Leonard Cohen

Leonard Norman Cohen, CC GOQ (born 21 September 1934) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, musician, painter, poet, and novelist. His work has explored religion, politics, isolation, sexuality, and personal relationships. Cohen has been inducted into both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame as well as the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He is also a Companion of the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian honor. In 2011, Cohen received a Princess of Asturias Awards for literature.

The critic Bruce Eder assessed Cohen's overall career in popular music by asserting that "[he is] one of the most fascinating and enigmatic … singer/songwriters of the late '60s … [and] has retained an audience across four decades of music-making.... Second only to Bob Dylan (and perhaps Paul Simon) [in terms of influence], he commands the attention of critics and younger musicians more firmly than any other musical figure from the 1960s who is still working at the outset of the 21st century."

Cohen, Leonard Filmography

Cohen, Leonard Filmography

Famous quotes by Leonard Cohen:

"A woman watches her body uneasily, as though it were an unreliable ally in the battle for love."

"Prayer is translation. A man translates himself into a child asking for all there is in a language he has barely mastered."

"In dreams the truth is learned that all good works are done in the absence of a caress."

"I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm, your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy, golden storm, yes many loved before us, I know we are not new, in city and in forest they smiled like me and you, but now it's come to distances and both of us must try, your eyes are soft with sorrow, Hey, that's no way to say goodbye."

"I am an old scholar, better-looking now than when I was young. That's what sitting on your ass does to your face."

"The last refuge of the insomniac is a sense of superiority to the sleeping world."

"Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash."

"I don't consider myself a pessimist. I think of a pessimist as someone who is waiting for it to rain. And I feel soaked to the skin."

"Children show scars like medals. Lovers use them as secrets to reveal. A scar is what happens when the word is made flesh."

"Act the way you'd like to be and soon you'll be the way you act."

"I never really liked poetry readings; I liked to read poetry by myself, but I liked singing, chanting my lyrics to this jazz group."

"Out of the thousands who are known or who want to be known as poets, maybe one or two are genuine and the rest are fakes, hanging around the sacred precincts, trying to look like the real thing."

"I don't think you can write novels on the road. You need a certain stability."

"I always considered myself a minor writer. My province is small, and I try to explore it very, very thoroughly."

"I always felt I was scraping the bottom of the barrel trying to get a song together."

"I was 15 when I first became deeply touched by the rhythm and structure of words."

"I think the term poet is a very exalted term and should be applied to a man at the end of his work. When he looks back over the body of his work and he's written poetry then let the verdict be that he's a poet."

"I always thought that poetry is the verdict that others give to a certain kind of writing. So to call yourself a poet is a kind of dangerous description. It's for others; it's for others to use."

"We're always experiencing joy or sadness. But there are lots of people who've closed down. And there are times in one's life when one has to close down just to regroup."

Tracks 1-13 Recorded Spring 1968 at Paris Theatre, London Tracks 1-5 Broadcast August 31, 1968 on BBC2 TV (”Leonard Cohen Sings Leonard Cohen”) Tracks 6-13 Broadcast September 7, 1968 on BBC2 TV (”Leonard Cohen Sings Leonard Cohen”) Tracks 14-16 Recorded August 11, 1968 & Broadcast on BBC Radio 1 (”Top Gear with John Peel”) Track 17 Recorded January 27, 1968 & Broadcast on BBC2 TV (”Once More With Felix”) While Dylan was the transition point for protest music to move towards singer-songwriter, there were others too championing to focus on songs not politics. Canadian Leonard Cohen, with his brooding monotonous voice, was a talented poet who would never have won American Idol. But where he lacked a sweet voice, he made up for it with the intensity of his songs. Together with younger artists Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro and Paul Simon, singer-songwriters moved to make songwriting an art form. Their efforts were recognised when mainstream acts covered their songs. All this happened in the whirlpool that rock music was creating. These well-preserved sessions at the BBC in 1968 offer a fly-on-the-wall experience to witness a young Cohen singing practically the entire first album. The voice is fresh and deep, pushing the songs outside the Tin Pan Alley perimeter, and delving into poetry with a richness of words and subject. Today, they still have that raw appeal of a young artist at the peak of his powers. Suzanne, So Long Marianne and Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye are beautiful love songs without catchy hooks. They got your attention with words and the emotions in the song. Tagged to this 1968 session are three songs from a Top Gear show hosted by John Peel. The final track is a duet with British folk singer Julie Felix on Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye. The quality on these four tracks are still very good.

Leonard Cohen - Songs of Love and Hate [1971] Songs of Love and Hate is the third studio album by Canadian singer - songwriter Leonard Cohen. Produced by Bob Johnston, the album was released on March 19, 1971, through Columbia Records. Cohen reunited with producer Bob Johnston, who was at the helm for the singer's previous album Songs From a Room, and also brought back guitarist Ron Cornelius, who acted as leader of Cohen's new crew of backing musicians, christened The Army. The album was mainly recorded in Columbia Studio A in Nashville September 22–26, 1970. "Sing Another Song, Boys" was recorded at the Isle of Wight Festival on August 30, 1970. Further recording took place at Trident Studios in London. The album title is descriptive, outlining its main themes, and it features several of Cohen's most famous compositions, including «Joan of Arc», «Avalanche», and «Famous Blue Raincoat». In the 1996 book Various Positions, Cohen biographer Ira Nadel confirms that many of the songs were from an earlier period, with «Joan of Arc» having been written at the Chelsea in New York; «Avalanche» and «Dress Rehearsal Rag» dated from earlier years; and «Love Calls You by Your Name» was a minor rewrite of an unpublished 1967 song called «Love Tries to Call You by Your Name». In 1991, Cohen revealed to Throat Culture magazine that the recording of his third album had been a difficult time for him because "absolutely everything was beginning to fall apart around me: my spirit, my intentions, my will. So I went into a deep and long depression." Tracklist: All songs written by Leonard Cohen. Side one 1. Avalanche – 5:07 2. Last Year's Man – 6:02 3. Dress Rehearsal Rag" – 6:12 4. Diamonds in the Mine – 3:52 Side two 1. Love Calls You by Your Name – 5:44 2. Famous Blue Raincoat – 5:15 3. Sing Another Song, Boys (Live at the Isle of Wight Festival, August 31, 1970) – 6:17 4. Joan of Arc – 6:29 Personnel Leonard Cohen – acoustic guitar, vocals Ron Cornelius – acoustic and electric guitars Charlie Daniels – acoustic guitar, bass guitar, fiddle Elkin "Bubba" Fowler – acoustic guitar, banjo, bass guitar Bob Johnston – piano, production Corlynn Hanney – vocals Susan Mussmano – vocals The Corona Academy, London – children's voices Michael Sahl – strings on third verse of "Last Year's Man" Paul Buckmaster – string and horn arrangements, conductor Released: March 19, 1971 Recorded: September 22 – 26, 1970 Studio: Columbia Studio A, Nashville (Second mix), August 31, 1970 at Isle of Wight, Trident Studios, London (First mix) Genre: Folk, folk rock Length: 44:21 Label: Columbia Producer: Bob Johnston

Leonard Cohen singing Suzanne Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river You can hear the boats go by You can spend the night beside her And you know that she's half crazy But that's why you want to be there And she feeds you tea and oranges That come all the way from China And just when you mean to tell her That you have no love to give her Then she gets you on her wavelength And she lets the river answer That you've always been her lover And you want to travel with her And you want to travel blind And you know that she will trust you For you've touched her perfect body with your mind. And Jesus was a sailor When he walked upon the water And he spent a long time watching From his lonely wooden tower And when he knew for certain Only drowning men could see him He said "All men will be sailors then Until the sea shall free them" But he himself was broken Long before the sky would open Forsaken, almost human He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone And you want to travel with him And you want to travel blind And you think maybe you'll trust him For he's touched your perfect body with his mind. Now Suzanne takes your hand And she leads you to the river She is wearing rags and feathers From Salvation Army counters And the sun pours down like honey On our lady of the harbour And she shows you where to look Among the garbage and the flowers There are heroes in the seaweed There are children in the morning They are leaning out for love And they will lean that way forever While Suzanne holds the mirror And you want to travel with her And you want to travel blind And you know that you can trust her For she's touched your perfect body with her mind. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In Memoriam of Mr. Leonard Cohen May The Lord Bless You And Keep You May The Lord Make His Light To Shine Upon You May The Lord Incline His Countenance Towards You And Grant You Peace יברך יהוה וישמרך יאר יהוה פניו אליך ויחנך ישא יהוה פניו אליך וישם לך שלום ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The above traditional Jewish Priests blessing ("Birkat Ha'Cohanim") was given by Leonard in the final moments of his concert in Israel to a raptured audience of some 50,000, I among them. His blessing will be in my heart forever. I pray the same for him today. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A month before his passing, during the event held for the release of his last album "You Want It Darker", in reply to whether it was especially moving for him, as a Jewish man, to have performed in Israel, Leonard answered - "Well, there’s a deep tribal aspect to my own nature. So, when I’m in contact with those deep resources, of course I feel a very special kind of nourishment. So, it is different. It is different because it arises from very deep wells of affiliation." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As is the case with many artists, Leonard was pressured not to perform in Israel. After having his appeasement offer of holding an additional concert in the Palestinian city of Ramallah turned down, he committed the proceeds of the concert to establishing a fund supporting the Palestinian Israeli Bereaved Parents for Peace organization (http://www.theparentscircle.com), to the efforts of which Leonard, in his words, wished to draw our attention. Held under the title "A Concert for Reconciliation, Tolerance & Peace", mirroring the name of Leonard's fund, these sentiments are as much needed now as then. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This concert video was made available for a while at the end of 2009 on the Leonard Cohen Forum in a DVD format: http://www.leonardcohenforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=20360 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Credits - nana10 / yosmusic / tuviamilkycat / yoavarden / TaliaE / eladiiy / albertnoonan / hannir2 /13Sierra / Kwistax1 / ASAFICO99 / shegh / mayormyq / EddieElad / illanaaron / TovaTre / kilkulo / yonatmor / daver667 / anatni / MajorTom2oo1 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now I've heard there was a secret chord That David played, and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do you? It goes like this The fourth, the fifth The minor fall, the major lift The baffled king composing Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you She tied you to a kitchen chair She broke your throne, and she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Now maybe there’s a God above As for me all I've ever learned from love Is how to shoot at someone who outdrew you But it's not a cry that you hear tonight It's not some pilgrim who claims to have seen the light No, it's a cold and it's a very broken Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah Interlude Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Oh people I have been here before I know this room; and I've walked this floor You see I used to live alone before I knew you. And I've seen your flag on the marble arch But this isn’t love, Love is not some kind of victory march No, it's a cold and it's a very lonely Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah There was a time you let me know What's really going on below But now, now you never even show it to me, do you? Now remember when I moved in you And The Holy Dove She was moving too And every single breath that we drew was Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah I’ve done my best, I know it wasn't much I couldn't feel, so I learned to touch I've told the truth, I didn't come here just to fool you And even though it all went wrong I'll stand right here before the Lord of Song With nothing, nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There are over 300 known versions of this song and the original draft lyrics written by Cohen contains around 80 verses. The song contains several biblical references, most notably evoking the stories of Samson and treacherous Delilah from the Book of Judges ("she cut your hair") as well as King David and Bathsheba ("you saw her bathing on the roof, her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you").

My take on Leonard Cohen's I'm Your Man.. Done after consuming substantial amounts of a local liquid which turns white when water is added. Bana sorarsanız, Cohen sevgisi Türkiye'de Müslüm Baba sevgisini andırıyor. "Beyaz Türkler" için daha kabul edilebilir bir isim sanki Cohen "baba".

All nine tracks from the You Want It Darker album, described by critics and fans alike as one of Leonard Cohen's most important and compelling recordings. These are intense, highly focused musical constructs that grapple with the fundamental human predicament. They are striking when first heard and resonate with the listener long afterward. You Want It Darker is destined to become not only an outstanding, sui generis album in the field of popular music but also a touchstone for songs that aspire to address the most basic human concerns — life, death, love, hate, spirituality – with self-awareness, bravery, and honesty.

Leonard Cohen Beacon Theatre, New York, February 19, 2009. Very good FM recording; not complete show. 00:00 Dance Me To The End Of Love [5:34] 05:34 The Future [6:49] 12:24 Chelsea Hotel No. 2 [4:06] 16:30 Tower Of Song [7:16] 23:47 Suzanne [3:43] 27:30 The Partisan [5:13] 32:43 Hallelujah [7:49] 40:33 A Thousand Kisses Deep [3:23] 43:56 Take This Waltz [9:20] 53:17 So Long, Marianne [6:27] 59:44 First We Take Manhattan [6:29] 1:06:14 Democracy [5:18] Christmas 2008, Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah was No. 1 on the UK Christmas singles chart (the song was covered by X Factor winner Alexandra Burke). While that’s mighty fine showing for the 74-year-old singer-songwriter, that has not stopped Cohen, who toured Australia in January-February, from donating US$200,000 to the victims of the country’s bushfires. After leaving Australia, Cohen played his first American concert in 15 years at the Beacon Theatre in New York on February 19. With his voice low, Cohen sounds like a very much sweeter Tom Waits but it is his meditative delivery that makes this ideal for late-night listening. This is what Jason Gross, in the Village Voice, reported: “Decked out in an appropriately black suit, he was almost sprightly, kneeling and buckling and shuffling and swaying to his mid- and slow-tempo songs, his gaze trained dramatically skyward and his eyes closed as he clutched the mic. Even his voice had regained its gravelly hush, sounding better than it has on his last two albums. “And while his eerie upscale-lounge-lizard persona still gives off chills (especially on the lusty “I’m Your Man”), it’s his latter-day apocalyptic visions that carry the most resonance in these shitty post-millennial times. “Everybody Knows” now sounded less like doomy fiction and more like he was gloomily reciting present-day headlines; he particularly savored the frightening chorus of “The Future” (”It is murder”).” ---------------- Thanks to tamlyn for sharing the tracks with us and to herzog777 for the artwork. .

Leonard Cohen revisits his house in Hydra, where he wrote Bird on a Wire ( "and there's the wire"!)and many other songs. This is the house he shared with Marianne, his muse, and the Marianne of SO LONG MARIANNE . He is accompanied by his backing singers Perla Batalla and Julie Chistensen. Part of the 1988 film SONGS FROM THE LIFE OF LEONARD COHEN. During the interview for that film I asked him whether his Marianne was the same Marianne as David Blue's Marianne. "How do you know that?" he asked. But of course it was in his lyrics: I loved Marianne in the winter In the loft of her favorite lover She was growing older The winter nights were cold She told me I'm frightened I said yes I know Her eyes held me to her They burned with such a fire For the saints on the walls Holy candles in the halls For those who had left her I held her and cried Oh Marianne you are beautiful To be this friend To a stranger who Leaves you only to fall Do not cry you have helped me I will not say goodbye I knew her from another song Her older poet wrote before We played it in the morning laughing on the floor Till he came knocking on the lower East Side door Yes you know I miss her Her and her stories of the night I called her a rabbit She gave me back my life I haven't heard her voice since the Isle of Wight Oh Marianne you are beautiful To be this friend To a stranger who Leaves you only to fall Do not cry you have helped me I will not say goodbye In the interview Leonard calls her MariannAH, just as David Blue sings her name.

Since this is a television interview one must quickly note that while the subject looks timeless, the interviewer is clearly the victim of vintage 1980's "hairdressing", which was shortly thereafter considered a fashion crime. Leonard is a master interview subject; present, measured, funny, philosophical. His vocabulary is striking, but not in a pretentious way; for example he might call a tour, “an enterprise” or an abandoned idea would “overthrown”, to get out of something, one might “extract “ themselves…He speaks slowly, allowing himself time... to... consider... what... to... say. next. It is a journalistic seduction – one starts to wait for the considered words of the poet with great anticipation. But unlike so many of the famous, his willingness to connect appears so genuine. During our interview I truly believed there was no place he would rather be than talking to me. I bragged to my journalist friends, ‘oh man, wait until you hear the interview I did with Leonard, it was incredible, he was so charming, so engaged…no question this is the best interview I have ever heard him do”. “Really?” they would say, “he did a pretty great one on our show too”. “ Yeah, right!” And then I would hear the interview on their show and it would be the same interview, just as warm, just as revealing, just as exclusive feeling… but not exclusive at all, God damn it. PS: I later performed with Leonard in 1993. I miss him greatly, particularly his world view on human kind. He passed away the night before Donald Trump was elected President of the United States.

    Leonard Cohen - Suzanne live

Leonard Cohen - 1968 BBC Broadcasts

Leonard Cohen BBC Broadcasts 1968 Live on BBC TV, excellent mono recording. 00:00 You Know Who I Am 03:48 Bird On The Wire 08:11 The Stranger Song 14:30 So Long Marianne 22:26 Master Song 30:29 There’s No Reason Why You Should Remember Me [improv] 32:11 Sisters Of Mercy 36:07 Teachers 40:05 Dress Rehearsal Rag 45:59 Suzanne 50:23 Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye 54:11 Story Of Isaac 58:23 One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong 1:02:16 Bird On The Wire 1:05:50 So Long Marianne 1:11:42 You Know Who I Am 1:14:48 Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye (Duet with Julie Felix) Lineup: Leonard Cohen - vocals Dave Cousins and The Strawbs have been mentioned as the backing band at this BBC session.

Leonard Cohen Interview (1980): CBC 'Authors' with Patrick Watson

Extensive interview by Patrick Watson, broadcast on CBC february 8th 1980 in the show 'Authors'. With poem readings of Death of a Lady's Man. Leonard talking about drugs, writing, marriage and many other things. I've reconstructed the interview by using two sources compromising between the best quality and the completeness of the interview. This explains the differences in quality of certain passages. "It's too late to change my name and it's too late for suicide"

    Nightingale

I built my house beside the wood
So I could hear you singing
And it was sweet and it was good
    And love was all beginning
    Fare thee well my nightingale
'Twas long ago I found you
Now all your songs of beauty fail
    The forest closes 'round you
The sun goes down behind a veil
'Tis now that you would call me
So rest in peace my nightingale
    Beneath your branch of holly
    Fare thee well my nightingale
I lived but to be near you
Tho' you are singing somewhere still
