In this video, we bring you the top things to do and see in Bali’s tourism hub, Kuta. The first is Kuta Beach, a beautiful long stretch of white sand beach. Surfing is quite popular here, especially for beginners. Surfboards can always be rented off of the beach, but you should arrange in advanced if you want lessons. More experienced surfers can take a boat out to Kuta Reef, which deals one perfect wave after another. Boat trips cost around $20 round trip.
The Beachwalk Mall offers the best shopping in the area. Whether you’re looking for a new outfit, to exchange some money, or a delicious meal, the Beachwalk Mall will have what you need.
The Ground Zero Monument was built to remember those who were tragically lost in the heartless bombings. The bombings had a deep impact on the community, and it is an event that must not be forgotten.
If you didn’t find what you were looking for at the mall or just want to test out your bargaining skills, head over to the Kuta Street Market. The market is a long stretch of small shops that sell all sorts of items. The most common items are t-shirts, souvenirs, and watches, but there are many more options.
Waterbom Waterpark is one of the most fun attractions in Kuta. It has been rated the best waterpark in Asia. With amazing waterslides and even a Flowrider, we don’t doubt it. Head over to the water park for a fun afternoon with the family.
Kuta is also famous for its vibrant nightlife. Some of the best clubs and bars in the whole island are in Kuta. Skygarden is a nightclub with many different floors that all play different genres of music. All you need to do is head upstairs for a completely different atmosphere. Skygarden is definitely the place to be on Saturday nights.

Kuta
Kuta is administratively a district (kecamatan) and subdistrict/village (kelurahan) in southern Bali, Indonesia. A former fishing village, it was one of the first towns on Bali to see substantial tourist development, and as a beach resort remains one of Indonesia's major tourist destinations. It is known internationally for its long sandy beach, varied accommodation, many restaurants and bars, and many renowned surfers who visit from Australia. It is located near Bali's Ngurah Rai Airport.
Kuta was the site of the October 12, 2002 1st Bali bombing (202 killed) and the October 1, 2005 2nd Bali bombing (26 killed).
The Balinese Provincial Government have taken the view that the preservation of the Balinese culture, natural resources and wildlife are of primary importance in the development of the island. To this end they have limited tourist development to the peninsula on the extreme southern aspect of the island; Kuta beach is on the western side of this peninsula and Sanur is on the east. To the north of the peninsula no new tourist development is supposedly permitted..

Half a World Away
In 2011, I spent six months backpacking throughout South East Asia with two friends. We visited Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia and Indonesia. The trip saw us take on many challenges and partake in a range of exciting new activities. This video highlights some of the best moments and experiences of our trip. In this video, we bring you the top things to do and see in Bali’s tourism hub, Kuta. The first is Kuta Beach, a beautiful long stretch of white sand beach. Surfing is quite popular here, especially for beginners. Surfboards can always be rented off of the beach, but you should arrange in advanced if you want lessons. More experienced surfers can take a boat out to Kuta Reef, which deals one perfect wave after another. Boat trips cost around $20 round trip.
The Beachwalk Mall offers the best shopping in the area. Whether you’re looking for a new outfit, to exchange some money, or a delicious meal, the Beachwalk Mall will have what you need.
The Ground Zero Monument was built to remember those who were tragically lost in the heartless bombings. The bombings had a deep impact on the community, and it is an event that must not be forgotten.
If you didn’t find what you were looking for at the mall or just want to test out your bargaining skills, head over to the Kuta Street Market. The market is a long stretch of small shops that sell all sorts of items. The most common items are t-shirts, souvenirs, and watches, but there are many more options.
Waterbom Waterpark is one of the most fun attractions in Kuta. It has been rated the best waterpark in Asia. With amazing waterslides and even a Flowrider, we don’t doubt it. Head over to the water park for a fun afternoon with the family.
Kuta is also famous for its vibrant nightlife. Some of the best clubs and bars in the whole island are in Kuta. Skygarden is a nightclub with many different floors that all play different genres of music. All you need to do is head upstairs for a completely different atmosphere. Skygarden is definitely the place to be on Saturday nights.

The first few day of a Bali tour that took me to Ubud (check out the Spirit of Bali video), Gili T, Seminyak, Kuta and more. For surfing, recipes and Bali travel tips check out this little series I put together.

Bali is an island and province of Indonesia. The province includes the island of Bali and a few smaller neighbouring islands, notably Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan. It is located at the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, between Java to the west and Lombok to the east. Its capital, Denpasar, is located in the southern part of the island.
With a population of 3,890,757 in the 2010 census, and 4,225,000 as of January 2014, the island is home to most of Indonesia's Hindu minority. According to the 2010 Census, 83.5% of Bali's population adhered to Balinese Hinduism, followed by 13.4% Muslim, Christianity at 2.5%, and Buddhism 0.5%.
Bali is a popular tourist destination, which has seen a significant rise in tourists since the 1980s. It is renowned for its highly developed arts, including traditional and modern dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metalworking, and music. The Indonesian International Film Festival is held every year in Bali.
Bali is part of the Coral Triangle, the area with the highest biodiversity of marine species. In this area alone over 500 reef building coral species can be found. For comparison, this is about 7 times as many as in the entire Caribbean. Most recently, Bali was the host of the 2011 ASEAN Summit, 2013 APEC and Miss World 2013.
The tourism industry is primarily focused in the south, while significant in the other parts of the island as well. The main tourist locations are the town of Kuta (with its beach), and its outer suburbs of Legian and Seminyak (which were once independent townships), the east coast town of Sanur (once the only tourist hub), in the center of the island Ubud, to the south of the Ngurah Rai International Airport, Jimbaran, and the newer development of Nusa Dua and Pecatu.
The United States government lifted its travel warnings in 2008. The Australian government issued an advice on Friday, 4 May 2012. The overall level of the advice was lowered to 'Exercise a high degree of caution'. The Swedish government issued a new warning on Sunday, 10 June 2012 because of one more tourist who was killed by methanol poisoning.[38] Australia last issued an advice on Monday, 5 January 2015 due to new terrorist threats.[39]
Kuta Beach is a popular tourist spot in Bali
An offshoot of tourism is the growing real estate industry. Bali real estate has been rapidly developing in the main tourist areas of Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Oberoi. Most recently, high-end 5 star projects are under development on the Bukit peninsula, on the south side of the island. Million dollar villas are being developed along the cliff sides of south Bali, commanding panoramic ocean views. Foreign and domestic (many Jakarta individuals and companies are fairly active) investment into other areas of the island also continues to grow. Land prices, despite the worldwide economic crisis, have remained stable.
In the last half of 2008, Indonesia's currency had dropped approximately 30% against the US dollar, providing many overseas visitors value for their currencies. Visitor arrivals for 2009 were forecast to drop 8% (which would be higher than 2007 levels), due to the worldwide economic crisis which has also affected the global tourist industry, but not due to any travel warnings.
Bali's tourism economy survived the terrorist bombings of 2002 and 2005, and the tourism industry has in fact slowly recovered and surpassed its pre-terrorist bombing levels; the longterm trend has been a steady increase of visitor arrivals. In 2010, Bali received 2.57 million foreign tourists, which surpassed the target of 2.0–2.3 million tourists. The average occupancy of starred hotels achieved 65%, so the island is still able to accommodate tourists for some years without any addition of new rooms/hotels,[40] although at the peak season some of them are fully booked.
In August 2010, the film Eat Pray Love was released in theatres. The movie was based on Elizabeth Gilbert's best-selling memoir Eat, Pray, Love. It took place at Ubud and Padang-Padang Beach at Bali. The 2006 book, which spent 57 weeks at the No. 1 spot on the New York Times paperback nonfiction best-seller list, had already fuelled a boom in Eat, Pray, Love-related tourism in Ubud, the hill town and cultural and tourist center that was the focus of Gilbert's quest for balance through traditional spirituality and healing that leads to love.[43]
In January 2016, after music icon David Bowie died, it was revealed that in his will, Bowie asked for his ashes to be scattered in Bali, conforming to Buddhist rituals. He had visited and performed in a number of Southeast Asian cities early in his career, including Bangkok and Singapore.[44]

Consider the following eight things to do in Bali, Indonesia as part of the attractions you consider during your travels.
When it comes to islands worth visiting in Southeast Asia, few can compete with the allure of Bali; however, if you're expecting a Utopian pristine paradise, as often is depicted in the movies and popular culture, you'll be in for a rude awakening. Bali is what it is -- unicorns and warts alike. Although there is stunning scenery, world class beaches and enchanting Hindu temples to explore there is also eyesore rubbish piles, filthy beaches and unscrupulous touts to content with.

Welcome to Bali, Indonesia!
After spending nearly a year travelling in Southeast Asia, we couldn't leave without first visiting Bali. We decided to take a 2 week trip to the famed island and split our time between Ubud and Sanur to explore as much as possible.
During one of our first nights on the island, we attended a Balinese fire and trance performance. This dance and music drama originated in the 1930s, depicting stories from Hindu literature.
Ubud is the art and cultural capital of Bali and we enjoyed spending a few days here. Our mornings in the town were spent visiting the various temples, browsing through markets, and soaking in the surroundings.
We also had a chance to visit the Tegalalang Rice Terraces. They were lush, green, and reminded us of our time in Korea because Sam's apartment overlooked rice terraces.
Bali is mainly Hindu and the island is home to many temples. During our time in Bali we visited the Elephant Temple, which is best known for its menacing cave entrance.
We also visited Gunung Kawi, which is nicknamed the Rock Temple. The rock temple gets its name because of the 10 shrines that were carved into the rock wall and stand 7 meters tall. They are truly a sight to behold.
Well, I am supposed to sprinkle water on my head, so here we go.
During our tour around the island, we stopped at a lookout point where we saw the impressive Mount Batur looming in the horizon. Mount Batur is an active volcano, however, when we learned that it was open to hikers, we decided we were up for the challenge.
Bali is a great jump off point for exploring some of the surrounding beaches and islands. Trips to Lombok, Nusa Lembongan, and the Gili Islands are very easy to arrange. There are plenty of water sports to choose from including snorkeling, free diving, scuba diving, surfing and even kayaking.
Ubud is home to the monkey forest where infamous little macaques roam freely. The monkey forest is home to over 600 monkeys, who over time have lost all fear of man. The monkeys are not shy and will approach people and even climb onto their bodies if they believe you have food. If you're feeling adventurous and would like to feed the monkeys, you can purchase bananas right at the entrance of the monkey forest.
One of the highlights of our time in Bali, was climbing Mount Batur for sunrise. The morning of the hike, we got up at 2 in the morning and were driven to the base of the volcano.
Overall, we really enjoyed our time in Bali! It may not have been the quiet paradise that's depicted in the movies, but it offered culture, natural beauty, and it was a great place to relax.

Close to Seminyak is Petitenget Temple. Today, this centuries-old place of worship is alive with restaurants and fashion boutiques. Uluwatu is another of Bali's temple, this one perched dramatically atop a cliff.
In the west of Bali is Jimbaran, renowned for its seafood restaurants.
Bali is awash with exotic wildlife. Bali Bird Park is a sanctuary to over 1000 birds from Indonesia and beyond. Bali Zoo gives visitors the chance to ride on the back of an elephant. The Sacred Monkey Forest is another enchanting Bali wildlife hotspot.
Bali's cultural capital Ubud buzzes with culture; attractions include the Neka Art and Puri Lukisan museums, and the Arma Museum.

Transportation:
• Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific Air fly to Bali from Manila direct. If you’re lucky enough, you can score some affordable low airfare tickets when they are on sale. I got mine for Php3,000+ RT during a CebPac sale!
• In Bali, you can hire Bali Asia Tours to drive you around – trust me, he is a very good driver, guide, and photographer!

• Uluwatu Temple, Bali – careful with the monkeys! Wait for the sunset and watch the Kecak Fire Dance.

• Tanah Lot, Bali, Indonesia – nice view.
