Tom Logan

Tom Logan (born 2 July 1985) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Brisbane Lions and Port Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL).

AFL career

Brisbane Lions career (2005)

He was picked up originally by the Brisbane Lions in the 2003 AFL Draft, at selection number 65 overall. He made his debut for the Brisbane Lions against Port Adelaide in Round 2 of the 2005 AFL season. His two years spent on the Brisbane Lions list were injury ridden. He only played two more games for the club before being delisted at the end of that year.

Port Adelaide career (2006–2015)

At the end of 2005, Logan went back to South Australia, he was then given an offer to train with Port Adelaide over the pre season. He was given a lifeline by Port Adelaide, as they picked him up as a rookie for the 2006 AFL season, on a one year contract.

Power player Gavin Wanganeen retired from AFL in 2006, and Tom got his chance, elevated to the senior list because of Gavin’s retirement. He made his debut for Port Adelaide in Round 15 against Geelong, and played 8 games straight before the end of the season, kicking the two goals.

Logan Tom

Logan Maile Lei Tom (born May 25, 1981) is an American indoor volleyball and beach volleyball player. She is a four-time Olympian at the outside hitter position. At age 19, Logan became the youngest woman ever to be selected for an American Olympic volleyball team when she made the 2000 Games in Sydney. She is a skilled all-around player who brings stability to the American serve receive and defense, while also providing the team with a solid attack and block at the net. She has been a huge part of the national team for many years. In Beijing, Tom helped Team USA win a silver medal and was named Best Scorer.

High school and personal life

Logan Tom was born in Napa, California, to Kristine and Melvyn Tom. Her father was a defensive end for nine years in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Chicago Bears. Though she grew up with her mother and older brother Landon in Salt Lake City, Utah, she spent her summers with her father and his relatives in Hawaii learning how to surf. She is of Chinese Hawaiian descent.

Thomas & Friends

Thomas & Friends (titled Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends prior to 2003) is a British children's television series. It had its first broadcast on the ITV network in Great Britain in 1984 and first aired in the United States on PBS KIDS in 2004. It is based on The Railway Series of books by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry and his son, Christopher Awdry. These books deal with the adventures of a group of anthropomorphised locomotives and road vehicles who live on the fictional Island of Sodor. The books were based on stories Wilbert told to entertain his son, Christopher, during his recovery from measles. Many of the stories from the first four series are based on events from Awdry's personal experience.

History

Precursors

Sodor (fictional island)

Sodor is a fictional island located in the Irish Sea, just off the English mainland near Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria. It is used as the setting for The Railway Series books by the Rev. W. Awdry, and later used in the Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends television series.

Inspiration and creation

The need for consistency in the locations for The Railway Series necessitated the creation of a suitable location. The Rev. Awdry required a setting for his books that would be within Great Britain, but would be sufficiently isolated from the rest of British Railways to allow him to do as he wished with the location.

Inspiration came on a visit to the Isle of Man, which forms the Diocese of Sodor and Man in 1950. Awdry noted that while there was an Isle of Man, there was no similar Island of Sodor. A large island would meet the criteria he required, giving him the isolation from changes to the British railway system while giving him somewhere that people could believe in.

Between them, Awdry and his younger brother George worked out Sodor's history, geography, industry and language ("Sudric"). Inspiration came from various sources. Dryaw was an anagram of Awdry. Elsbridge was named after Wilbert's parish of Elsworth. Some place names were Sudric equivalents or near-equivalents of those in the real world (for instance, Skarloey was a rough Sudric equivalent of the Welsh Talyllyn: logh (Manx) = llyn (Welsh) = "lake"). By the time they had finished, they knew more about Sodor than would ever be used in the Railway Series stories.
