.
Although Benz's wife, Bertha, financed the development process, and would hold patent rights under modern law, as a married woman she was not allowed to apply for the patent.
Benz officially unveiled his invention to the public on July 3, 1886, on the Ringstrasse (Ringstraße) in Mannheim.
About 25 Patent Motorwagens were built between 1886 and 1893.
After developing a successful gasoline-powered two-stroke piston engine in 1873, Benz focused on developing a motorized vehicle while maintaining a career as a designer and manufacturer of stationary engines and their associated parts.

Karl Benz applied for a patent for this vehicle (the first with an internal combustion engine) on January 29, 1886. It had a horizontal single cylinder, four-stroke 954cc engine developing 0.75 HP at 400 rpm. It weighs 584 pounds and achieved 24 mpg. The one and only original can be found at the German Museum in Münich, Germany. This replica sold for $37,950 on April, 4th, 2013 at the Barrett-Jackson West Palm Beach auction. Mercedes-Benz traces its origins to Karl Benz's creation of the first petrol-powered car, the Benz Patent Motorwagen, financed by Bertha Benz[4] and patented in January 1886,[5] and Gottlieb Daimler and engineer Wilhelm Maybach's conversion of a stagecoach by the addition of a petrol engine later that year. Years later they took their original creation out for a test drive. Others believe that Siegfried Marcus, a German born, Austrian-Hungarian inventor was the first to use a gasoline engine in a car. They contend that Adolf Hitler had the records changed because Marcus was Jewish. Others say that Josef Ganz, who also was Jewish, invented the VW Beetle and was pushed aside by Porsche. S209

The history of the automobile begins as early as 1769, with the creation of steam engined automobiles capable of human transport. In 1807, François Isaac de Rivaz designed the first car powered by an internal combustion engine running on fuel gas (hydrogen and oxygen), which -- although not in itself successful -- led to the introduction of the ubiquitous modern gasoline- or petrol-fueled internal combustion engine in 1885. The year 1886 is regarded the year of birth of the modern automobile - with the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, by German inventor Karl Benz. This video is targeted to blind users. The first Mercedes-Benz brand name vehicles were produced in 1926, following the merger of Karl Benz's and Gottlieb Daimler's companies into the Daimler-Benz company. Throughout the 1930s, Mercedes-Benz produced the 770 model, a car that was popular during Germany's Nazi period.
