Trophy wife

Trophy wife is an informal term for a wife, usually young and attractive, who is regarded as a status symbol for the husband, who is often an older and wealthy "sugar daddy". The term trophy husband is the male equivalent.

Referring to a spouse as a trophy wife usually reflects negatively on the character or personality of the husband and has a connotation of narcissism and desire to impress others, and that the husband would not be able to attract the sexual interest of the attractive woman but for his wealth or position. It can also be used to imply that the trophy wife in question has little personal merit besides her physical attractiveness, does very little of substance beyond remaining attractive, requires substantial expense for maintaining her appearance and is in some ways synonymous with the term "gold digger".

History

The term's etymological origins are disputed. One claim is that trophy wife originally appeared in a 1950 issue of The Economist newspaper, referring to the historical practice of warriors capturing the most beautiful women during battle to bring home as wives.William Safire claimed that the term trophy wife was coined by Julie Connelly, a senior editor of Fortune magazine, in a cover story in the issue of August 28, 1989 and immediately entered common usage. Many sources claim the term was coined earlier (for example, the Online Etymology Dictionary cites 1984) but easy online access to William Safire's article about the term has led many (such as Oxford English Dictionary) to believe that August 28, 1989 was its first use. However, the idiom is found in passing in a quote in a 1965 publication, apparently referring to the wife of Bernie Madoff.

Trophy Wife (English band)

Trophy Wife were a band from Oxford, England, consisting of Jody Prewett (vocals, guitar, bass), Ben Rimmer (keyboards, sampler) and Kit Monteith (drums, percussion, sampler). The band disbanded after playing their last show at the O2 Academy, Oxford, on 14 June 2013.

History

Founding

The three were all formerly members of fellow Oxford band Jonquil. They describe their sound on their Facebook page as "pentatonic pop". When asked in a 2010 interview with UK music blog There Goes the Fear about the origin of their name, they responded, "We’ve had the name for a while and it seemed to suit the sounds we started making. To us, it’s a name that is both glamorous and glitzy yet somehow inherently dark. In many ways this is also how we see our music; Kit had heaps of old manual photographs of these desolate, windswept English locations and we pasted the words ‘Trophy Wife’ in big pink letters onto them and we really liked the relationship between the two."

Releases

After releasing their acclaimed debut single "Microlite" on 8 November 2010 on Moshi Moshi Records, the band played their first live shows, which included a string of successful support slots with the likes of Foals and Bombay Bicycle Club. The follow-up double A-side single to "Microlite" was "The Quiet Earth" / "White Horses", released on 28 February 2011.

Trophy Wife (film)

Trophy Wife is a 2014 Filipino romantic drama and thriller film directed by Andoy Ranay, starring Cristine Reyes, Derek Ramsay, Heart Evangelista, and John Estrada. The film will be distributed by Viva Films with the co-production of Multivision Pictures and was released on July 30, 2014 in theatres nationwide.

This is the 4th Adult drama film in 2014 in Viva Films after the hit movie of No Other Woman (2011), A Secret Affair (2012), and When the Love is Gone (2013).

Plot

Chino (Derek Ramsay), a rich playboy, meets Lani (Cristine Reyes), a GI baby of a former prostitute, when he visits Angeles City for a bar hopping. During Chino and Lani’s whirlwind romance, Chino gets into a fight with a mayor’s son that leads his brother Sammy (John Estrada) to send him to America. Lani, with no knowledge of Chino’s departure to America, follows Chino to Manila to tell him about her pregnancy. Upon Lani’s visit, Sammy refuses Lani entry to their house. As Sammy leaves the house, not looking at the commotion Lani is causing outside his car, he instructs his driver to ignore Lani’s pleas and carry on driving. The driver accidentally bumps into Lani, causing her miscarriage.

The 2008 edition of The National was held December 3-7, 2008 in Quebec City, Quebec. It was the second Grand Slam event of the men's 2008-09 World Curling Tour season.

2012 The National

The 2012 Pomeroy Inn & Suites National was held from January 25 to 29 at the EnCana Events Centre in Dawson Creek, British Columbia. It was the third Grand Slam event of the 2011–12 curling season and the eleventh time the tournament has been held. The purse was CAD$100,000.

In the final, Glenn Howard held off Kevin Martin to win the game with a score of 6–5 and clinch his second Grand Slam of the year, his third career Grand Slam at The National, and his tenth career Grand Slam overall.

CBC drops television coverage

Due to a dispute with iSport Media, the Slam management organization, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, which had been covering the Slams for four years, dropped their coverage of the 2012 National event at the last minute. It will make the first time since the 1962 Macdonald Brier that CBC will not be broadcasting curling.
