Khumbu (also known as the Everest Region) is a region of northeastern Nepal on the Nepalese side of Mount Everest. It is part of the Solukhumbu District, which in turn is part of the Sagarmatha Zone. Khumbu is one of three subregions of the main Khambu (specially Thulung) and Sherpa settlement of the Himalaya, the other two being Solu and Pharak. It includes the town of Namche Bazaar as well as the villages of Thame, Khumjung, Pangboche, Pheriche and Kunde. The famous Buddhist monastery at Tengboche is also located in the Khumbu.
The Khumbu's elevation ranges from 3,300 metres (11,000 feet) to the 8,848 m (29,029 ft) summit of Mount Everest, the highest place on Earth. The Khumbu region includes both Sagarmatha National Park (above Monju) and the Sagarmatha National Park Buffer Zone, between Lukla and Monju.
The Khumbu is a glacier believed to be the result of the last great Ice Age, ~500,000 years ago.
Lonely Planet has ranked Khumbu region in sixth best region in the world to travel.
The Khumbu Icefall is an icefall located at the head of the Khumbu Glacier and the foot of the Western Cwm, which lies at an altitude of 5,486 metres (17,999 ft) on the Nepali slopes of Mount Everest, not far above Base Camp and southwest of the summit. The icefall is considered one of the most dangerous stages of the South Col route to Everest's summit. The Khumbu glacier that forms the icefall moves at such speed that large crevasses open with little warning, and the large towers of ice (called seracs) found at the icefall have been known to collapse suddenly. Huge blocks of ice tumble down the glacier from time to time, their size ranging from that of cars to large houses. It is estimated that the glacier advances 0.9 to 1.2 m (3 to 4 ft) down the mountain every day.
Most climbers try to cross the icefall during the very early morning, before sunrise, when it has partially frozen during the night and is less susceptible to movement. As the intense sunlight warms the area, the friction between the ice structure lessens and increases the chances of crevasses opening or blocks falling. The most dangerous time to cross the Khumbu Icefall is generally mid- to late-afternoon. Strong, acclimatized climbers can ascend the icefall in a few hours, while climbers going through it for the first time, or lacking acclimatization or experience, tend to make the journey in 10–12 hours. "Camp I" on Everest's South Col route is typically slightly beyond the top of the Khumbu Icefall.
Mount Everest, also known in Nepal as Sagarmāthā and in Tibet as Chomolungma, is Earth's highest mountain. It is located in the Mahalangur mountain range in Nepal and Tibet. Its peak is 8,848 metres (29,029 ft) above sea level. It is not the furthest summit from the centre of the Earth. That honour goes to Mount Chimborazo, in the Andes. The international border between China (Tibet Autonomous Region) and Nepal runs across Everest's precise summit point. Its massif includes neighbouring peaks Lhotse, 8,516 m (27,940 ft); Nuptse, 7,855 m (25,771 ft) and Changtse, 7,580 m (24,870 ft).
In 1856, the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India established the first published height of Everest, then known as Peak XV, at 8,840 m (29,002 ft). The current official height of 8,848 m (29,029 ft) as recognised by China and Nepal was established by a 1955 Indian survey and subsequently confirmed by a Chinese survey in 1975. In 1865, Everest was given its official English name by the Royal Geographical Society upon a recommendation by Andrew Waugh, the British Surveyor General of India. Waugh named the mountain after his predecessor in the post, Sir George Everest, arguing that there were many local names, against the opinion of Everest.

Our stunning escapade into the Mt Everest region going over the high Khumbu mountain passes of Renjo La, Cho la. We went through the remote Bhote Koshi valley following the contours of river Khoshi, sampling great hospitality along the Sherpa villages. Crossed our first 5000 mt high mountain pass at Renjo la with unparalleled views of the mighty Himalayan mountains including Mt Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu and the shimmering Gokyo Lakes. Getting to the other side of Cho la pass, a few days later was equally hard and brought us to the khmubu valley where Ama Dablam and Cholatse dominated most of the views. Climbing the Khumbu Ice Fall on Mount Everest
GoPro video of May 14th, 2016 traveling down the Khumbu ice fall on the south side of Mt. Everest featuring three horizontal ladders tied together over a crevasse.
This video shows a twin otter STOL plane landing and taking off at Lukla airstrip in the Khumbu region of Nepal. This is how many trekkers to Everest start their journeys. This video was taken before the airstrip was tarmacked and was just a dirt strip. It is called the Ski jump as there is a 10% incline. There is also footage taken from high on the Zatra-la pass of a plane coming into land. It shows the vast scale of the Himalayas. Here in the dark
I stand before you
Knowing this is my chance to show you my heart
This is the start
This is the start
I have so much to say and I'm hopin'
That your arms are open
Don't turn away, I want you near me
But you have to hear me
Here's where I stand
Here's who I am
Love me, but don't tell me who I have to be
Here's who I am, I'm what you see
You said I had to change and I was tryin'
But my heart was lyin'
I'm not that child any longer
I am stronger
Here's where I stand
Here's who I am
Help me to move on but please don't tell me how
I'm on my way, I'm movin' now
In this life we've come so far
But we're only who we are
With the courage of love
To show us the way
We've got the power to stand up and say
Here's where I stand
Here's where I am
Stand up and be counted, I'm counting on you
If you're with me
We'll make it through
Here's where I stand
Here's who I am
Love me, love me, love me and we'll make it through
Here's where I stand
Baby, baby, baby I'm counting on you
Here's where I stand
Love me, love me, love me and we'll make it through
I'm counting
I'm counting
