Stuart Saunders may refer to:
Stuart Saunders Smith (born 1948) is an American composer and percussionist.
Stuart Saunders Smith was born in Portland Maine, and began his percussion and composition studies at the age of six with Charles Newcomb. He studied harmony, counterpoint, and arranging at the Berklee School of Music in 1966, and continued his percussion and composition studies at the Hartt College of Music (1967–1972) and the University of Illinois at Urbana (1973–1977). He currently resides in the state of Vermont with his wife Sylvia.
Over a hundred of Smith's works are for percussion instruments with a special emphasis on vibraphone literature. His Links Series of Vibraphone Essays (1974-1994) is considered as groundbreaking music. Also Plenty (I-XXXIV) and New England are concert length compositions for vibraphone that extend the intellectual and emotional range of that instrument. Smith also has composed extensively for drumset, orchestra bells, xylophone, marimba, chimes, and multi-percussion.

Performer's Notes: "A few years ago, I heard a radio interview on NPR with former Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Pinsky, and he spoke of his poetry in a way that has never left me. I think to fully appreciate and experience his poems, one must hear them read aloud. Beyond the meaning of the words themselves, Pinsky's verse is deeply rooted in the percussive and musical sounds that the syllables create. In the interview, Pinsky spoke of reading complicated manuals and other texts on subjects that he didn't understand, because he just really loved to hear the combinations of sounds and articulations created by the arrangement of the letters, and without meaning attached to the words, could enjoy that more. This is one of the things that I think about when I perform Stu...

On April 12th, 2016, I performed the world premiere of a new work by Stuart Saunders Smith. The performance took place at the Arizona State University Art Museum. This piece came out of working with Stuart and performing his music for over a decade now. Stuart wanted to write a piece for me and he asked for my input. I told him I’d like something that is similar to his mobiles – where several performers may choose different sections of the score to play. Mobiles are typically short passages that can be rearranged in any order during performance. They create variability during performances and were also used by other composers such as Earle Brown, John Cage, and Karlheinz Stockhausen (to name a few). Stuart ended up creating a solo work that can be performed on vibraphone, glockenspiel, o...

To register for the 2015 course, visit https://www.edx.org/course/justice-harvardx-er22-1x-0. PART ONE: THE MORAL SIDE OF MURDER If you had to choose between (1) killing one person to save the lives of five others and (2) doing nothing even though you knew that five people would die right before your eyes if you did nothing—what would you do? What would be the right thing to do? Thats the hypothetical scenario Professor Michael Sandel uses to launch his course on moral reasoning. After the majority of students votes for killing the one person in order to save the lives of five others, Sandel presents three similar moral conundrums—each one artfully designed to make the decision more difficult. As students stand up to defend their conflicting choices, it becomes clear that the assumpt...
In the late 20th Century the distinction between soldier and mercenary became blurred. The recent use of private military companies (PMCs) in Iraq has been more extensive than at any time in modern history. The brutal killing of four PMC employees in Fallujah in April 2004 made it clear that these “contractors” are not merely workers in a foreign land. But are the lives of such men the only thing at risk when we privatize warfare? Shadow Company explores the moral and ethical issues private military solutions create for PMC employees, for the Western governments who foot the bill for their salaries, and for everyday citizens like you. The filmmakers traveled the globe to expose all sides of the issue, interviewing PMC staff, owners and lobbyists, former mercenaries, academics, journalists...
