Soraya (musician)
Soraya (born Soraya Raquel Lamilla Cuevas; March 11, 1969 – May 10, 2006) was a Colombian-American singer/songwriter, guitarist, arranger and record producer.
A successful Colombian music star, she had two number-one songs on Billboard's Latin Pop Airplay charts. She won a 2004 Latin Grammy Award for the self-titled album "Soraya" as "Best Album by Songwriter", which she produced, and a 2005 Latin Grammy Awards nomination for "Female Pop Vocal Album" for her album El Otro Lado de Mí (literally "The Other Side of Me"). She was the opening act for the 2005 Billboard Latin Music Awards. Her career spanned ten years, and she recorded five albums. Soraya died on May 10, 2006 following a long struggle against breast cancer.
Biography
Early life
She was born Soraya Raquel Lamilla Cuevas in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, a year after her father, mother, and brother moved to the United States from their native Colombia. The family moved back to Colombia when she was a baby, but when Soraya was eight years old, they returned to New Jersey. "Soraya" is a very common name in the Middle East, and its meaning can be translated "rich" or "princess". Soraya's maternal relatives were Lebanese Christians who emigrated from Lebanon to Colombia. Soraya's mother, Yamila Cuevas Gharib, had been a housewife in Colombia. Soraya's father, Gregorio Lamilla, worked for an exporting company in Colombia; in the U.S., life was hard for the family, so to make ends meet, he worked three or four jobs.

Princeton University presents International Arabic belly dancer Soraya with some of her live musicians from Egypt. Enjoy a glimpse of authentic and earthy Egyptian raks balady with Mohammed on keys and Sameh on tabla. This event entitled: "A night in the desert" was artfully presented by the students and staff at wonderful and generous Princeton celebrating cultural diversity. This was a private event and not open to the public presented by Princeton U. Tableaux vivant. Soraya's costume is of black and chartreuse yellow with delicate netting on the belt. The pants, sans skirt, allow the viewer to see the intricate leg work, shimmies, body anchoring and different movements more clearly. Live Middle Eastern show taped at the "Circus Maximus Theater" showroom at Caesar's Atlantic City in front of approximately 3,000 people. Soraya is opening for beloved Iraqi singing star, poet and Middle Eastern composer Kazem al Saher. In this segment, Soraya displays Egyptian baladi progression inside of the Oriental stage element. Notice an artistic, melodic, experimental *tarab* moment taking place, occuring spontaneously with a "give and take" (creative flow) happening between Soraya and the musicians which is an important key point before the drum solo. Through her multifaceted dancing, Soraya enjoys engaging the discerning client, audience, listener and viewer to take them on a journey of the senses and of the soul. Soraya loves bringing a higher artistic level offering a more complex, rich and complete experience of Middle Eastern dance, music, culture and costuming.
This is a wonderful Middle Eastern band, enjoy the keyboard taqsim, violin, riq and special "el ras" Dabke drummer. It is as if the band and the dancer are having a "conversation". This segment finishes in a tabla solo with multiple Arabic percussionists.
Kazem el Saher is a famous Iraqi singer, composer and poet. His beautiful art is enjoyed the world over and he is considered: "The Prince of Arabic Poem. Al-Saher was invited to the Oscars because he participated in the Musical Score of the movie 'My Country My Country', which was nominated for an Oscar in the category of Documentary Feature Foreign Film. Soraya is an Internationally acclaimed Middle Eastern belly dancer, entertainment booking agent and cultural anthropologist based in Margate, NJ and is happily married to her wonderful husband Dr. Rob.

album : The Marion Brown Quartet This 1966 release was saxophonist Marion Brown's debut recording as a leader. There are three tracks here, two of which go on for some time. As was the case with most of ESP's releases from the period, this is a free jazz blowing date. There are two bassists on the program, Ronnie Boykins and Reggie Johnson, along with John Coltrane's future drummer Rashied Ali, and Brown playing with either trumpeter Alan Shorter or saxophonist Bennie Maupin. Music Under The Stars enjoyed a spectacular display of Oleksiy Kovalenko's pianistic and musical mastery. He treated us to colorful interpretations of Scarlatti and Haydn sonatas, through to sheer virtuosic delight with Liszt-Busoni's, 'La Campanella'. Rachmaninov was a main feature, with Etude-Tableaux, Op. 33 where different musical evocations and nuances, took us deep into rich Russian culture. The finale with the third movement of Prokofiev's 7th Sonata rounded off the evening with a flourish, that reminded what a privilege it is to experience individual artistry combined with classical music at its finest.

This video displays Raqs Sharqi (theatrical Oriental stage dance), Al-Jeel (modern pop), Egyptian Folkloric dancing, Raqs al- Assaya Saidi (cane) dancing, Raqs Balady, Fellahin, Egyptian Gypsy Ghawazi a/k/a Ghawazee dancing and Tabla (drum) solo and more.
The video video was professionally filmed with multiple cameras at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey (my Alma Mater) in the PAC (performing arts center) theater stage in front of a live audience.

This 1966 release was saxophonist Marion Brown's debut recording as a leader. There are three tracks here, two of which go on for some time. As was the case with most of ESP's releases from the period, this is a free jazz blowing date. There are two bassists on the program, Ronnie Boykins and Reggie Johnson, along with John Coltrane's future drummer Rashied Ali, and Brown playing with either trumpeter Alan Shorter or saxophonist Bennie Maupin. While the music here feels, and for the most part is entirely improvised for maximum visceral effect, Brown already has his tone and style and is a clear standout. His unique phrasing and attack shows his tenderness, even in the angriest of these exchanges. He holds his own with the rhythm section and is at times lyrical and spacious, particularly in the middle sections of "Capricorn Moon" and "27 Cooper Square." While this is not his best recording, it is memorable as an early showcase for Brown's fully developed voice, and for Boykins' and Ali's fiery playing.
