The National (band)
The National is an American indie rock band from Cincinnati, Ohio, formed in 1999. Currently based in Brooklyn, the band consists of Matt Berninger (vocals), Aaron Dessner (guitar, keyboards), Bryce Dessner (guitar), Scott Devendorf (bass) and Bryan Devendorf (drums).
Founded by Berninger, Scott and Bryan Devendorf, and Aaron Dessner, The National released their self-titled debut album, The National (2001), on Brassland Records, an independent record label founded by Dessner and his twin brother, Bryce. Bryce Dessner, who had assisted in recording the album, soon joined as a full member, participating in the recording of its follow-up, Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers (2003).
Leaving behind their day jobs, The National signed with Beggars Banquet Records and released their third studio album, Alligator (2005), to widespread critical acclaim. The band's fourth and fifth studio albums, Boxer (2007) and High Violet (2010), increased their exposure significantly. In 2013, the band released its sixth studio album, Trouble Will Find Me. It was nominated in the 2014 Grammys for Best Alternative Album.

The National (band)
The National is an American indie rock band formed in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States, in 1999, and currently based in Brooklyn. The band's lyrics, which have been described as "dark, melancholy and difficult to interpret", are written and sung by Matt Berninger, a baritone. The band's music is composed and performed by Aaron Dessner (guitar and keyboard), Bryce Dessner (guitar), Scott Devendorf (bass) and Bryan Devendorf (drums). The band has recorded six studio albums; the most recent, Trouble Will Find Me, was released in May 2013 and was nominated in the 2014 Grammys for Best Alternative Album. Similar difficulties were also felt by Zaggle Griff (ZG), an alternative rock band from Bandung. After releasing their debut album ” Cold Sun ” last September of 2013, it wasn’t until April 2014 ZG managed to release the video for “Leather Jacket & Shoes”, their first single of the album. It just need to be done, where circumstances require ZG to release a video clip in such a short period of production time, although far from ideal conditions. FILM SYNOPSIS: As the scene opens, we're enveloped instantly by something that's lonely and has been left to wither away and decay. Forlorn and alone, we see Bishi's back turned to the camera as she walks down an inner lane of a village inviting dusk. She joins a congregation of young and old widows in a prayer room, all dressed in white saris and at different points of degeneration. They look dusty like old objects. There is a transition and an explosion of color with a celebration in the streets of a small village where there's confusion as well as excitement among its dwellers in the novelty of the few 50 widows that reluctantly and joyously (secretly) mingle around and amongst the village people. With smiles that they've finally broken into, covered in Holi color and Manish Arora's vivid clothes. We now understand that the forgotten women are part of the community again. But only for a short while. Bishi is then captured and sits in a small boat in a lake, rowed by a single small man, half her size. He cannot fathom why she sings an inaudible melody. She is dark, strong, and her eyes along with her voice are like two in a band show after a long journey.

There is something undefinable that has brought us here, to a river, two hundred miles north of the Arctic Circle, where even the definition of wilderness is insignificant.”

The story centers on the three Bonesteel’s excursion into the Brooks Range of Alaska, their unexpected separation, and their journey that unfolded through the mountains, tundra and rivers of Alaska's Gates of the Arctic National Park.
Caribou Bones is an elaborate "home movie," with Paul utilizing the trip itself and his family's archive of super 8mm footage connect events from the past to emotions of the present. Released in 1995, the film garnered festival screenings and was broadcast on Georgia Public Television as a Father's Day Special.
“At the center of Caribou Bones is the emotional connection between spending time in wilderness and being an active and compassionate member of a family,” says producer/director Paul Bonesteel about his third documentary.
Contributing to the uniqueness of the project, Paul enlisted his father and older brother to assist in the writing of the script. In their own words and voice-over narration, they take a three-way story approach to emphasize the personal nature of the adventure.
“Many strong and meaningful emotions lie just beneath the surface of many families. The trip into the Alaskan wilderness, and the subsequent production of the documentary, brought many of those emotions to the surface for my father, my brother and myself."
An all original sound track by Paul Bonesteel, and songs from the band Chief Seattle (of which Paul was a member), guide the visuals of wilderness travel into a deeply personal, yet universally appealing message of family love and outdoor appreciation.
Director’s thoughts from 2014:
Caribou Bones was a coming-of-age story for us Bonesteel men. Not an adolescent ‘coming of age’ story, but about becoming men and reflecting on life within a family. Remembering a fishing trip his father had taken him on, my father had long wanted to take us on a father-sons adventure, and this was the time. Twenty one years have now gone by since the shooting of the film in August of 1992. Peter Bonesteel is now 78 years old and my brother Jon and I have been through more than half our lives with all the joys, trials and responsibilities that come with living. But I think we all feel like that trip, including the filmmaking component, has been a highlight in our lives and in the making of our relationships.
Looking at this film from today’s vantage point, technically, it was limited by the tools of the day. Just like some of my other early films, I was adamant about making the film and was going to do it with whatever technology I could muster. In this case it was my trusty Canon L1 high 8mm video camera. I had to ration 5 batteries over the duration of the 7 day trip and that was a challenge; trying to decide when and when not to shoot. Beyond the fact that, technically, I wish it could express the beauty of Alaska better, I’m content that the film moved me forward both personally and professionally. As a songwriter and performer I had put myself in front of people before but this was first time I had ventured into making a ‘personal’ documentary. Films like Ross McElwee’s Sherman’s "March" inspired me to believe that a story like this could possibly be universal enough to keep a viewer’s interest. When it aired in June of 1995, I remember receiving a phone call at about midnight from a stranger who tracked me down just to express to me, as a father and a son, how meaningful the film was the him. That meant a lot. I hope you enjoy the film and share it with someone.

Sometimes releasing a video clip is not easy for bands belonging to the independent scene, where source of funds can become burdensome. Similar difficulties were also felt by Zaggle Griff (ZG), an alternative rock band from Bandung. After releasing their debut album ” Cold Sun ” last September of 2013, it wasn’t until April 2014 ZG managed to release the video for “Leather Jacket & Shoes”, their first single of the album.
It just need to be done, where circumstances require ZG to release a video clip in such a short period of production time, although far from ideal conditions. ZG initially planned to develop a video clip with a more adequate budget and better production. However, since the song “Leather Jacket & Shoes” was chosen as one of the semi-finalists for the national competition Planetrox (http://planetrox.net), ZG are required to submit a video for the song as a condition for further participation in the event.
A very close deadline, budget was actually insufficient. Long story short, personnels, management, and friends of ZG decided to collaborate, working on a video clip in less than a week with a budget of less than a million Rupiahs only (approx. 90USD). Yes, we can actually make a decent video clip with only a small amount of money, these days. ZG collaborated with a young and up-coming director, Isdam Atrahadena whom was assisted by Raoul Adam, Ganeshatama Kenny, with additional footages from 168frames video maker community. Finally the video clip that gave a visual illustration of the song ” Leather Jacket & Shoes ” was able to be completed. With a simple concept, the video illustrates the atmosphere of everyday experience from the personnel of ZG personnel; jamming in the studio, on the road to a music gig, and the thrilling experience onstage .

For his debut show at RaebervonStenglin, Ari Benjamin Meyers exhibits a temporary rock band. The name of this band is The Art. Playing in situ all day, during the opening hours of the gallery over five weeks of his exhibition's duration, The Art is defined by a particular length of time in a particular space. A manufactured group, its members will be art school students who have responded to an advert by the artist that very precisely sets out the terms of its existence. Everything The Art does will take place in the setting of the gallery: from first coming together as a band, progressing through first rehearsals to well-practiced group, before finally — and as is contractually inevitable — breaking up.
Just as the band is the creation of Meyers, so too is the score that The Art will play. The artist has composed a collection of verses, choruses and bridges that will form the basis of The Art's repertoire, complex enough for the band to inhabit over their sustained gallery performance, yet deliberately kept open enough to allow improvisation and freedom of interpretation. An artist educated as a conductor and composer, Meyers' work traverses these categories, dissolving the distinctions between art and music, rehearsal and performance. So although he was classically trained, he hasplayed in and worked with a number of bands including Einstürzende Neubauten, The Orb, The Residents, Celan and most recently Chicks on Speed.
His piece responds to RaebervonStenglin's garage-like space and industrial location — a fitting location for a rock band to practice — and to the enhanced awareness of the gallery setting that frames his concept, turning every note into a performance and everything surrounding this into an artwork. The self-reflexive nature of Meyers’ project has Duchampian antecedents, but its precedents and influences are equally the music and lore of the countless bands that have gone before, specifically the so-called “art school” bands that originally formed as an extension of the punk movement, such as Gang of Four, Devo, Talking Heads and later Sonic Youth.
In combining the raw dynamic of individuals making music with today's manufactured and packaged consumerist thing, Meyers’ piece encourages meditation on the band as a changing cultural phenomenon. A five-week long durational performance, The Name of the band is The Art will leave behind not a fixed musical record, but a legacy made of memories and the stories that circulate its short existence. This ephemeral residue will be enhanced by more physical remains including band merchandise, a fanzine, and a score that, after the band itself is no more, may yet give rise to new iterations of The Art.
The artist has invited Kathi Glas and Kai Knappe of Georgie+Timmy Studio to design the costumes and merchandise and John Holten, author and editor in chief of Broken Dimanche Press, to write scenarios and liner notes that accompany each song.

The commitment exhibited by the Sierra Leonean troops serving under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has been commended as exemplary and reflective of the true spirit of African brotherhood.
The troops were applauded at a ceremony held to bid them farewell as they completed 20 months of service in Somalia, attended by the Somali President H.E. Hassan Sheik Mohamud, the Special Representative of the Chairperson of African Union Commission (SRCC) and AMISOM Head Ambassador Maman S. Sidikou, the head of the Interim Juba Administration Ahmed Islan Madobe and the acting AMISOM Force Commander Major General Jonathan Kipkemoi Rono.
Also in attendance were the Somalia National Army (SNA) Chief of Command General Dahir Adan Elmi, the Kismayo Sector Commander and Sierra Leonean Contingent Commander Brig. General Tamba Alieu, Cabinet ministers, officials from AMISOM, United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia, Members of Parliament and officials from the Interim Juba administration.

Early last month, Melbourne alternative veterans Frente! announced that in honour of the 21 years since their debut long-play Marvin The Album made them a household name, core members Angie Hart and Simon Austin would reunite to embark on an extensive national tour through May and June. If the press release is anything to go by, there'll be "some surprises" too.
"Yeah, I put that in there," Angie jokes. "We'll have some guests, we'll have some material that is 25 years old and it'll probably be the only time we ever play it. I can't imagine we'll play all of that stuff ever again, and I wanna make a suitcase gallery and bring some of that memorabilia with me."
When we asked Angie why she thinks Marvin the Album has been the band's most enduring release, she says it was the result of an unbeatable and very ephemeral combination. "We were young [laughs] We didn't go to school together, we weren't all the same age, and we had really different musical tastes, and we didn't know what we were doing, and I think that's a great combo and you can't recreate that," says Angie.
So can Frente! fans expect new material from the group any time soon? "We would like to write some more, it's been an interesting period of time," says Angie. "I guess Simon and I have become adults, finally, or as close as we'll ever get [laughs] And so that made it quite difficult for us to find time to write, but we still have an amazing chemistry together. When we get together it's like no time has passed at all."
