Sounds of Blackness is a Grammy Award-winning vocal and instrumental ensemble from Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota who perform music from several genres music including gospel, R&B, soul, and jazz. The group scored several hits on the Billboard R&B chart and Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in the 1990s. Cynthia Johnson of Lipps Inc. fame and Grammy winner Ann Nesby are the group's most prominent alumni.
The group was founded in 1969 by Russell Knighton at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, and the group was called the Macalester College Black Voices. It was in 1971 when current director Gary Hines took leadership over the ensemble, and the group name was officially changed to Sounds of Blackness (SOB). The group had acquired local celebrity status throughout the years though never signed with a record company because of various reasons including the fact that many companies were not comfortable with the group's name. Some companies even suggested to Hines that the group's name be changed to "The Sounds of Music."

In physics, sound is a vibration that propagates as a typically audible mechanical wave of pressure and displacement, through a medium such as air or water. In physiology and psychology, sound is the reception of such waves and their perception by the brain.
Acoustics is the interdisciplinary science that deals with the study of mechanical waves in gases, liquids, and solids including vibration, sound, ultrasound, and infrasound. A scientist who works in the field of acoustics is an acoustician, while someone working in the field of acoustical engineering may be called an acoustical engineer. An audio engineer, on the other hand is concerned with the recording, manipulation, mixing, and reproduction of sound.
Applications of acoustics are found in almost all aspects of modern society, subdisciplines include aeroacoustics, audio signal processing, architectural acoustics, bioacoustics, electro-acoustics, environmental noise, musical acoustics, noise control, psychoacoustics, speech, ultrasound, underwater acoustics, and vibration.

Sounds of Blackness - Gary Hines - prince Interview
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are one of the greatest songwriting and producing duo in music history. Meeting on the same ’70s Minneapolis music scene that produced Prince, the pair formed the band Flyte Time, an outfit that would morph into the original line up of one of the most storied funk groups of the era, the Time. By 1983 the duo had begun more actively pursuing songwriting and producing, commencing a series of essential R&B; singles for the likes of the S.O.S Band, Cherrelle, Cheryl Lynn, Alexander O’Neal and others. In 1986 they began their now legendary association with Janet Jackson, producing the Grammy Award winning LP _Control_, the first of many career defining efforts over the next three decades. In addition, they have crafted classics for the likes of Force M.D.’s, Sounds of...

The blackness
Keep, keep on
Never say die
Keep, keep on
The blackness
Keep, keep on
Never say die
Keep, keep on
Keep, keep on
The blackness
Never say die
Keep, keep, keep
Never say die
Keep, keep on
Never say die
The blackness
Keep, keep on
Never say die
Optimistic
When in the midst of sorrow
You can't see up when looking down
A brighter day tomorrow will bring
You hear the voice of reason
Telling you this can never be done
No matter how hard reality seems
Just hold on to your dreams, yeah
Don't give up and don't give in, although it seems you never win
You will always pass the test as long as you keep your head to the sky
You can win as long as you keep your head to the sky
You can win as long as you keep your head to the sky
Be optimistic
If things around you crumble
No, you don't have to stumble and fall
Keep pushing on and don't you look back
I know of storms and strive
Out of your album of life
Just think ahead and you'll be inspired
To reach higher and higher
You'll always do your best if you learn to never say never
You maybe down, but you're not out
That's when I felt lifted [Incomprehensible]
Don't give up and don't give in, although it seems you never win
You will always pass the test as long as you keep your head to the sky
You can win as long as you keep your head to the sky
You can win as long as you keep your head to the sky
Be optimistic
You can win as long as you keep your head to the sky
Be optimistic
You can win as long as you keep your head to the sky
Be optimistic
You can win as long as you keep your head to the sky
Be optimistic
You can win as long as you keep your head to the sky
Be optimistic
You can win, yes
Yeah
In your head
Be optimistic
You can win as long as you keep your head to the sky
Be optimistic
You can win as long as you keep your head to the sky
Be optimistic
You can win as long as you keep your head to the sky
Be optimistic
You can win as long as you keep your head to the sky
Be optimistic
You can win as long as you keep your head to the sky
Be optimistic
You can win as long as you keep your head to the sky
Be optimistic
You can win as long as you keep your head to the sky
Be optimistic
Yeah
