Hesiod (/ˈhiːsiəd/ or /ˈhɛsiəd/;Greek: Ἡσίοδος Hēsíodos) was a Greek poet generally thought by scholars to have been active between 750 and 650 BC, around the same time as Homer. He is generally regarded as the first written poet in the Western tradition to regard himself as individual persona with an active role to play in his subject. Ancient authors credited Hesiod and Homer with establishing Greek religious customs. Modern scholars refer to him as a major source on Greek mythology, farming techniques, early economic thought (he is sometimes considered history's first economist), archaic Greek astronomy and ancient time-keeping.
The dating of his life is a contested issue in scholarly circles and it is covered below in Dating. Epic narrative allowed poets like Homer no opportunity for personal revelations. However, Hesiod's extant work comprises didactic poems in which he went out of his way to let his audience in on a few details of his life. There are three explicit references in Works and Days, as well as some passages in his Theogony that support inferences made by scholars. We learn in the former poem that his father came from Cyme in Aeolis (on the coast of Asia Minor, a little south of the island Lesbos), and crossed the sea to settle at a hamlet, near Thespiae in Boeotia, named Ascra, "a cursed place, cruel in winter, hard in summer, never pleasant" (Works, l. 640). Hesiod's patrimony there, a small piece of ground at the foot of Mount Helicon, occasioned lawsuits with his brother Perses, who seems at first to have cheated him of his rightful share thanks to corrupt authorities or "kings" but later became impoverished and ended up scrounging on the thrifty poet (Works l. 35, 396).

With Pandora, I have converted a passage from Hesiod’s poem into a hybridized system of analog dot matrix print and musical notation. By hole punching letterforms onto a musical staff, I can then play the text as chords through a hand-cranked music box. Not only does this transcoding of the original form induce new meaning, its narrative musicality echoes the original role that the Chorus played in ancient Greek theater.
Titans is a 3D short animation completely realised by me. It is inspired by the "Theogony" a poem written by Hesiod (8th – 7th century BC), narrating the genealogy of the gods. Titans represents through visionary and surrealistic environments the three primary events of the poem, from the Chaos to the kingdom of Cronus till the coronation of Zeus as king of the gods.

PANDORA, a modern dance piece inspired by the Greek myth of Pandora’s Box, includes inspiration from poses on ancient Greek Pottery, Physical Theater Movement and flowing lyrical movement. According to Ancient Greek Scholars, the Greek myth of Pandora, as we know it today, was not an original Greek Myth, but actually written by Hesiod, a Greek Poet, between 750 and 650 BC, to address the question of why there is evil in the world. Hesiod's story is significant because according to Jane Ellen Harrison, a British classical scholar, linguist and feminist, it is "evidence of a shift from matriarchy to patriarchy in Greek culture. As the life-bringing goddess Pandora is eclipsed, the death-bringing human Pandora arises." Before the Hesoidic writings, Pandora took on aspects of Gaea and De...
music by Lucas Thanos photographs and images of the planet Uranus Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun. It has the third-largest planetary radius and fourth-largest planetary mass in the Solar System. Uranus is similar in composition to Neptune, and both have different bulk chemical composition from that of the larger gas giants Jupiter and Saturn. For this reason, scientists often classify Uranus and Neptune as "ice giants" to distinguish them from the gas giants. Uranus's atmosphere, although similar to Jupiter's and Saturn's in its primary composition of hydrogen and helium, contains more "ices", such as water, ammonia, and methane, along with traces of other hydrocarbons. It is the coldest planetary atmosphere in the Solar System, with a minimum temperature of 49 K (−224.2 °C), a...

Roman poets placed them on some small islands called Sirenum scopuli. In some later, rationalized traditions, the literal geography of the "flowery" island of Anthemoessa, or Anthemusa, is fixed: sometimes on Cape Pelorum and at others in the islands known as the Sirenuse, near Paestum, or in Capreae. All such locations were surrounded by cliffs and rocks. Although a Sophocles fragment makes Phorcys their father, when Sirens are named, they are usually as daughters of t...
