An interview with Vice-Chancellor Shruti Sadolikar-Katkar conducted by Dr. Aneesh Pradhan, Shubha Mudgal, and Sudev J Sheth on February 9, 2016 at Bhatkhande Music Institute in Lucknow.
Established in 1926 by noted musicologist Pt. Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, the Bhatkhande Music Institute was initially known as the Marris College of Music. It has a long history of educating students in the various performing traditions of north Indian art music and dance. In this interview, the current Vice-Chancellor discusses the history, progress, and current status of the music institute.

Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande
Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande (August 10, 1860 – September 19, 1936) was an Indian musicologist who wrote the first modern treatise on Hindustani Classical Music (The north Indian variety of Indian classical music), an art which had been propagated earlier for a few centuries mostly through oral traditions. During those earlier times, the art had undergone several changes, rendering the raga grammar documented in scant old texts outdated.
Ragas used to be classified into Raga (male), Ragini (female), and Putra (children). Bhatkhande reclassified them into the currently used Thaat system. He noted that several ragas did not conform to their description in ancient Sanskrit texts. He explained the ragas in an easy-to-understand language and composed several bandishes which explained the grammar of the ragas. He borrowed the idea of lakshan geet from the Carnatic music scholar Venkatamakhin.
Early life
Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande was born in 1860 in Walkeshwar, Mumbai, Maharashtra. His father had great passion for music which motivated him to study music. At an early age he had mastered singing, veena and flute. He was educated at Elphinstone College in Mumbai and Deccan College in Pune. He graduated with a degree in Law in 1885 and joined the legal profession in 1887. Later he served a short stint as a lawyer in the High Court in Karachi.

Bhatkhande Music Institute
Bhatkhande Music Institute (भातखंडे संगीत संस्थान) now Bhatkhande Music Institute University is a renowned music institute in Lucknow. Established in 1926 by Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, it was declared a deemed university by University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2000, and offers music education in Vocal Music, Instrumental, Rhythms, Dance, Musicology and Research and Applied Music.
History
The Institute finds its origin in the Marris College of Music, established in 1926 by renowned classical singer and musicologist, Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande and Rai Umanath Bali with the help of Dr. Rai Rajeshwar Bali, then Education minister of the United Provinces, the institution was formally inaugurated by then Governor of United Provinces, Sir William Sinclair Marris, and was also named after him.
Later, on 26 March 1966, the Government of Uttar Pradesh took over the college and renamed it after its founder as Bhatkhande Music College of Hindustani Music, later and now Bhatkhande Music Institute University, after Government of India through a notification on 24 October 2000, declared the institute a deemed university.

Shrikrishna Narayan Ratanjankar (January 1, 1900 -- February 14, 1974) or Dr. S N Ratanjankar was a distinguished scholar and teacher of Hindustani classical music, from the Agra gharana. Shrikrishna Narayan Ratanjankar (January 1, 1900 -- February 14, 1974) or Dr. S N Ratanjankar was a distinguished scholar and teacher of Hindustani classical music, from the Agra gharana. Foremost disciple of Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande and Faiyaz Khan of Baroda State, he also remained principal of Bhatkhande Music Institute (Bhatkande Sangeet Sansthan), Lucknow, for many years, where he trained many noted names in the field of music.He was the Principal of Bhatkhande Music University (earlier known as Marris Music College), at Lucknow for several years, later was appointed as Vice-Chancellor Indira Sangeet Kala Vishva Vidyalaya, Khairagarh, Madhya Pradesh. Later he was once again called to head the Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapeeth on a 2 years contract. His students include K. G. Ginde, SCR Bhatt,[4] Chidanand Nagarkar, V.G. Jog, Dinkar Kaikini, Shanno Khurana,[5] Sumati Mutatkar, Acharya Prabhakar Chinchore, C R Vyas, Chinmoy Lahiri, and Roshan Lal Nagrath (music director).Ratanjankar has more than 800 compositions under his pen name "Sujan".He also published books including Geet Manjari, Taan Sangrah, Sangeet Shiksha, and Abhinava Geet Majari.In addition to these books he has also composed three operas.He also composed some new ragas such as Marga Bihag, Gopika Basant, Kedar Bahar, Sawani Kedar, Ranjani Kalyan, Hansaranjani, Salagvarali and Yamani Bilawal.He was appointed Chairman of the Jury of Auditions of AIR (All India Radio) in the mid-1950s.In 1957 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India,[8] and in 1963 the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy for Music, Dance and Drama, awarded him its highest honour for lifetime achievement, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship.
Some of his remarkable compostion are "Hovan Laagi Saanjh" Raag Purva Kalyan, "Mero Mana Sakhi Hara leeno" Raag Jhinjhoti, "Sumer Sahbe Sultan" Raag Salag Varali, "Payal Mori Baje" Raag Nand. "Uthata Jiya Hoon" Raag Basant Mukhari and many more.

Established in 1926 by noted musicologist Pt. Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, the Bhatkhande Music Institute was initially known as the Marris College of Music. It has a long history of educating students in the various performing traditions of north Indian art music and dance. Shrikrishna Narayan Ratanjankar (January 1, 1900 -- February 14, 1974) or Dr. S N Ratanjankar was a distinguished scholar and teacher of Hindustani classical music, from the Agra gharana. Foremost disciple of Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande and Faiyaz Khan of Baroda State, he also remained principal of Bhatkhande Music Institute (Bhatkande Sangeet Sansthan), Lucknow, for many years, where he trained many noted names in the field of music.He was the Principal of Bhatkhande Music University (earlier known as Marris Music College), at Lucknow for several years, later was appointed as Vice-Chancellor Indira Sangeet Kala Vishva Vidyalaya, Khairagarh, Madhya Pradesh. Later he was once again called to head the Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapeeth on a 2 years contract. His students include K. G. Ginde, SCR Bhatt,[4] Chidanand Nagarkar, V.G. Jog, Dinkar Kaikini, Shanno Khurana,[5] Sumati Mutatkar, Acharya Prabhakar Chinchore, C R Vyas, Chinmoy Lahiri, and Roshan Lal Nagrath (music director).Ratanjankar has more than 800 compositions under his pen name "Sujan".He also published books including Geet Manjari, Taan Sangrah, Sangeet Shiksha, and Abhinava Geet Majari.In addition to these books he has also composed three operas.He also composed some new ragas such as Marga Bihag, Gopika Basant, Kedar Bahar, Sawani Kedar, Ranjani Kalyan, Hansaranjani, Salagvarali and Yamani Bilawal.He was appointed Chairman of the Jury of Auditions of AIR (All India Radio) in the mid-1950s.In 1957 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India,[8] and in 1963 the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy for Music, Dance and Drama, awarded him its highest honour for lifetime achievement, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship.

Foremost disciple of Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande and Faiyaz Khan of Baroda State, he also remained principal of Bhatkhande Music Institute (Bhatkande Sangeet Sansthan), Lucknow, for many years, where he trained many noted names in the field of music.He was the Principal of Bhatkhande Music University (earlier known as Marris Music College), at Lucknow for several years, later was appointed as Vice-Chancellor Indira Sangeet Kala Vishva Vidyalaya, Khairagarh, Madhya Pradesh. Later he was once again called to head the Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapeeth on a 2 years contract. His students include K. G. Ginde, SCR Bhatt,[4] Chidanand Nagarkar, V.G. Ronu Majumdar (born 1965) is a noted Indian flautist in the Hindustani Classical Music tradition.
Early life and training
Born in Varanasi on July 28, 1965, Ranendranath Majumdar, popularly known as Ronu was trained under his father, Dr. Bhanu Majumdar, and later learned vocal music with the late Pt. Laxman Prasad Jaipurwale at whose behest he reverted to the flute. Pandit Vijay Raghav Rao, a music scholar, groomed Ronu into a concert flautist.
The bansuri flute was brought into the fold of Hindustani Classical music barely half a century ago by Pt Pannalal Ghosh, before which it was considered as a folk instrument. Ronu's speciality is the "Shank Bansuri", a 3-foot-long flute (0.91 m) of his own design, which adds an extra dimension at the lower scales.
Awards, nominations, and music collaborations
In 1981, Ronu Majumdar won the first prize at the All India Radio competition, and the President's Gold Medal.[citation needed]
In 1996,Ronu received a Grammy nomination for his work on the album Tabula Rasa with Bela Fleck, the American banjo virtuoso. He has associated with Pandit Ravi Shankar in albums like Passages, and Chants of India. He has more than 30 audio releases to his credit. He has won prestigious Aditya Vikram Birla Award for the year 1999 for his dedication to music.Sahara India Pariwar felicitated him with lifetime achievement award on occasion of Jyoti Diwas 2001.
Ronu Majumdar performing in Pune
Today, Ronu Majumdar is among the more popular musicians on this instrument, and is especially popular with the younger generation for his creative improvisations. Pt Majumdar's music is rooted in the Maihar gharana which has musicians of eminence like Pt Ravi Shankar and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan to its credit. Apart from his concerts all over India in different music festivals, he also participated in the Festival of India in Moscow and Asiad '82 in New Delhi. He has toured extensively in Europe, the USA, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East.
Pt. Majumdar is also known for a number of collaborations and jugalbandis with other leading instrumentalists. An innovative composer, he has also composed several pieces in a fusion of Hindustani classical with other forms of music, particularly Western Classical Music, including the projects Carrying Hope (Music Today), A Traveller's Tale, Song of Nature (Magnasound), Kal Akela Kahan (Plus Music). He has also provided short training sessions to budding young artists like Raghavendran Rajasekaran from Singapore.
The Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY) is a voluntary youth movement which promotes intangible aspects of Indian cultural heritage by promoting Indian classical music, classical dance, folk music, yoga, meditation, crafts and other aspects of Indian culture; it is a movement with chapters in over 300 towns all over the world.[1] SPIC MACAY was established by Dr. Kiran Seth in 1977 at IIT Delhi.[2][3][4]
It seeks to foster the traditional Indian values and to generate awareness of the cultural traditions and heritage of India. In order to achieve its goals, SPICMACAY organizes concerts, lectures, demonstrations, workshops, informal discussions, and talks by eminent scholars and thinkers. These programs are hosted in schools and colleges with support of the local chapters of the organization.

with Ustad Mohammed Dabir Khan we come to another prominent Veena Maestro of the 20th century. Being the grandson of Ustad Wazir Khan of Rampur he represented of one of the oldest Dhrupad and Veena traditions. As direct descendant of Naubat Khan the son in law of legendary Tansen, he was the last Veena player in this long line of famous Binkars and Nayaks.
He was raised and musical trained in Rampur and spent a big part of his later life in Kolkata. Being a Veena player and Dhrupad singer he worked as a director of The Tansen and Saderang Music College and All India Radio Artist. Some of his prominent disciples were Pandit Birendra Kishore Roy Choudhury, Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh, Pandit Radhika Mohan Maitra and Pandit Santosh Banerjee.
Even if the Veena tradition of Tansens descendant is not continued today, the musical influence is vibrant and alive in several nowadays musical schools. The Dhrupad based musical heritage of Ustad Allauddin Khans Maihar Gharana represented by outstanding musicians like Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Pandit Nikhil Banerjee and Shrimati Annapurna Devi is certainly the most influential of them. Beside Ustad Allauddin Khan Ustad Wazir Khan thought musicians like Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan whose music is today represented by his son Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and his sons. Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, father of the modern days North Indian music theory was another prominent disciple of Ustad Wazir Khan.
Ustad Dabir Khans Veena recording of Raga Shuddha Sarang presents a brief alap, followed by a gradual buildup of the jor leading to a gammak driven thok jhala. The recording finishes with a short piece accompanied by Pakhavaj which rather follows the old tarparan system (the Veena player plays the bols of Pakhavaj parans with his right hand, while the Pakhavaj player follows the Veena players rhythmical patterns) than the nowadays typical playing of a vocal or instrumental dhrupad composition. For a more comprehensive picture of Ustad Dabir Khans music I strongly recommend to listen also to his vocal Dhrupad renditions.
