STORYLINE:
Around 200 South Korean and US marines took part in annual winter military exercises on Thursday in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
The training, which began on 19 January, aims to improve the marines' abilities to survive in intense cold whilst in a combat situation.
In Thursday's session, South Korean and US soldiers participated in firing drills and also ran across the snow bare chested.
The winter exercises also include downhill ski runs, tactical manoeuveres using nordic skis, snowshoes and climbing irons and rappelling training.
During the training period, the troops camp outside and take part in day and night exercises.
The exercises come amid heightened tensions in the region after North Korea's fourth nuclear test earlier this month.

The outgoing head of UNIFIL, Major-General Luciano Portolano, has stressed the importance of continuing close engagement and relations with the local population and the authorities for successful implementation of the UN Mission’s mandate.
“Operationally I define the relationship with the local population as my center of gravity,” he said in a recent interview. “It means an element that, if it exists, might lead to success; if it doesn’t exist it will lead, for sure, to complete disruption of the Mission.”
Major-General Portolano added: “So the link between the UNIFIL members and the local population is the most important element I recommend for the future leadership to take into consideration.”
The Italian General is leaving UNIFIL next week after leading the UN peacekeeping operation for two years. The UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander is handing over the command to Major-General Michael Beary of Ireland.
Major-General Portolano has had extensive experience with multinational operations, having served as a commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), as well as in Iraq, Kosovo, and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. With the United Nations, he served as a Military Observer in the Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission and the Iran-Iraq Observation Group. He was also Military Attaché at the Italian Embassy in the United Kingdom and he served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Joint Operations in the Italian Armed Forces.
In his final interview to UNIFIL media, Major-General Portolano listed a wide range of accomplishments achieved during his two years at the helm of the UN peacekeeping mission, commanding more than 10,500 troops from 40 countries and nearly 1,000 civilian personnel.
“I arrived here in UNIFIL area of responsibility on the 24 of July 2014 when the war in Syria was ongoing and all the region was characterized by very heavy destabilization,” he said. “So the major highlight I think is that in the two years I was responsible for leading this fantastic UNIFIL mission as the Head of Mission and Force Commander was to maintain the southern part of Lebanon, which is our area of responsibility and our maritime area of responsibility, as one of the most stable areas - not only in Lebanon but in all the Middle East.”
But the role was not without challenges. The outgoing UNIFIL Force Commander contextualized these and also explained how the Mission was able to maintain a notable calm.
“The challenges were all the possible spillovers from the situation in the region and all the spillover from the Syrian conflict in terms of refugees and in terms of possible sleeping cells, and maintaining the integrity of the Blue Line when there was a strong tension between the parties. The solution was a little bit more complex, because in the south we have two Lebanese Armed Forces brigades deployed in order to maintain stability so we had to enforce the presence of UNIFIL on the ground. So we passed from an average of 250 operational activities per day to an average of 400 and sometimes even 500 operational activities per day on the ground, in the air and at sea.”

Република Македонија , tr. Republika Makedonija), is a country located in the central Balkan peninsula in Southeast Europe. It is one of the successor states of the former Yugoslavia, from which it declared independence in 1991. It became a member of the United Nations in 1993, but, as a result of an ongoing dispute with Greece over use of the name Macedonia, it was admitted under the provisional description of "the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" (Поранешна Југословенска Република Македонија, tr. Poranešna Jugoslovenska Republika Makedonija), abbreviated as FYROM.
A landlocked country, the Republic of Macedonia is bordered by Kosovo to the northwest, Serbia to the north, Bulgaria to the east, Greece to the south, and Albania to the west. It constitutes approximately the northwestern third of the larger geographical region of Macedonia, which also comprises the neighbouring parts of northern Greece and a smaller portion in southwestern Bulgaria. The country's capital is Skopje, with 506,926 inhabitants according to the 2002 census. Other cities include Bitola, Kumanovo, Prilep, Tetovo, Ohrid, Veles, Štip, Kočani, Gostivar, Kavadarci, and Strumica. It has over 50 lakes, plus sixteen mountains higher than 2,000 m (6,562 ft). Macedonia is a member of the UN and of the Council of Europe. Since December 2005 it has also been a candidate for joining the European Union and has applied for NATO membership.

STORYLINE:
Around 200 South Korean and US marines took part in annual winter military exercises on Thursday in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
The training, which began on 19 January, aims to improve the marines' abilities to survive in intense cold whilst in a combat situation.
In Thursday's session, South Korean and US soldiers participated in firing drills and also ran across the snow bare chested.
The winter exercises also include downhill ski runs, tactical manoeuveres using nordic skis, snowshoes and climbing irons and rappelling training.
During the training period, the troops camp outside and take part in day and night exercises.
The exercises come amid heightened tensions in the region after North Korea's fourth nuclear test earlier this month.

The outgoing head of UNIFIL, Major-General Luciano Portolano, has stressed the importance of continuing close engagement and relations with the local population and the authorities for successful implementation of the UN Mission’s mandate.
“Operationally I define the relationship with the local population as my center of gravity,” he said in a recent interview. “It means an element that, if it exists, might lead to success; if it doesn’t exist it will lead, for sure, to complete disruption of the Mission.”
Major-General Portolano added: “So the link between the UNIFIL members and the local population is the most important element I recommend for the future leadership to take into consideration.”
The Italian General is leaving UNIFIL next week after leading the UN peacekeeping operation for two years. The UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander is handing over the command to Major-General Michael Beary of Ireland.
Major-General Portolano has had extensive experience with multinational operations, having served as a commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), as well as in Iraq, Kosovo, and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. With the United Nations, he served as a Military Observer in the Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission and the Iran-Iraq Observation Group. He was also Military Attaché at the Italian Embassy in the United Kingdom and he served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Joint Operations in the Italian Armed Forces.
In his final interview to UNIFIL media, Major-General Portolano listed a wide range of accomplishments achieved during his two years at the helm of the UN peacekeeping mission, commanding more than 10,500 troops from 40 countries and nearly 1,000 civilian personnel.
“I arrived here in UNIFIL area of responsibility on the 24 of July 2014 when the war in Syria was ongoing and all the region was characterized by very heavy destabilization,” he said. “So the major highlight I think is that in the two years I was responsible for leading this fantastic UNIFIL mission as the Head of Mission and Force Commander was to maintain the southern part of Lebanon, which is our area of responsibility and our maritime area of responsibility, as one of the most stable areas - not only in Lebanon but in all the Middle East.”
But the role was not without challenges. The outgoing UNIFIL Force Commander contextualized these and also explained how the Mission was able to maintain a notable calm.
“The challenges were all the possible spillovers from the situation in the region and all the spillover from the Syrian conflict in terms of refugees and in terms of possible sleeping cells, and maintaining the integrity of the Blue Line when there was a strong tension between the parties. The solution was a little bit more complex, because in the south we have two Lebanese Armed Forces brigades deployed in order to maintain stability so we had to enforce the presence of UNIFIL on the ground. So we passed from an average of 250 operational activities per day to an average of 400 and sometimes even 500 operational activities per day on the ground, in the air and at sea.”

In his address to the public, he announced that he had decided not to give the mandate for forming a government to Zoran Zaev.
Ivanov in his address said that he had meetings with Zoran Zaev, and that the condition for having a parliament majority was fulfilled, as well as the condition for respecting the deadlines, i.e. the President deciding in ten days to whom to give the mandate for forming a government.
Yet, Ivanov emphasized that there was other, more substantial issue, and that is the appearance of a so-called platform that the Albanian parties presented, and which was created in Tirana, with the mediation of the Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama.
- There is a more substantial issue. After the elections we were unpleasantly surprised by a post-electoral political platform by a foreign country. The platform is a post-electoral document, made and signed in a foreign country, in the cabinet of a foreign official, and with the mediation of a Prime Minister of a foreign country. The content of the platform is out of the range of the Constitution, and of the Ohrid Framework Agreement. With this platform, the sovereignty, and the independence of the country are endangered, putting it into a submissive position towards another country - Ivanov said.
He added that the process of forming a government in this country has become captive of the platform of a foreign country.
- The foundations of the Macedonian country have been brought into question. I had expected that the political leaders would categorically reject it, but some of them started auctioning with it, not knowing subconsciously that, thus, they hold an auction with the country - said Ivanov.
He said that the people have the right to know the truth of the content of the conversations regarding the platform.
- I publicly asked Zoran Zaev to reject this platform. The second essential remark comes from here, that the the negotiations for a platform of a foreign country is contrary to the Constitution of the Republic of Macedonia. At the same time, accepting the foreign platform is a punishable act - Ivanov said.
He added that he expected the international community to condemn the interfering of the foreign country.
- Unfortunately, in Macedonia's case, there was no such public condemnation. That loud silence shows us that Macedonia's future depends on its institutions. My message is clear now, the international community should refrain itself from imposing solutions contrary to the state interests of Macedonia - Ivanov said.
He pointed out that in Macedonia the sovereignty comes from the people, and belongs to the people.
- Nobody has the right to endanger Macedonia's sovereignty by accepting a foreign platform. The people voted for parties' programs, and not for a platform of a foreign country.
- Every wrong decision can have catastrophic consequences for the future of the country. I swore that I would protect the sovereignty, the territorial integrity of Macedonia. Thus, even the conscience does not allow me to give the mandate to any one who would destroy the sovereignty of Republic of Macedonia - Ivanov said.

Doing Business presents quantitative indicators on business regulations and the protection of property rights that can be compared across 189 economies.
Doing Business measures regulations affecting 11 areas of the life of a business. Ten of these areas are included in this year’s ranking on the ease of doing business: starting a business, dealing with construction permits, getting electricity, registering property, getting credit, protecting minority investors, paying taxes, trading across borders, enforcing contracts and resolving insolvency. Doing Business also measures labor market regulation, which is not included in this year’s ranking.
Data in Doing Business 2016 are current as of June 1, 2015. The indicators are used to analyze economic outcomes and identify what reforms of business regulation have worked, where and why. This year’s Doing Business report continues a two-year process of introducing improvements in 8 of 10 Doing Business indicator sets—to complement the emphasis on the efficiency of regulation with a greater focus on its quality.

Taiwan is bracing itself for the worst as Macedonia remains on the verge of severing their diplomatic relations in favour of re-establishing ties with China, which promises to support Macedonia in its fight against ethnic Albanian rebels.
Skopje was due to cut ties officially at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday - but the decision was stalled due to a full agenda.
Taiwan said on Monday that it hoped it could maintain diplomatic relations, but their outlook was pessimistic.
Macedonian officials say they want to continue doing business with Taiwan and keep diplomatic ties with China, but Taiwan has refused.
At the Taiwanese stands at the industrial fair in Skopje the message was 'forget about politics and let's get down to business'.
And convinced that economic interests may carry more weight for both countries, Taiwanese businessmen were optimistic in their outlook.
Skopje switched its diplomatic recognition from Beijing to Taipei in January, 1999 in return for an investment package worth 300 (m) million US dollars in cash and more than one (b) billion US dollars over a longer period - little of which has been received.
Taipei has been hoping that ties with Skopje would open a gateway to Europe, where Macedonia and the Vatican are the nation's only allies.
China reacted to the package by vetoing the mandate of a UN peacekeeping force to Macedonia in a UN Security Council vote.
Macedonia's newly formed coalition government has recently portrayed the setting up of formal ties with Taiwan as "a mistake".
As it faces a continuing ethnic crisis domestically, Macedonia needs all the support it can get from major world powers, especially those on the UN Security Council.
Apart from the Vatican, Macedonia is the only European state to recognise Taiwan, which Beijing regards as a part of its territory awaiting reunification.

China reacted to the package by vetoing the mandate of a UN peacekeeping force to Macedonia in a UN Security Council vote.
Macedonia's newly formed coalition government has recently portrayed the setting up of formal ties with Taiwan as "a mistake".
As it faces a continuing ethnic crisis domestically, Macedonia needs all the support it can get from major world powers, especially those on the UN Security Council.
Apart from the Vatican, Macedonia is the only European state to recognise Taiwan, which Beijing regards as a part of its territory awaiting reunification.

Earlier this year David had the opportunity to explore Macedonia and explore what to see in and around Skopje. In this episode, David shows us around this eastern European capital.
Skopje is Macedonia’s cultural, economic and political hub. It’s not the most popular European city but can be quite fascinating for those who can appreciate its centuries-old history and multi-cultural traditions.
The Kale Fortress is a perfect example of Macedonia’s long history at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. The fortress has stood watch over the city since the 6th century. From its walls you’ll get sweeping views of Skopje.
Next stop: the Old Bazaar. A must when in Skopje is to browse the shops and cobblestone streets of the Old Bazaar. The neighborhood is full of mosques and hammams like the one David visits in this episode.
As you keep exploring the Old Bazaar you’ll find several shops, cafes, and old inns.
By contrast, the Art Bridge represents modern Skopje. It is lined with statues of famous Macedonian artists and musicians leading up to the National Archaeology Museum.
The Stone Bridge is another pedestrian bridge that crosses the Varnar River, linking the old and new parts of the city. Originally constructed under Roman Emperor Justinian, it was rebuilt in the 15th century by the Ottomans.
On one side of the bridge is the Old Bazaar and on the other is Skopje’s central square AKA Macedonia Square.
If you’re looking to buy something authentically Macedonian and don’t want a cheap souvenir, buy a Macedonian ruby. These precious gemstones aren’t red like Asian or Indian rubies. Instead they are raspberry-pink and make very unique gifts.
Next up is the Mother Teresa Memorial House – a museum, chapel and multimedia center honoring the late Mother Teresa, who was born in Skopje in 1910. It was built in 2009 two years after her death. Here you’ll see memorabilia and photos from her life and humanitarian work.
Afterwards, David heads to the surroundings of Skopje. First up is the Skopje Aqueduct, just 3 kilometers from the center of Skopje. It was first built by the Romans and used by the Byzantines and Ottomans to supply the city with water from the neighboring mountains. Today, 56 arches remain.
A half-hour drive south brings David and his cinematographer to the Byzantine Church of Saint Panteleimon. What is most impressive is what church holds inside – dozens of religious frescos depicting the life and death of Jesus. David gives us a peak at the most famous of its frescoes.
A 30-minute drive southwest of the church brings the crew to Canyon Matka, a natural gorge that is popular with climbers, hikers, and nature lovers. Rent a boat to see Vrelo Cave, one of 10 caves found in Matka. When you’re done you can stick around to have lunch at the Canyon Matka Restaurant.
Skopje isn’t your typical European capital. It is currently experiencing an urban revival thanks to government-funded building projects across the city.
If time allows, dedicate a couple of days to explore what to see in and around Skopje.

Kruševo is a small but picturesque town. Located in South-Western Macedonia, Kruševo is situated at an altitude of 1350 m and in this way the highest town in the Balkans. The chance guest will not be wrong if they stayle Kruševo as a museum of old architecture. The town is full of old and more recent houses built in the style of old Macedonian architecture.
Each year on Ilinden day, the town wears a festival look. On the balconies and at the windows of all the houses shaggy hand woven blankets (jambolii) in all kinds of colours are exhibited. Kruševo proudly preserves the memory of the renowned Ilinden Uprising of the Macedonian people on 2nd August, 1903. In this town, the Ilinden insurrectionists established the Kruševo Republic which only ten days later was suppressed in blood by the Turks.
The "Makedonium" monument of the Ilinden Uprising is to be found in Kruševo. There are also a number of museums of the Ilinden Uprising, a Gallery of 19th century icons, and a memorial gallery to the master of modern Macedonian painting, Nikola Martinovski, who was born in this town.
A few kilometres away from the town is the historical site of Mečkin Kamen, where the Ilinden insurrectionists fought the decisive battle against the Ottoman army. In the surrounding's there is also an artificial lake, and Kruševo continues to be a well known centre and a climatic health resort.

The final conference marking the finalization of the EU-funded project 'Strengthening the Blood Safety System in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia' has taken place on June 18th in Skopje, Macedonia. The project was implemented by the ECG-led Consortium in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Institute for Transfusion Medicine, funded by the EU.
The main objective of project was to promote quality, efficient and continuous health care of all the citizens through providing safety of blood and blood components to protect them from infectious diseases. In order to achieve these objectives, the project has organized numerous training and study visits for 225 employees at the Institute for Transfusion Medicine.

One of the city’s most well-preserved mosques is that of the Gazi-Isisa-Bey Djamia and in the seventeenth century it is believed that there were up to a hundred and twenty mosques in the city. Ottoman rule began in 1392 and lasted for more than five hundred years. Near the village of Glumovo is the Bogorodica Monastery that was founded in the fourteenth century and is active again today. The mediaeval frescos on the walls and ceilings are well preserved after five centuries. Southwest of Prilep is the ancient city of Stibera that is also known as Macedonian Pompeii. It is in a good location on an important road. The last Macedonian king, Perseus, had his military headquarters in Stibera during his struggles with Rome. In the south, just a few kilometres from the Greek border, is Bitola, at the foot of Pelister Mountain and on the edge of the fertile Pelagonija Plains. Buildings with Neo-Baroque and Renaissance facades, huge mosques and splendid diplomatic residences indicate the city’s importance. Macedonia is a wild land full of natural splendour and with a long and dramatic history that is well worth more than just a flying visit. Indeed, this visit also features a Galička wedding that is a fine example of colourful tradition and local culture.

Continuing on with my Balkan voyage brings me to my last and final former republic of the former Yugoslavia. From Prishtina, Kosovo, I arrived in the capital city of Skopje. Skopje is an interesting city due to the two sides that are complete opposites. In the east of the river, you have the old town Bazaar which resembles a little Istanbul, with many small cafes and mosques. Crossing the old stone bridge to the other side of the river, is the new side. Skopje 2014 was a massive makeover for this city, and now many monuments, statues, and new/renovated buildings stand in the old square and around the city. While the makeover is not accepted by many Macedonians, it certainly has brought a new personality to the center, and it's quite interesting.
Skopje, next to Athens and Podgorica was one of the hottest cities I've been to on my European voyage. Fortunatly, the nearby Matka Canyon was the means to cool off in the shade as well as in the COLD COLD COLD river. In this canyon, you can rent kayaks as well as take boat tours down the canyon. For me, I was good enough with a nice walk along the path down the canyon. In the end, it was definitely the place to cool off.
On my travel day, I was initially going to catch a bus to avoid the heat. And I was persuaded not to. But last minute, I hit the edge of the city, and found a ride to Tetovo and another to my desired stop, Mavrovo National Park. This is a massive park in the west of the country bordering Albania with many beautiful lakes, mountains, valleys, and villages. I was lucky enough to catch a ride with a Dutch couple going to Ohrid and also lucky enough to join them on a journey finding a waterfall. In the process, we picked up a villager who was kind enough to all the way to the waterfall, Duf Falls. After we were greeted and wished a great journey away, we stopped for a beer and enjoyed more view of the mountains before parting ways in Ohrid and being welcomed into my Airbnb.
In Ohrid, I was extremely lucky to have one of the most budget friendly but valued Airbnb's to date. I had a full kitchen and dining room on one floor with a bed room and terrace on the second floor with a pretty nice view of the lake for only 20 Euros. What a steal. As for my time in this region, due to the heat and the long day before, I simply enjoyed roaming around town and skipped the boat excursion across the lake. I enjoyed my last meal of Cevapi, walked the waterfront, walked through the town, up Samuel's Fortress for panoramic views of Mavrovo, the town, the Lake, the Albanian border and beyond. And to end the day just right, I enjoyed the picturesque view of St Johns church over the lake and enjoyed a nice sunset swim in the lake to cool off after a week of extreme hot weather.
To wrap up my time in the former Yugoslavia, I finally caught a short ride in a Yugo and hitchhiked my way to the Albanian border to Tirana.
I not only had the pleasure of spending a memorable time in Macedonia but a pleasure of befriending many incredible people. :)

Macedonia is a member of the UN and the Council of Europe. Since December 2005 it has also been a candidate for joining the European Union and has applied for NATO membership.

Highest is the temperature of the water in Banjsko (73ºC), then in Istibanja (55ºC), Kežovica (54ºC), Katlanovo (40.5ºC), Debar (38.6ºC), Negorci (38ºC), Kumanovo (31ºC).

The territory of the country is characterized by high geothermal activity, mostly with low-enthalpy geothermal energy. The country is situated along the very favourable geothermal zone that starts in Hungary to the North and Italy to the West and stretches through Greece down to Turkey. However, there has not been a systematic measurement of terrestrial heat flow neither organised use of the natural resource for medical/tourist purposes. Even with a long tradition in medical use of thermal waters, the country has a limited number of active thermal spas. It is evident from the potential of the thermal resources that the approach to this economy sector should be changed in order to reach possible benefits.

The mediaeval frescos on the walls and ceilings are well preserved after five centuries. Southwest of Prilep is the ancient city of Stibera that is also known as Macedonian Pompeii. It is in a good location on an important road. The last Macedonian king, Perseus, had his military headquarters in Stibera during his struggles with Rome. In the south, just a few kilometres from the Greek border, is Bitola, at the foot of Pelister Mountain and on the edge of the fertile Pelagonija Plains. Buildings with Neo-Baroque and Renaissance facades, huge mosques and splendid diplomatic residences indicate the city’s importance. Macedonia is a wild land full of natural splendour and with a long and dramatic history that is well worth more than just a flying visit. Indeed, this visit also features a Galička wedding that is a fine example of colourful tradition and local culture.

Continuing on with my Balkan voyage brings me to my last and final former republic of the former Yugoslavia. From Prishtina, Kosovo, I arrived in the capital city of Skopje. Skopje is an interesting city due to the two sides that are complete opposites. In the east of the river, you have the old town Bazaar which resembles a little Istanbul, with many small cafes and mosques. Crossing the old stone bridge to the other side of the river, is the new side. Skopje 2014 was a massive makeover for this city, and now many monuments, statues, and new/renovated buildings stand in the old square and around the city. While the makeover is not accepted by many Macedonians, it certainly has brought a new personality to the center, and it's quite interesting.
Skopje, next to Athens and Podgorica was one of the hottest cities I've been to on my European voyage. Fortunatly, the nearby Matka Canyon was the means to cool off in the shade as well as in the COLD COLD COLD river. In this canyon, you can rent kayaks as well as take boat tours down the canyon. For me, I was good enough with a nice walk along the path down the canyon. In the end, it was definitely the place to cool off.
On my travel day, I was initially going to catch a bus to avoid the heat. And I was persuaded not to. But last minute, I hit the edge of the city, and found a ride to Tetovo and another to my desired stop, Mavrovo National Park. This is a massive park in the west of the country bordering Albania with many beautiful lakes, mountains, valleys, and villages. I was lucky enough to catch a ride with a Dutch couple going to Ohrid and also lucky enough to join them on a journey finding a waterfall. In the process, we picked up a villager who was kind enough to all the way to the waterfall, Duf Falls. After we were greeted and wished a great journey away, we stopped for a beer and enjoyed more view of the mountains before parting ways in Ohrid and being welcomed into my Airbnb.
In Ohrid, I was extremely lucky to have one of the most budget friendly but valued Airbnb's to date. I had a full kitchen and dining room on one floor with a bed room and terrace on the second floor with a pretty nice view of the lake for only 20 Euros. What a steal. As for my time in this region, due to the heat and the long day before, I simply enjoyed roaming around town and skipped the boat excursion across the lake. I enjoyed my last meal of Cevapi, walked the waterfront, walked through the town, up Samuel's Fortress for panoramic views of Mavrovo, the town, the Lake, the Albanian border and beyond. And to end the day just right, I enjoyed the picturesque view of St Johns church over the lake and enjoyed a nice sunset swim in the lake to cool off after a week of extreme hot weather.
To wrap up my time in the former Yugoslavia, I finally caught a short ride in a Yugo and hitchhiked my way to the Albanian border to Tirana.
I not only had the pleasure of spending a memorable time in Macedonia but a pleasure of befriending many incredible people. :)

To wrap up my time in the former Yugoslavia, I finally caught a short ride in a Yugo and hitchhiked my way to the Albanian border to Tirana.
I not only had the pleasure of spending a memorable time in Macedonia but a pleasure of befriending many incredible people. :)

Skopje is the capital of Macedonia and is located in the valley of the Vardar River with a dramatic history that spans many thousands of years. It forms the junction of two trading routes in southeast Europe that unites both western and eastern civilisation. The legacy of Ottoman times is omnipresent in Skopje. One of the city’s most well-preserved mosques is that of the Gazi-Isisa-Bey Djamia. In the seventeenth century it is believed that there were up to a hundred and twenty mosques in Skopje. Between the city’s mosques is the last surviving monastery in the centre of Skopje, Sveti Spas, with a fine church and wooden bell tower. Both monastery and church were built before the time of the Ottomans and eventually they had to be reduced in size because no other religious building was allowed to be larger than a mosque. The historic stone bridge of Kameni Most spans the river Vardar and unites two city districts and also the Muslim world with that of the Christian Orthodox. The massive two hundred and fourteen metre long stone bridge was built in the late fifteenth century under the rule of Sultan Mehmet the Second. In Ottoman times the bridge was a place of execution where rebels were executed in public. Skopje has become a symbol of fraternity and solidarity. A prospering city at the south-eastern end of the world!
